5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: changed my life with TV media and getting files and videos from my server. Just spend the money.

works great by downloading files to the device and bring on vacation.

blows apple TV out of the water, because is 100x more flexible and controllable

Cons: Could use a larger hard drive.

1 out of 5 eggsWD TV Live Hub Review. A Bulky slow and unstable product.

Pros: Netflix playback is stable
Pictures playback is good.

Cons: 1) Unstable
2) Network connectivity
3) Painfully Slow

Summary: Don’t buy this piece of junk, this is a waste of money. It is good for Netflix or with little collection of pics/songs/home videos.
Here is the detailed review (At the time of review the WD box is updated with the most latest firmware upgrade.

System:
1) The system boot up time is painfully slow, appx 3+ minutes, it is appx 40 seconds slower then windows boot on my notebook. Other Media players boot under 30 seconds

2) The WD box is not responsive to the remote, you keep on pressing the buttons on remote and the system will not respond. It will keep on buffering the remote commands, and will execute all the commands at once. Totally frustrating to the user. Is the box really taking a command from remote or just too slow to respond ?. Even the cheaper media boxes are more responsive.
This slowness happens 50% of time, so sometimes WD box is responsive to remote commands..

3) WD Network: There is no way you can ask the box to discover all the devices on the network. The box runs it own Network discovery, based on its own free will. Is'nt it frustrating that you want to want a stream a movie from your desktop and the WD box does not discovers the PC. You restart, wait for 3 minutes, and still you don’t see the PC connected to the WD Network. It happened couple of times to me.

4) Many times the WD box would suddenly refuse to connect to internet via wired ethernet cable. I don’t know how to fix it. The other media player, while sitting right next to it, connected to the same ethernet switch is perfectly streaming Internet.

Audio
1) One major drawback here, the fast forward only works in 10 to 20 seconds increments, it does not fast forward exponentially. If you are listing to a long track like 50 minutes, and you want to fast forward to last 3 minutes, you have to wait till the pointer reaches in 20 seconds increments to that point. All other media players fast forward exponentially, initially slow and then really fast as the times moves on.

Video:
I have never seen these issues with my other media players from Far East (I have a Mediagate and a Argosy, and very happy with the reliability and responsiveness)

1) YouTube: Interestingly the device would like to retart as you are watching the you tube videos. Very unreliable device during watching videos.

2) If it is unable to play a video file, it will not tell the users. The box will simply hang, the only way out of it, is to actually restart it. Now the whole process takes 5 minutes before you figure out that the format is not playable. My media boxes from Far East are much more reliable, they will immediately tell the users that they cannot play the video file.

3) Sometimes, it will hang will playing a movie. Needs a total restart here. 5 minutes lost here.

4) Definitely not a recommended streaming video player, very unstable.

Other Thoughts: I

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer, we want to extend our sincere apologies for the issue you have experienced. Firmware updates are deployed to improve functionality of devices, such as decreasing processing time it takes to carry out a command from the remote. Information regarding the procedures of how to update the firmware for your device manually or automatically can be located at the following link.

http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5749

If you have already done so and are still experiencing these issues, in the interest of troubleshooting, you may want to reset the device back to factory default, as this will remove any residual configurations that may be causing conflicts within your network from an update that did not fully reset upon reboot of the unit.

We would appreciate the opportunity to assist you on any problems you may have, resulting in a positive resolution to your issue. Please contact us at 1 (800) 275-4932, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/rs/.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome streaming media box, but whats up with the Wifi?

Pros: Love that it does streaming services such as Netflix, hulu Plus, pandora plus many more as well as has internal storage of 1 TB for your personal media as well as networkable to stream content on your personal network.

Cons: the WiFi did NOT work out of the box so it would not pick up an IP address. I plugged it into the router with a network cable and then DHCP assigned the IP and found a firmware upgrade for it so I installed it hoping it would fix the WiFi issue. Have not tested the WiFi yet since then, so I will be doing that this evening.

Other Thoughts: If you're going to plug it into your network router/switch directly then this is an awesome little box for media streaming & playback. If you intend on connecting to your network over the WiFi, expect to hard wire it first to download and install the firmware update first. Hopefully that fixes the WiFi issue.

