5 out of 5 eggsFail but still Happy

Pros: Good solid WD Black quality. Easy RMS process. This device was replaced with another WD black. Only out of pocket was <$7 shipping to WD.

Cons: Yes, this drive started to fail after 3+ years and it was noticed before complete failure. I was able to transfer nearly all my data over to another drive prior to RMA this drive to WD. The data I didn't transfer was by choice not because it was lost. Acronis and WD Data Lifeguard are good tools, they stay on my system and I check my drives regularly.

Other Thoughts: System started running sluggish and especially when accessing 500GB secondary drive. Acronis and WD Utilities shows bad drive, would not finish tests ended in premature failure. Followed WD RMA process and choose non-prepaid return (since this was a backup drive). I was able to save 95% of data on my main drive prior to sending it back. No fuss. These drives are 3+ years old. I cannot conplain one bit. System is on 24/7/365

3 out of 5 eggsStarting to fail.

Pros: Quick, quiet, and never had any trouble out of it.. until now. (see below)

Cons: I've had this very hard drive since March of 2011, and just the day before yesterday my PC started throwing me BSODs one after another. After some debugging and testing, it's the hard drive. The diagnostic program straight off of Western Digital's website failed on both a quick and extended test, within seconds of starting them.

The drive will boot to safe mode (it's the main drive, unfortunately) and seemingly stay there just fine, but seconds after booting normally and logging on to a user profile (which takes substantially longer than normal), I get another BSOD.

I see this drive is now discontinued despite being under the 5 year warranty. Hopefully I'll be able to return it or something. This is the second or third drive from WD I've had fail well within the warranty period.

Other Thoughts: The drive was never heavily used despite being the main drive for this PC. Other than normal day-to-day operations, there was never a time when the drive was really stressed (ie: large amounts of data being put on to or taken off of it in short periods of time, etc.)

5 out of 5 eggsgg WD

Pros: Had this for about 2 years now, hopefully it'll take me through college. No problems, reads and writes quick enough that I don't feel too inclined to get an SSD.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsDon't get excited!

Pros: The Hard drive worked well for about 2 years.

Cons: This hard drive FAILED after 2 years of ownership. It was in my one and only desktop pc that my wife and I use daily. I wouldn't recommend this particular hard drive to anyone looking for a reliable pc.

Other Thoughts: Will be trying the 1TB Western Digital Blue series instead of this one. Also, the failure cause a huge headache on my part because as soon as I heard the "ticking," I went out and bought an external hard drive to save a system image onto (windows 7) and some dvd for a recovery disc. This failure ended up costing me $$!!

5 out of 5 eggsRe Review

Pros: I got a bad one and gave it one egg. But WD made it up quick and no trouble about it. WD made it up with a new drive. so I giving them 5 eggs. for service.

Cons: as many drives as WD makes there is bond to be a bad egg sometime.

Other Thoughts: Just trouble with the first drive, it would stop my computer from loading and it was not my boot drive.
