1 out of 5 eggsNot happy

Pros: They packaged it nice.

Cons: Placed the drive in the computer, started it up..bios setting were fine. Drive was recognized... windows 7 was loaded.. system rebooted. Home page came up... everything froze...rebooted and drive wasn't recognized. tried everything including setting the drive in 2 comparable computers. It spins but nothing. Going to RMA this. Only the second thing ive ever bought from newegg that was bad(however this was not from newegg; this was from an associated company with a lot of people complaining)

2 out of 5 eggsDrive failing after 2 years

Pros: When working the drive was quiet and fast. I installed two of these in my first build back in June 2012. The drive is about 2/3 full with mostly pictures and video files. About a month ago my security software started hanging on certain jpeg files on this drive. I tried viewing the files in Adobe Bridge and it crashed. I have deleted the offending files and the problem went away for a week or two then came back. I then wiped the free space on the drive. That too solved the problem temporarily. I downloaded WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. The drive failed the quick test with the following message:

Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: WDC WD1502FAEX-007BA0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WMAY03844529
Firmware Number: 05.01D05
Capacity: 1500.30 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 5 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 5!
Test Time: 23:06:15, July 09, 2014

I am in the process of running the extended test - but that will take 3-4 hours to complete. On WD's support forum people who ran into the above error were told their drive is failing and it should be replaced. This is the first HD failure I have had in many years.

Cons: Drive failed after 2 years even though it was their premium quality drive that came with a 5 year warranty. I am hoping I can get an RMA for the drive. I paid extra for the Black drives over the Blue or Green models.

5 out of 5 eggsFlawless WD Black

Pros: Replaced my aging WD Raptor 74GB boot drive, which is still working as a back-up drive for my movies. 1.5TB main with 500GB secondary storage, both black series.

Cons: none on 1.5TB

Other Thoughts: System started running sluggish and especially when accessing 500GB secondary drive. Acronis and WD Utilities shows bad drive, would not finish tests ended in premature failure. Followed WD RMA process and choose non-prepaid return (since this was a backup drive). I was able to save 95% of data on my main drive prior to sending it back. No fuss.

These drives are 3+ years old. I cannot complain one bit, system is on 24/7/365.

1 out of 5 eggsFAIL!

Pros: Good cost/capacity (when purchased - 1 in 2010 and 2 in 2011), 5 year warranty. The one that still works is fine. Fast and quiet. 1.0 TB
blacks in another machines also working fine.

Cons: Of three 1.5 TB Black drives purchased 2 have failed. Both at around 2 years.

Other Thoughts: Seems Newegg no longer stocks the 1.5s. I wonder if it's due to failure rate. They do still carry other size blacks.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Critical Bill, it is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Hard Drives. Please note that there are many variables that can result in a failed drive, such as power outages, accidental physical damage, and internal component failure, just to name a few. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties. 1 out of 5 eggsgot burned

Pros: n/a

Cons: dead straight out of the box

Other Thoughts: I bought this hard drive last year as part of a PC build but then some life happened and I had to put the whole thing aside for a number of months. Upon finally getting the opporunity to build the systems I realized that this HDD was dead straight out of tghe box. It powers and spins up but the PC will not recognize it. Took it to a PC shop for some pro help and they confirmed the diagnosis. dead unit. I am sure that a working Caviar Black is a quality unit but they need some QC. I would have sent it back had I not been well out of the return period by the time I knew it was bad.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

Pros: -Fast
-Quiet
-RELIABLE
-Spacey!
-Black Edition (flat out the highest quality WD - worth paying for)

Cons: -None

Other Thoughts: I've owned this over a year and never had so much as a hiccup. It is primarily my storage as my main drive is small. WD has an awesome name for themselves as quality and I've personally owned WD drives since 2004.. I've not had a single drive fail on me.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive So Far

Pros: * Works

Cons: * None

Other Thoughts: * I've built and owned probably a hundred drives plus in my life. I'm a fan of WD.
* I'm a firm believer that they warranty a drive for the amount of years they built the drive to last. 5yr warranty drives will last longer than 1yr warranty drives. Black and enterprise with WD.
* Friend using this drive. Heard no complaints.

1 out of 5 eggsFollow up review

Pros: Storage capacity

Cons: Loud, grinding/crunching noises (Since started using the drive).

Failed at the one year mark.

Other Thoughts: This is my 4th WD hard drive to fail within 2 years of purchase date. Will try my luck with Seagate while waiting for SSD prices to drop further.