5 out of 5 eggsMedia Player With WHS Server

Pros: Plays every format file I have thrown at it. I use it primarily to watch movies stored on my windows home server (V1) in .ISO format. The WD users have a great forum where I learned to format all my movie information to my TV (thanks to the users who have created and added to the "thumbgen process".

Cons: None -- It does everything perfectly and never fails to connect and work.

Other Thoughts: Load the latest firmware before you complain. I beta tested their releases and it has had all the problems resolved in the 3.12.13 release.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Media Center

Pros: 1TB hard drive, easy navigation, Netflix, YouTube, etc. Software it ships with maps a drive to your media center, so adding files is just drag and drop. Supports wide range of formats. Plus I can password protect it so my kids don't jump on anytime they want.

Cons: Sometimes the UI is a bit slow. Had one firmware update that messed up my ability to see my media, had to reverse it to prior version. Minor glitches every now and then, solved by resetting media center. I have a few folders that appear twice, not sure why.

Other Thoughts: This has been a great addition to my entertainment center. I love being disk-less, love having my media at my fingertips when I want.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Interface is pretty simple and easy to use. Setup isn't too difficult. Reasonable price considering the amount to HD included.

Cons: In todays market of fairly inexpensive wireless controllers I'm totally surprised WD didn't negotiate a 3 dollar chip. Instead they depend on a lame list of UNTESTED USB wireless keys. I purchased 4 and could only get 1 to work. All other keys (on the list) would not be recognized by WDTV. The only one I could get to work is the Linksys N10. Unfortunately, even 20 feet away, it rarely has over 1 bar. If rebooted it will have 3 bars then after streaming for 5 mins lose connection and bars go down to 1. Tech support call revealed they can read as well as I and then repeated over and over...."If you buy anyone on the list they have been tested".

Engineering: LISTEN UP! Include wireless controller on next device. Most people are not wiring their house any longer. Wireless is the way folks are doing it outside Fremont California! You got it dead on with everything else but it's useless without a hardwire....not how it is sold.

4 out of 5 eggseasy to use and setup

Pros: 1 TB of storage
affordable
HDMI and NTSC

Cons: a little slow during navigation

Other Thoughts: I haven't done anything special with this little unit. It's connected to my network using a cable, not a wireless adapter. Win7 recognizes it as a networked drive so all I do is drag and drop files. There are plenty of services available on it, which I'm assuming is how they subsidize the price of the device. I haven't had any issues with the few services that I use(netflix, youtube, pandora, spotify). The unit worked out of the box and has an intuitive interface. No major complaints.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what it says

Pros: Easy setup. Cheaper than a PS3 which I already own. I needed another stream box and this is perfect.

Cons: After moving a few gigabytes worth of movies from my PC to the WDTV via wired network, I constantly had to do a hard reboot of the WDTV (unplug power for 10 seconds) to get the it to play the movies or connect to Netflix. This is even with the firmware update.

Other Thoughts: Other than the constant hard reboots after moving large amounts of data to the local storage its pretty ok.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy owner for over two years now

Pros: Works like a charm, has been stable for me. File format support, video info scrapping (tags), 1 tb hard drive and extra ports for other drives, also works with usb hubs for even more storage drives. Transfer speeds for me are not lightening fast, but I usually get 11 to 12 mbs so I don't understand how some say 5 mbs. It is plenty fast for me to do my bluray rips directly to the 1 tb drive or what ever usb external is plugged into it. And lots of interface themes and the themes are easily customized for what ever look might appeal to you. Fairly regular firmware updates over the internet.

Cons: Non for me, it does everything it is supposed to do. There are some negative reviews here, but one has to consider that some will have problems with any device.

Other Thoughts: Media scrapping for music would be nice for them to add.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great. No issues

Pros: It works. plays even .flv files. I've read reviews of slow transfers...but it wasn't. maybe that was older firmwares but mine transferred and showed up in the playlist very quickly. I was copying files over cat5 not usb.

Cons: I couldn't find any.

Other Thoughts: I purely use it for playing movies and looking at pictures. the movie feature works great for me.
