5 out of 5 eggsWorkhorse! Totally reliable

Pros: Have had this thing in a home theatre library working 24/7 for over a year. No issues. Excellent drive for the price. Plenty of space and speed for 1080p movies and TV. Formats to 1.81TB in Windows. Not bad at all.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: 4TB is now available but 2TB is where the sweet price point is currently.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat so far

Pros: Quite, Low power, and no major issues.

Cons: One drive had 3 bad sectors within a month but nothing since.

Other Thoughts: First off, I ordered 25 of these hard drives because I couldn't get a hold of 25 of the 2Tb Reds due to supply shortage. I wasn't super happy about it but I needed the space ASAP. The biggest issue I was worried about was the number of DOAs people were getting but I got all working drives.

So far I have been really please with them and was thankful I got these after WD put out a notice on the Reds I was going to buy.

As of right now only 1 drive has had any bad sectors (3 sectors) and they showed up after a month. After getting the drive to map those as bad I haven't had any issues.

1 minor problem out of 25 drives is a good for me. 5 months so far. Will update if I run into problems.

Other Thoughts: None that concern these drives.

5 out of 5 eggsSWEET upgrade to our DVR!

Pros: - Price vs Storage Capacity: this is a great drive for the price.

Cons: - None so far... ; - )

Other Thoughts: I bought this to upgrade the storage of our DVR. Although not an "officially" support upgrade... I found a very detailed guide on how to upgrade the storage in your home DVR that rhymes with "shmeevo". If you can clone a pc hard drive, you can upgrade the storage of YOUR DVR!!!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for Series 3 Tivo!

Pros: It took longer to connect this drive to my computer than to apply a Tivo backup image and supersize it via WinMFS.

With a 1 Gig swap file I got just sky of 300 HD hours of recording space on my OLED S3 (648) Tivo.

This was an inexpensive option to add life to my liftime service Tivo S3.

free 2-day shipping with Shoprunner.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: buying this drive is a no-brainer. If I can't get a deal ont he Red series I may use a few of these for a Raid 10 array in my media workstation.

1 out of 5 eggsProne to quick failure

Pros: Affordable, that's it.

Cons: Failure rate must be extraordinarily high.

Other Thoughts: Bought two drives for mirror RAID setup on linux server. First drive failed after just over one year, and I thought "well, good thing I bought two and have the second one for backup". Unfortunately, I procrastinated a bit too long because the second one failed a few months later and I lost 1.8 TB of data. Would NOT recommend these. If it helps other purchasers, I also bought a 2 TB Samsung drive at the same time and it's still up and running fine.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Rich, it is unfortunate that you experienced multiple faulty drives. Please note that there are many variables that can result in a failed drive, such as power outages, accidental physical damage, internal component failure, and computer viruses, just to name a few. As a troubleshooting step we recommend download and run our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows (WinDLG) utility for Windows users, or running Disk Utility for Mac users. Information regarding our WinDLG utility and Disk utility can be found at the following link. The desktop Green power drives may be used for RAID 0 and RAID 1 however we would recommend using a RE class drive such as our WD RE4-GP for reliable RAID usage because they have TLER.

5 out of 5 eggsThese Work Great in My Tivo S3's

Pros: Plenty of storage space (288 hours of HD; 1300+ hours of standard def)... have not heard a whisper from it.

Cons: Would prefer to pay under $50 each for these. :)

Other Thoughts: I used WinMFS to clone the stock 320GB drive from my Tivo S3 THX (11.0k.* firmware), then expand the resulting apple partition table to use the rest of the space on this drive... It now has room for 288 hours of High Definition recordings, and I'm not worried about the 5400 rpm spec because the Tivo can't fully utilize the speed it has now, let alone 33% more speed from 7200 rpm.

It went so smoothly I bought another one to do my other S3, which had already been upgraded to 1TB. The wdidle3 fix is not needed for any of these drives built since the beginning of 2013, by the way.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed within an hour.

Pros: Big.

Cons: Got this in the mail. Installed without a hitch into my gaming machine that I built. I took it offline for about a month or so, until my existing hard drive filled up. When I put this thing back online it made a funny buzzing clicking noise, as if it is seeking but not finding. My comp cannot find it or recognize it. Bad thing is, it's past the RMA period, so I am out a hundred bucks or whatever. Not sure I will trust this brand or model for backups anymore.
