  • newegg Dual Actuator Technology The WD Caviar Black (2 TB and 1.5 TB models only) features a head positioning system with two actuators to improve positional accuracy over the data track(s). The primary actuator provides coarse displacement using conventional electromagnetic actuator principles. The secondary actuator uses a piezoelectric motor to fine tune the head positioning to a higher degree of accuracy.
  • newegg StableTrac The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations. (2 TB and 1.5 TB models only)
  • newegg NoTouch Ramp Load Technology The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media, as well as better drive protection in transit.
  • newegg High Performance Electronics Architecture The electronics architecture of WD Caviar Black employs dual processor - twice the processing power, and up to 64 MB colossal cache to maximize performance.
  • newegg IntelliSeek Technology WD’s IntelliSeek technology proactively calculates an optimum seek speed to eliminate hasty movement of the actuator, resulting in lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
  • newegg SATA 6 Gb/s Interface SATA 6 Gb/s (SATA Revision 3.0) provides twice the bus bandwidth of SATA 3Gb/s (SATA II) along with enhancements including a new Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and improved power management capabilities. SATA 6 Gb/s uses the same connector as SATA 3 Gb/s and is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 and Mac OS X.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Fast. Works. Resurrected it somehow. Removed it from the enclosure and plugged it directly into my Mac Pro. Might have been the enclosure it was in. Works fine now. Disregard previous review.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest Newegg allow posters to edit their posts...

1 out of 5 eggsDied at 1.5 years

Pros: Fast; other one I bought works fine.

Cons: Bought two in November 2013. One just died, May, 2015. Light use (backup).

Other Thoughts: I know all HHDs/manufacturers have a certain number of failures. Had a Seagate die young 10 years ago. So this does not condemn WD. But it does rankle, especially when it is a medium capacity, supposedly higher-level HD like this.

4 out of 5 eggsVery solid drive

Pros: Worked great, no problems installing or using drive. Quite fast with great response times and data speeds. Never had any issues with heat or noise. (But then again my computer was somewhat noisy to begin with so this drive might've gotten lost in the background noise)

Cons: Died after 2 years of faithful service. (computer was almost never off) WD promptly RMA'ed me a replacement.

Other Thoughts: I suspect the drive never spins down which I'm sure increases power consumption and wear and tear on the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable, fast, 5year warranty

Pros: I have had several disk arrays with those, 60+ drives, since 2010. Had 2 drives fail in the first 1year ( controller would not recognize them, WD replaced them promptly).

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsAnd its dying

Pros: Capacity

Cons: Anytime I wanted to access the drive I had to wait for it to "wake up."

The data on the drive has become corrupted without warning after about a year and a half of usage.

Other Thoughts: This drive has been overall pretty disappointing.

1 out of 5 eggsDead

Pros: It worked for a while.

Cons: It died, caused a crcdisk.sys error twice after re-installing windows. I went back to a 5 year old HD that worked perfectly on my system. Ridiculous.

2 out of 5 eggsDied so soon

Pros: It's fast.

Cons: Died without notice.

Other Thoughts: It's very disappointing that my hard drive just died without any kind of error message. My files are gone now :(

5 out of 5 eggsCan't beat a WD Black

Pros: Fast, reliable, no-nonsense, hard disk drive for those who need fast performance that they can count on. You can't go wrong with a Western Digital Black drive.

Cons: None that I can think of. Except for drives used in NAS configurations, or perhaps special requests from some folks for whom I'll build a system, this is pretty much the only drive I use in addition to the obligatory SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat reliable drive.

Pros: I've had this drive for over 3 years now.

Fast for a spindle drive, have been able to clock this thing at 120-130 MB/s throughput on reads and a tad slower on writes. Never tried the random read/writes though. Don't usually see it drop lower than 90ish MB/s with transfers of lots of pictures (5-10 MB each, usually in 5-16 GB sets). This is still consistent after 3 years of use.

Doesn't care if it's more than half full (I can poke fun at many SSD's right? (-: )

It is tough! I've really put this drive through the ringer. I didn't have it in a case for about a year and transported it around with my laptop with an external connector (didn't even have it inside an enclosure). Even dropped it while it was running a few times (scared the ever living bajezes out of me) and it's still chugging. I don't recommend doing this, I was just low on funds at the time.

Cons: I haven't had any bad experiences with this drive in any way.

Other Thoughts: I did have a few bad sectors (had some CRC errors) on the occasional file for about 6 months after I finally stuffed it into my tower. For the number of times that I dropped it while it was running that seems par for the course really. They were all recoverable though, so no data loss. All in all a very tough and reliable drive, if you put it in a tower I doubt that you'd have problems with this drive ever. I haven't had a CRC error in over a year now.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Size, Great Drive

Pros: It's 2TB and reliable.

It's the data drive for my system -- I use an SSD to run the OS. While it's obviously slower than an SSD, it's not noticeably slow when it's purpose is archiving and retrieving data. It functions with no problems and for a while I even used it as a "flash drive" by plugging into a drive dock to copy and move large amounts of data at once. It's been moved around and used quite a bit with no degradation in performance. It now has a permanent home in one of my PCs and still doing a great job. This is a very good drive.

Cons: None.
