  • newegg Massive Capacity, High Performance With a combination of 64 MB cache, dual processors and dual stage actuation (2 TB only), WD RE4 drives deliver up to 2 TB's of cavernous capacity and lightning-fast performance in demanding server and storage applications.
  • newegg Thermal Extended Burn-in Test Each WD RE4 drive is put through extended burn-in testing with thermal cycling to ensure reliable operation.
  • newegg High Reliability Features Enhanced RAFF technology includes sophisticated electronics to monitor the drive and correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time, resulting in a significant performance improvement in high vibration environments. Multi-axis shock sensor automatically detects the subtlest shock events and compensates to protect the data. RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER) prevents drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives.
  • newegg StableTrac The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations.
  • newegg NoTouch Ramp Load Technology The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media, as well as better drive protection in transit.
  • newegg IntelliSeek Technology WD’s IntelliSeek technology proactively calculates an optimum seek speed to eliminate hasty movement of the actuator, resulting in lower power consumption, noise and vibration.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic drives

Pros: Extremely reliable
Great for JBOD or RAID
Fast

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased 3 of these for games and project files (Massive sets of EXRs, etc), and I've yet to fill that space.
I have them in software raid 0, and they've accumulated 4,184 power on hours, I've had no problems with them what so ever; each averages 100MB/s transfer rates in my set of 3.

I go out of my way to recommend these to people looking at higher end hard drives.

I have also purchased a later model (The 6.0Gb/s version), but it's louder and has had some problems, so I would recommend this version instead.

3 out of 5 eggs2 drive failures in 4 years

Pros: Im happy with the RAID operation and general speed, good for the price, not great, just good.

Cons: Built my machine in July 2010 and in Jan 2014 one drive failed and July the other failed. 4 yrs is long but I expected more, I have velociraptors running 6 years now.

3 out of 5 eggsWhat happened, WD?

Pros: Capacity, speed, cache, RAID-compatibility

Cons: Failure rate is abysmal. I'm batting 0 for 3 right now.

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these for a web server build, and one exhibited problems right off the bat. Rather than waste time with an RMA, I decided to simply purchase and overnight ship another -- which also is exhibiting problems now.

Today, my SMART status went from "A few bad sectors" to "FAILURE IS IMMINENT" on one drive, and the other drive has over 1,200 bad sectors (and counting). The third drive shows no bad sectors, but will fail and disappear from the system after copying about 30GB to it.

The RE3 line was incredibly reliable -- I have had nothing but trouble with the RE4 line, with regard to the 1TB capacity drives.

Time to switch back to some lower-capacity Velociraptors until I can wait for 3 RMAs to go through -- and even then, can they be trusted? The reports of receiving recertified drives instead of brand-new drives via warranty is scaring me. I paid for brand-new drives, which I have received absolutely 0 usable life out of, and I'd like to receive some fully-functional, brand-new, working drives. I certainly hope that happens in the RMA process.

Not happy and definitely surprised.

1 out of 5 eggs67% failure rate

Pros: Nothing about the hardware, but the warranty service is fairly quick.

Cons: horrible reliability

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 drives for a raid system, 2 out 3 failed right out of box, wasted me several hours trying to make it work on my server. This is what Western Digital called "enterprise" class drive, what a joke. Meanwhile, I ordered 8 Seagate drives for my NAS server, none of them failed!

Filed warranty claim online, and received replacement drives pretty fast, however they are re-certified drives, it's rediculous that my brand new drives somehow became re-certified, I didn't even use it! Tonight I started building the raid array again, installed OS. Half hour later, one of the drive is reporting media read error already, it looks like it's on it's way to die. What a disappointment! I thought the extra price I paid for their RE drives should give me peace of mind, of drive me crazy like this! I will stay away from RE drives.

1 out of 5 eggsCrapped out in about 20 days

Pros: It worked well for the short amount of time it worked

Cons: Died within two weeks.

Other Thoughts: It was ordered back in November before Christmas, by the time it was installed and subsequently died the RMA period was up.

2 out of 5 eggsNot particularly reliable

Pros: Large capacity

Cons: I initially ordered 4 of these for our PERC 5/i controller on our server. Right out of the box, one of them continually got kicked out of the array. I tested the drive separately and it failed as a normal stand-alone drive as well. I attempted to return it, but I made the mistake of writing the word 'bad' on the lable (so I wouldn't confuse it with the others) - they refused to compensate me at all.

That was 6 months ago. Now another drive is failing. It rebuilt successfully, but is now failing and removing itself from the array on a daily basis. Irritating to say the least.

Other Thoughts: Thought I could trust Western Digital quality...

Thought I could trust NewEgg customer service...

1 out of 5 eggs50% failure rate

Pros: The one that works seems marginally faster than other 1TB 64MB cache SATA drives I've used.

Cons: 1 of the 2 I purchased failed after 1 hour of use. I didn't even get to complete my OS installer before it failed. "Enterprise"...

Manufacturer Response:

Western Digital does rigorously test and verify all of our drives, prior to shipping, with burn-in and diagnostic tests. 2 out of 5 eggsIf this drive fails, they send you a Recertified replacement

Pros: most of these are reliable.

Cons: We've been using the RE drives in our Servers for 5 or 6 years now. From time to time, one of them will fail while still under warranty. In the past, Western Digital always replaced the RE hard drives that failed within the warranty period, with a brand new one. (Or, if nothing else, the replacements were labeled as if they were brand new.) But today, 1-9-2014, for the first time ever, Western DIgital sent us a "Recertified" drive as the warranty replacement for an RE4 1TB drive that had failed after less than 3 months of use. Since we are not allowed to install "recertified" hard drives in our company servers, I had to bring this to the attention of my manager. It has caused all kinds of drama, for good reason. It appears that some poor peon at Western Digital is getting chewed out on the phone, as if this stupidity were his fault. Personally I find it a very depressing yet totally typical trend. Who would install a "recertified" hard drive in their Server? Why would Western Digital think this is appropriate? Wait, I can answer that - it's because their only competition now is Seagate, who is even worse. Cheap and large solid state drives can't come soon enough. Ugh.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE! No warranty from Western Digital.

Pros: Great perfoming drive for NAS; however, when trying to register at wdc.com, it says warranty expired.
Newegg lists 5years warranty - WDC says no warranty.

Cons: No warranty from WDC.
