5 out of 5 eggsLOVE IT

Pros: Fast, Quiet, Large capacity

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: i read a few of the 1 star reviews and they were just raging on this drive saying it died after a year and they weren't going to get another. I haven't had any problems with this drive and if i did id send i right back to newegg and have it replaced. I wouldn't return it because its my favorite drive and it is worth the little extra. its a step up from other 2tb drives.

4 out of 5 eggssolid

Pros: fast speeds for a spinning drive

Cons: -expensive... i dont understand the price fluctuations in HDDs. one day they are $50/TB, 2 days later they are $90/TB.
-noisy
i used a water-cooled system that requires very low fan speeds: <600 rpms, and this hard drive is literally the loudest part of my computer. incase you're wondering... no, i'm not exaggerating. click-click-click click click-click click-click click-click-click... click-click....... click

Other Thoughts: click... click-click-click-click.... click.... click-click.... click-click-click

get used to hearing that

4 out of 5 eggsWD Caviar Black

Pros: Lots of space, decent speed.

Cons: A bit noisy.

Other Thoughts: Good, solid, reliable drive for storage. Obviously not going to compete with SSD drives any time soon.

5 out of 5 eggsFive year warranty

Pros: Five year warranty, should be very durable if it's like my other WD Caviar Black drives, reasonably quiet.

I bought this drive for my my video work, which consumes ever more storage space. I have it mounted in an external eSATA enclosure.

I've only had it a few weeks. I don't expect problems but will post an update if any problems occur. I haven't had a problem with a WD drive since the mid 1990s, so I don't anticipate any trouble.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have five desktop computers and have bought quite a few hard drives over the last nearly 25 years. It's becoming harder to find a good hard drive. Ten years ago I bought mostly Seagate drives, but they have gone downhill.

Five year warranties used to be common, now they are much shorter. WD's Caviar Black is one of the few still carrying a five year warranty, and it's now the only hdd I buy other than WD Velociraptors when they come on sale.

I wanted to buy WD's Caviar Green model, but it has a major design flaw: the energy-saving logic causes it to park its heads too often, which many people feel dramatically shortens the life of the drive. Google "wd green problem" or "wd green wdidle3" for more information. The DOS executable wdidle3.exe can be downloaded from the wd website and may alleviate the problem. It only affects the Green drives, not Black.

My video files represent too much of an investment of time and work creating them. I can't afford losing them, and the Caviar Black drive appears to me to be the most cost-effective way of getting long term reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsNon-RAID drives in RAID configurations

Pros: 2TB, 7200rpm

Cons: Not Solid State or SAS ;)

Other Thoughts: People really need to stop using Non-RAID drives like this model in RAID configurations. The WD "RE" Series is for RAID configurations.

I'm sure these drives work just fine if people would use them for their intended "Single Drive" purpose.

3 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 failes in a windows 7 raid 1

Pros: fast drive, once started , i do video editing of HD footage and these drives are great when working, internal trasfer rates are 100+ mb per second
good thing i had a raid 1 set up.....

Cons: - when first access drive after comp is inactive there is a about 10-15 second delay, some what normal with windows
- 1 of 2 died, i just bought new one then RMAed to WD once raid rebuilt.
- RMA process was painless did have to pay for shipping
figured i would then have a spare, but they sent me a slightly different drive (the 64mb version) and its a RE CERTIFIED, whats that.... (i guess i have to call them)
- is this someone elses drive that they used for a wile then the RE CERTIFIED and now i have it.... idk... im slightly scared to use

Other Thoughts: honestly are there any drives that aren't a 50/50 chance of failure...
idk...
shouldn't HD manufactures be testing these drives before sending out...

also watch out for windows raids as windows doesn't tell you if any of your drives fail, (must go into control panel) also its a guessing game to figure out which drive failed, just pull one and boot see if shows up

1 out of 5 eggsFast, big, and short-lived

Pros: This drive was fast and big.

Cons: My drive failed after one year of use. The WD2001FASS drive that my retail kit drive contained has a 9.71% return rate according to a study done on December 2, 2010 by the French site Hardware.fr, which is a rather high return rate. In other words, nearly one in ten drives based on this model was returned.

Other Thoughts: The model of the drive contained in my retail kit is a WD2001FASS, which has a Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s interface. Its label specified 64MB of cache. I do not know whether to trust the label on the box or on the drive.

1 out of 5 eggsSabotaged to not work in RAID.

Pros: Good performance, Cool black label.

Cons: Willful sabotage(google: TLER) to make them non-function in RAID configurations. Breaking of SATA spec to prevent TLER disable. More expensive than competitors that have no sabotage.

Other Thoughts: I easily buy thousands in hard drives per year. I really like the WD black, up until they sabotaged it to try and channel sales into the RE4($) hard drives. They've even go so far as disabling adjustment of their TLER via SMART, which breaks SATA spec.

These days when hard drives are so unreliable(all of them, really) having hard drives outside of RAID is asking for trouble. WD has went through a lot of trouble to screw home users out of inexpensive disks to use in RAID.
