  • newegg High Performance in low noise Combining high speed cache and large capacity, the WD Caviar Blue internal hard drives provides solid performance to meet the most demanding environments and applications. Cool operation results in the highest reliability, even in intensely hot environments such as digital video recorders. The technology that Tom's Hardware Guide called "very fast and nearly silent" is used throughout this family of drives. WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to levels near the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms, resulting in more efficient operation.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA - Do not buy.

Pros: None

Cons: Non-working drive.

Other Thoughts: Got this for a project/learning box with my kid. Assembled components over a two month time period, then started the build. Drive is DOA, but because outside the 30 day return, no refund or exchange.
Been a loyal Newegg'er (?) for many years, spending thousands on my own builds and for others. This is the first bad experience.

Lessons learned? Never WD again. No more refurbished drives. Test everything as soon as it arrives.

1 out of 5 eggsD.O.A.

Pros: D.O.A. Not anything positive to say about that.

Cons: Purchased for a new build and started having trouble as soon as I tried installing a Linux operating system. Tried several different Linux distros, but kept running into the same problem: read/write sectors bad; partition failures; unable to identify partition file systems immediately after formatting. Could not install any system. Finally put into working computer to verify drive failure and immediately started having the same trouble with the hard drive in my working computer. Thought I had picked up malware from this drive and wrecked my good machine: jibberish on boot when showing hard drives; inability to reformat or partition drive, inability to read/write to drive. Great. Then, after several hours, my good machine suddenly took a repartition and a reinstall. ??? I don't know. ??? But the new hard drive still is dead and does not even show up in G-parted. Hardly refurbished, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsRefurbished Hard Drive

Pros: Passed HDtune tests. Crystal disk info shows new drive 0 hours 3 power on. Quite happy with this drive. 95Mbs so its an older drive

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: refurbished drives are a gamble. So you may have to send one back but for the most part 90% are fine

5 out of 5 eggsGood Purchase

Pros: I bought 2 of these in '10, and they are both running strong. This was a bang for the buck deal for refurbished hard drives back then.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsNever Purchase Re-certified from WD

Pros: Quiet drive

Cons: Extremely poor reliability. I believe the WD re certification process only includes placing the drive back in a box, and return to vendor to be re-sold. Years ago, I received three defective re-certified WD drives in a row. They failed immediately. Years later I thought I'd give them another chance, this drive is starting to fail after 8mos. Lesson learned.

1 out of 5 eggsEh.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Drive lasted all of about an hour before it had a S.M.A.R.T. status failure, I never even finished installing software on it.

Other Thoughts: It cost half of what I paid for the drive to ship it back effectively increasing the drive cost by 50%. Keep in mind what it may cost you to return a defective unit and add that to the purchase price. It may still be a great deal, for me I'm not so sure.

4 out of 5 eggsReally low cost drive

Pros: What a low price! I needed a hard drive to revive an old desktop that was just about dead. The proprietary parts in the old desktop lead me to just give up and use some old parts plus this drive, a new cpu and motherboard and cheap case to do a really low cost (<$140) backup computer running Ubuntu linux. The drive runs fine (some reported bad sectors, nothing to complain about). And did I mention the low cost?

Cons: Really, I got a bare drive that has been refurbished and runs fine. I did not bother to find out about the bad sectors since the Ubuntu system runs just great. I am very happy with all the little bit of money I spent on this.

Other Thoughts: A 250mb drive in today's market is not big, but for a backup that I dont plan to put important data on, this is great.
