5 out of 5 eggsGreat Customer Service

Pros: I bought two of these HDD's in July 2011. Until now they were flawless. A few days ago, the "C" drive started going into check disk during boot. It would never finish and finally just stopped. I called WD customer service and after explaining the circumstances, they are sending me a replacement. This was no hassle at all and prompt service. I am so glad I bought a WD product with a five-year warranty. Thanks WD, you are the best.

5 out of 5 eggsLong lasting, pretty good

Pros: Long lasting, no bad sectors reported
Pretty quick read and write
Good spin-up time

Cons: A little noisy

Other Thoughts: I've owned this hard drive for about 4 years now, it's a seasoned veteran and still performing like a champ. Now holds all of my files while an SSD handles applications and OS. When it needs to be accessed, it takes approximately 2 seconds to wake up from sleeping.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and quiet drive

Pros: Fast and quiet. Good price/performance. Great reliability.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I got this for a desktop workstation and have been very pleased with it. I got the 750GB version to save a little money vs. the 1TB drive, also hoping it might be a little quieter. I have been very pleased with the performance of this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drives

Pros: I originally bought 2 of these to work in a RAID 0 array. However I had some MB problems and had to flash the BIOS which broke the RAID controller. I have since purchased an SSD drive for its raw speed and am using these as a Data drive and a back up drive. I have purchased quiet a few western Digital drives, usually for new builds, and have never had any problems out of any of them. Very reliable drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat gaming drive.

Pros: *Great speed, plenty of space
*Western Digital, it's still kicking (and I expect it to continue for many years)

Cons: *Not the size I wanted

Other Thoughts: When I bought this a year and a half ago, the hard drive crisis was ongoing, and the prices skyrocketed. I paid over 200 dollars for this thing, and that seems pretty ridiculous in retrospect, heh. It replaced a Samsung Spinpoint 1TB that was DOA (my own fault for not going with WD again). It was not the size I wanted, but the TB drive was 300 dollars. Thankfully, this one found use later on as a drive to put games, and I bought a TB drive later on for files.

4 out of 5 eggsStill running. Stable.

Pros: 750 Gigabytes 7200rpm 64mb cache. I have not had any issues.

Cons: For the specs I feel they should be faster.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 to put in a RAID 0. While they hold data and run great they seem to lack the performance expected. They do run stable amnd I have not had an issue with them yet. This was part of a 2011 build.

3 out of 5 eggsSO SLOW

Pros: 750GB pretty much it and it hasn't failed

Cons: SOOOOOO SLOWWWW, I kinda went over budget on my gaming rig and bought this because the price was reasonable and the size was good, should have save up and got a better drive because this one's transfer rates are terrible and its extremely noisy(not its going to fail noisy because so far its been reliable but im a slow drive copying a big file noisy)

Other Thoughts: So far its been reliable, no failing. so its not a bad drive if all your going to do is surf the internet and write word docs maybe listen to music but anything more then that and you'll want to get a faster drive. i knocked off 2 eggs because of noise and speed.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Black Desktop, as this is not the typical experience with the product. WD Black Desktop drives are well suited for gaming and photo editing; however the ultimately fast hard drive would be our VelociRaptor drives. You can read more here.

1 out of 5 eggsmore junk hard drives

Pros: fast when working

Cons: blew up with under 500 hours of service, and this was a pre-flood drive...

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Black Desktop, as this is not the typical experience with the product. If you experience a sudden failure of a hard drive, the best troubleshooting utility would be to run our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows. We have placed a link to this utility download with instructions for how to test a drive for problems. http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/list/search/1/kw/940

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Worked OK for 5 months

Cons: Dead in 30 seconds

Other Thoughts: Installed this drive in a new build 12/2011. Ran OK until 6/23/2012, when it stopped booting. No warning, didn't even "click". Western Diagnostics indicated "unknown error". Tried EVERYTHING, to no avail. Could not access it to repartition, reformat, or read for that matter. Finally replaced it with a Seagate. Fortunately had a recent image to rebuild the computer. 6 months lifespan is not acceptable. Now trying to RMA with Western. Wish me luck.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Black Desktop, as this is not the typical experience with the product. There could be several causes for a drive to suddenly fail, such as power concerns or component malfunction. It would be strongly suggested to test a drive again with a known good SATA cable and disconnecting any non-essential power connections; such as the CD-ROM/DVD or other hard drives to ensure the hard drive is getting all the power available from the power supply. Should you require any further assistance from us directly, you may contact us at 1 (800) 275-4932, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/rs/.
