1 out of 5 eggsDo your homework first

This review is from: WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good price for what you hope to get.

Cons: Not compatible with all systems if older BIOS or storage controller not up to date.

Other Thoughts: Despite the happy talk from WD this drive is not 3tb compatible with some PC systems, even if only as a storage drive partitioned to avoid 2.1 tb limitation. (i.e 3x1tb partitions). My several year old Intel board uses Intel Rapid Storage Technology for my twin WD black veloci-raptor drives. It's a nice machine and I have no real performance need to upgrade it. My OS is Win7-64. After much chasing around the Google I determined that my M/B RST can only be upgraded to ver. 9.6. Unfortunately, WD reports that ver. 10.0 or higher is needed to be able to use this Green drive as a partitioned storage drive. I'm not willing to go through an upgrade of my M/B just to make this drive usable. This headache plus negative reviews is causing me to return the drive. I should have done more homework before purchase. I've returned the drive and will try again with a better drive that is only 2tb.

5 out of 5 eggs171 hours and working fine.

This review is from: WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Drive is working great, sequential reads and writes to the drive vary from 130MB/s to 70 MB/s. It holds more than the file server I ran for years on one drive than I had on 4 from just a couple years ago.

It performs well and was not DOA.

It supports smart monitoring and has a tool so that you can change the time before the heads park to be something more suitable for your use. Normally a desktop this would be fine for a few years use but it can be extended to 300 seconds (5 minutes) or even turned off.

Cons: 8 seconds. That is how long it takes for the drive to be idle before it parks the heads. This wouldn't be such a bad thing except the heads are only designed to be parked around 300,000 times. It may sound like a lot but I would rather spend a little more on power than to lose data.

Some people while not using in recommended situations have racked up 800,000 parking operations in less than a year.

Other Thoughts: WDidle3, google it, SERIOUSLY!!!

It's a tool published by Western Digital to change the idle time before parking. If you are like me you will increase the time to save wear and tear on the heads.

I am using the in a FreeBSD variant and did a short, conveyance and long SMART test followed by a four pass marathon of BadBlocks. After another smart test the drive was performing just fine. For those unaware of what bad blocks does here is a little info:

Badblocks performs a pattern write to the complete drive followed by a complete read. The patterns are, 01010101 10101010 11111111 00000000

On my 3TB WD Green a single write pass took approx seven hours followed by another seven hours of reading. So the drive was worked solid for right around 56 hours straight. If it can pass that with flying colors then I think it's safe to trust with my data.

If you are getting a drive and not checking it for problems before you put your important data on it then do not complain when there is an issue. You have to think about how complex these things really are.

In 1956 a five MegaByte hard drive was nearly as large as a two refrigerators side by side.

The heads flying over the media float on a cushion of air about 3 nanometers over the disk which in this drives case is spinning at around 5400 RPM. This is the equivalent of a 747 flying at around mach 800 less than 1 centimeter from the ground counting every blade of grass while making less than ten unrecoverable counting errors in an area the size of ireland.

3 out of 5 eggsFACTS about the lifespan of this drive

This review is from: WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of storage, speed was fast enough to hold all my movies and tv which is all I used it for.

Cons: I just got a warning of this drive about to fail, as it stands right now it has 528 "Power On' counts and 23960 hours on. I find this disappointing considering my 1tb WD Black still works great at 1225 "Power On" counts and 41739 hours on and thats not to mention the WD Black was tortured in comparison.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst purchase in quite awhile

This review is from: WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: failed to burn my house down

Cons: Stored some backups on the drive, shelved it, and tried to recover data after 2 years. Drive was useless, reports too many bad sectors.

This is absolutely the worst product I've encountered so far in 10 years; judging by the other reviews at least I don't feel alone.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Not much to say really. It's quiet and runs just fine. Data transfer speeds are good enough for storage which is all I really use it for. Aside from the RMA (see Cons) I've had the drive operating constantly for about 6 months and it's been great.

Cons: The first one I ordered wasn't reading the full amount of space on the drive, I think it lost somewhere around 700mb. I had to RMA it and also had to pay for shipping of the RMA which is why I've dropped an egg from the rating. Otherwise it was accepted and I was shipped another one in a timely matter. No other issues.

Other Thoughts: Great drive for the price if you're mostly just looking for a storage option that isn't being accessed 24/7.

1 out of 5 eggsWD HDD DOA

This review is from: WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Under $90 for a 3TB is a great buy. WD HDD reputation. Systems recognized it and did the usual initializating, formatting, etc.

Cons: I consider this HDD from WD a DOA for me. Windows just would not format this HDD. I tried formatting it as a GPT and MBR, both failed. Since I planned on having this HDD as an internal 2nd drive and not a boot drive I thought the process would be a breeze. I got messages: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) and "Windows unable to format this drive..."
First install of this unit as an INTERNAL 2nd drive on my desktop with the following specs: CPU/RAM: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Watch/16GB; OS DRIVE/OS: SAMSUNG SSD EVO/WINDOWS 8.1 PRO 64-BIT "Windows unable to format this drive..." Second install of this unit as an internal 2nd drive on my laptop via eSATA Dell drive bay with the following specs: CPU/RAM: Dell Latitude E6420-I7 Intel I7-2760QM/8GB OS DRIVE/OS: PNY SSD/WINDOWS 7 PRO 64-BIT. After two days for frustration, time to return this HDD.

Other Thoughts: Rezing it to 2TB and 1TB using my licensed copy of EASEUS Partition Master did not help. Disappointed but it was a good try. I'll try another model 3TB from WD or from another OEM.
