4 out of 5 eggsGood value, questionable QA

Pros: The WD Green series drives offer a lot of storage for not a lot of money. They work great as a secondary storage drive for a modest home computer.

Cons: The green drives aren't very fast (but they're not meant to be). They won't stay connected in a RAID array (but they're not meant to be). The build quality is iffy.

Other Thoughts: I purchased a quartet of the 2TB units and a quartet of 1.5TB units a while back for use in Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces. Six of them still running strong. One of the 2TB and one of the 1.5TB drives in the bunch exhibited SMART errors pretty quickly after receiving it. I RMA'd the 2TB unit and got a replacement unit of the same model but the 1.5TB was outside warranty. However, THAT replaced 2TB drive failed, too - within a couple of months - so I RMA'd it, as well. This time, they shipped me a this 2.5TB model. We'll see if it holds up.

Yes, I know the green drives aren't meant for RAID. Storage Spaces isn't RAID in a traditional sense. It simply concatenates standalone volumes at the OS level into a storage pool. The OS and underlying hardware handles the drives as standalone units so the TLER issue that normally causes drives to drop from a traditional RAID array doesn't apply. It works great - when the hard disks don't keep exhibiting SMART errors... If you get a "good" one, they're great for the intended purpose and will last. If you get a "bad" one, don't hesitate to RMA it ASAP.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't just Don't

Pros: Price, it was good deal I thought. Just don't do it

Cons: 4 DOA and had issues on the RMA's. WD requires original boxes for shipping, but NewEgg sends in bulk pack cut up Styrofoam. So I had to source a box for returns. 2 RMA's were OK, number 3 was another type drive and I couldn't get the last one returned before the limited warranty ran out.

Other Thoughts: I got done in by buying Refurbished drives. All 4 spun up but all had logic issues. The drives would be seen, then drop out, stop spinning, just didn't work right, copy files then corrupt. The refurbished drive don't come in original WD boxes so I had to go to my office to scrounge a WD drive box to get the RMA's going. 2 of the RMA's are still running, third one is a different model and size. So much for raid 5 set. And just ran out of time on the 4th to return. I will not buy Refurbished drives again. The price saved is lost on returns and total loss. WD was good on just replacing the drives without issues.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in under 24 hours

Pros: None

Cons: Ordered 5 of these drives for a raid system. 2 drives were dead out of the box and the third died in under 24 hours. Will be RMAing these back for a refund. Do your self a favor and stay away from these drives.

Other Thoughts: Newegg shipping as usual was fast and unlike some of the other reviews the drives were packaged well. Must just be a bad batch of drives.

Please note that WD Green hard drives are not recommended for use in RAID environments running multiple drive RAID beyond RAID 1 & RAID 0. For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider WD’s Enterprise Hard Drives or WD RED, that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), NASware (WD Red), which are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing. 1 out of 5 eggsfailed chkdsk right off the bat

Pros: price seemed good for a 2.5TB drive

Cons: failed chkdsk - many bad sectors found...probably due to the sloppy packaging for shipment. The drive was in a smaller box inside a larger box but lacking any material to cushion it, so the small box just slid around inside the big box (my guess is it was damaged from this). Won't bother getting it replaced since it will most likely be packaged poorly again. I'm out the shipping cost to RMA it and will shop elsewhere for another hard drive.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Solarus and Josh said it all.

Capacity, cache size, cost, transfer rate of 100Mb/s or better.

Cons: It is now Deactivated and I want more...

Other Thoughts: Windows 7 won't recognize the drive until you format it in Disk Management.

5 out of 5 eggsArrived, installed, works

Pros: Capacity, cache size, cost. Did not arrive DOA, so kudos to Newegg for great packaging in a large box with bubble wrap all around the drive inside a smaller box.

Cons: None yet, hopefully this drive will last for a long time.

Other Thoughts: After connecting the drive inside your PC, Win 7 won't recognize the drive until you go through Manage process in Computer properties in the pre-existing Win 7 installation on your old drive. Pretty straight forward - Initiate, then Format, and you are good to go. I assume that fresh Win 7 installation from BIOS will detect the drive and format it prior to installation.

5 out of 5 eggsNo complaints. Pure storage.

Pros: Extra capacity. The drive operates quiet. Has a Sata III controller for extra bandwith, ( not speed). This allows me to download and upload simultaneously.

Cons: None yet. Will update of any issues occur.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive to add to my PC / Server. My 1 TB and 1.5 TB drives were filling up gradually. I am using this strictly for storage of large files that I have been constantly making. The Sata 6/Gb's is handy for extra bandwith and not for speed. The more bandwith means I can upload and download constantly at larger bitrate. Copying files transfer at a rate of 110 Mb/s which is good for large file transfers.

Overall, this drive get the job done and has been serving me well in the server world.

2 out of 5 eggsOne died after 2 days

Pros: quiet and cool, seems pretty fast too. One of the drives I bought is still working 3 days later.

Cons: Bought two for mirroring, one died after 2 days and had to RMA to WD directly in CA. I hate paying for shipping TWICE for something that i just bought. Hope the other hard drive continues to work.

Other Thoughts: I gave two eggs because overall I like WD, but NOBODY wants to buy something and have to send it back 3 days later. I have a new PC sitting here on my desk for at least another week while this broken HD makes it across the country and back for the RMA... ugh. If i could find this drive locally I would have just bought it at B***B** down the street.
