5 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital Scorpio Black WDBABD3200ANC-NRSN

Pros: In comparison to the Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s model: There don't seem to be any at all, except that it probably comes with a data cable and 4 mounting screws. But, the photos don't show these ...

Cons: In comparison to the Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s model:

Unknown spindle speed, fifteen bucks more expensive and has only a 3 year warranty compared to 5 years for the 7200 rpm Black bare/OEM model.

Other Thoughts: Why is the spindle speed not known/shown ?

4 out of 5 eggsGood little drive

Pros: Low power
Very quiet
Good performance

Cons: Nothing to complain about

Other Thoughts: I purchased 4 of these drives back in February (2012) for a desktop I was building to serve as my all-in-one virtualization lab. All four drives arrived in perfect condition and installed without any problems. I've now been running all four drives non-stop for about the last 4 months without issue.

When it comes to sharing IOs between virtualized systems, disk IOs can be a performance bottleneck. I purchased this model of hard drive as a compromise between cost, noise level, and performance. I'm quite satisfied with the results.

Why didn't I give the Scorpio Black 5 stars? In my mind, 5 star reviews are reserved for products that wow me. The Scorpio Black 2.5" drives perform admirably, but I haven't been wowed by them or experienced anything I wasn't expecting.

5 out of 5 eggsNot what I expected.

Pros: Wow fast. Scored 5.9 on Windows Indexing. Replaced a tachi hard drive in my laptop with this. Average read on HDtach is 97.6mb/s for me. A nice upgrade from 42.3mb/s from the stock drive (SATA I). Also whisper quiet!

Cons: *Read other thoughts first*

I actually the Caviar Blue. I wanted a 5400 rpm drive to save on the battery and to keep the temperatures down. However this 7200 rpm Black only shortens battery life by about 7 minutes and the temps are about the same as my 4 year old 5400rpm stock drive.

Didn't get it from the egg

Other Thoughts: I actually bought a 320gb Caviar Blue at a local best/buy for the same $49 the egg wanted. I opened the box after getting home with it and to my surprise it was a Caviar Black! Western Digital added a note in the box that says "Free Hard Drive Upgrade". So I cant really complain. The date on the note is May of 2010 so I'm guessing this free upgrade is long gone.
