2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large capacity, easy configuration, cheap

Cons: Completely unreliable. Large capacity coupled with unreliable means of storage equals data disaster. I will never count on WD again to safeguard my data. Obviously you get what you pay for here. Lesson learned. Avoid WD like the plague.

Other Thoughts: This was a drive failure as evidenced by the results from data lifeguard tools. This should be covered by WD and replaced, but alas it was not. Good thing I only lost 3TB of data. I nearly bought the 4TB WD drive but I have learned my lesson and switched to Toshiba.

1 out of 5 eggsOrdered two; both DOA

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Who knows? I couldn't initialize the drive.

Cons: I ordered two and both were DOA. I tried three different hard drive controllers (one USB dock, one eSATA dock, and a Dell PERC SATA controller on R515 server) and none recognized the drive properly. There were all sorts of strange errors in Windows (Server 2012). The USB dock got the closest where a drive actually appeared in disk manager, but then would get a CRC error when initializing.

Other Thoughts: Drives seem to be DOA at a much higher rate than in the past. Cheap manufacturing I guess?

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsError in three weeks

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - Lots of storage space
- Made by Western Digital
- Brand new

Cons: - Owned for three weeks then Windows reports there is an error on the drive.

Other Thoughts: I really don't think an error should appear within a month or even three months of owning a brand new hard drive. I hope I can somehow get this fixed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi CacsTech, it is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Hard Drive. Please note that there are many variables that can result in a failed drive, such as power outages, accidental physical damage, and internal component failure, just to name a few. As a troubleshooting step, we recommend running either our WINDLG diagnostics software or Macs built-in Disk Utility to check your drives health.

3 out of 5 eggsOne Good, One Bad

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought two drives. The one that did work is great! Transfer speed is pretty good.

Cons: One of them was DOA. Wasn't able to initialize the disk in Disk Management. I am RMA-ing for a replacement. Hopefully I will have better luck with the replacement.

Other Thoughts: Although I did get a DOA drive, I'm sure it was just a "luck of the draw" thing. I would still recommend the WD Green drives, as I have had a 1 TB one that is almost 5 years old, and still going strong.

1 out of 5 eggsFailure to read, and transfer errors.

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Price was right and this was my second WD Green 3TB hard drive.

Cons: Failure to read, and transfer errors.

Other Thoughts: I initialized and formatted the hard drive using transfer cables. I spent all day transferring over around 1TB of data. I kept getting transfer errors so I thought there may be a problem with my cables. I installed the drive into an external case, and the computer wouldn't recognize the hard drive. It was acting like a brand new bare drive. It wanted me to initialize and format the disk again!

Once again I initialized and formatted the disk. I then transferred around 20GB over with it inside the external enclosure. Once complete I pulled the drive and tried hooking it up to the computer via the transfer cables. The computer acted like it was a brand new drive and once again wanted me to initialize and format the drive.

I am not wasting any more time with this drive. It is going back to newegg!

I bought the exact same drive a month before and it works flawless (so far). Doesn't matter if I hook up using transfer cables or with it inside an external case. I just hope I can get the 2+ TB of data backed up before it decides to go belly up.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsNice, solid HDD

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Very quiet, almost no rotation whine or coil chatter.

Runs very cool, two of these in a small Raid 1 NAS enclosure don't even need a fan.

Attractively-priced for 3 TB of digital storage.

Very power-efficient, one of the big advantages to this model of HDD.

Installed, formatted and tested in a snap, no issues.

Cons: Not the fastest HDD on the block, but not terrible, the following test is versus a Seagate 4TB NAS drive, as it was the closest I had on hand in capacity and platter-speed to this new WD Green:

The Seagate, with its higher maximum rotation speed, pulled away from the WD in the Sequential tests, but the Random tests were more closely paired. Still, the Seagate was the winner here without much debate.

Other Thoughts: I've had two of these running in a WD MyBook Live Duo for about 2 years now with never a hiccup or giggle, they were the stock HDDs supplied with the device.

I was a bit concerned that a Green-series drive wouldn't be fast or durable enough, but so far, my fears have been unfounded, I've had nothing but solid performance from the little Raid 1 array since the day it booted up. They're more than fast enough for long-term storage, streaming media, file-sharing, etc. I wouldn't use them in a high-performance gaming rig, or a ten-drive Raid array, but they'd be right at home just about anywhere else. I do like the fact that they help my NAS unit use as little power as possible, since it runs 24/7.

I bought this new one as a spare in case either of the two in the MyBook should expire, although I've had no indication of any such issue, it was purely a "just in case" thing.

The Green-series drives probably won't ever win any speed contests (unless they're up against UltraDMA 133 drives from 10 years ago) but they should provide affordable, reliable and economical performance for many years to come. Your situation may vary.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine and Quiet

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 3TB and quiet

Cons: None so far....

Other Thoughts: Only gave 4 stars since life is still unknown... No problems other than that.

Some have mentioned that this drive will not work for HD Vid files. This is NOT true. That is in fact the only thing I use this drive for is serving videos and audio files. It's transfer rate has no problem with 1080 files compressed and uncompressed. I am only using it has a storage drive and the system drive is separate. My guess is that people having problems are asking this drive to be a system drive also.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Green 3TB Intellipower SATA 6.0 HDD Internal Bare Drive - OEM

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: --Affordable & does what it is intended to do (storage)
--Energy saver
--3 TB, great value for the price

Cons: --None, unless your HDD came DOA

Other Thoughts: --Please read the HDD specs before purchasing the HDD of your choice from Western Digital. Green stands for storage drive, not an operating systems hard drive.

--Does take a few seconds to power up and spin when using the HDD for storage or watching movies.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat until it died...

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Drive was a good but at the time for 3TB

Cons: Drive failed in the system as of 2/21/14, drive was purchased on 12/12/13 installed around 12/18/13. Drive no longer responds to SMART commands and will not show up at all under Ubuntu as a block device.

Other Thoughts: Would really like to RMA to Western Digital, I have only bought their drives for years because of the great reliability I have had.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Blsmit5728, it is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Hard Drive. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties.
