2 out of 5 eggsNot good

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap?

Cons: I have done all the research, I have done everything I can do. It is formatted properly with 4k sectors on Win 7 64. It will slow down to a CRAWL when transferring larger files/folders. It starts strong, then within a few minutes it will be transferring at 4MB/s.

I know it isn't a speed demon drive, but this is ridiculous. What my 1TB WD black series drives will do in a 5 minutes, this will take 4.5 HOURS. So it isn't "just because it is a slow drive".. It is "just because it's a defective drive".

RMA'ing and I am not going to get a replacement. I want a refund and I will buy something else. I have very good luck with hard drives over the years.. wait.. decades.

These things seems to be junk. Waste of time.

Other Thoughts: This is the second attempt to submit a review. First attempt just sat and spun. Why is Newegg site so slow?

1 out of 5 eggsAs others have stated, Avoid like the plague

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: At the time, price.

Cons: Everything else.

I bought two of these drives to bulk up on my archiving capacity. I purposely kept them out of any hard work and they have given me nothing but trouble along with a triplet of Blacks. One of the drives failed about 4.5 years into the warranty (out of 5). Annoying, but not that big of a deal. I keep everything important backed up so it's just configuration inconvenience at worst. The replacement however died just ~8 months later. The problem is the replacement inherited the original's warranty and didn't have one of its own (also understandable). But this taught me a really important lesson. Warranty drives get demoted to scratch disks.

Other Thoughts: These WD greens are by far the most unreliable harddrives I've had to deal with. Especially since the failure rate swings so wildly. I can't even put faith into them to last 8 months so now I'm really paranoid and have multiple 3tb drives of "Dead weight" for archiving because they are useless for their job. Reel to reel is more reliable than one of these sitting in a cool dry place.

The new drive failing 3 months outside of the global warranty has put off from WD for a good long while. I "gave WD a chance" since Seagate rolled their warranties back from 5 years. Despite what everyone writes aboud Seagate, I've had the worst "luck" from WD. Every single line of their drives that I've invested in has had above a 50% failure rate withing their warranty period. Blacks about a year, these greens, about 2.5-3.5 years (not counting this ~8 month one).

I get this is anecdotal data, but the two greens that failed were from years different batches. The various blacks that failed were from different sub-model number lines.

I simply have no faith in the company anymore. gave them their chance and now they blew it.

1 out of 5 eggsComplete Garbage

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Can't even find a pro after this experience

Cons: Reliability, performance

Other Thoughts: Purchased 4 drives 3 have failed in 3 months or less. Multiple RMAs along with WDs abysmal customer support. I haven't had drives this unreliable since the early 90's. It was like going back to the dark ages of HD technology. Avoid like the plague, you've been warned.

1 out of 5 eggsFAILED SOON AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Big, Quiet

Cons: FAILED few months after warranty expired.

Other Thoughts: Have had several 3TB Seagate and Western digital drives fail after about 2 years. Still have plenty of 2TB and older/smaller drives still working well.
These drives were one of the first that went from a 3-5 year warranty to a 2 year, so it seems all by design.

BAD DESIGN!

5 out of 5 eggsCorrected Review

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Performs as advertised. Great price for storage drive. In my 8/22/14 review I posted the drive reporting as being less than 3TB and this was true. However I didn't mention I was using a SATA drive dock. Where my 3TB Black drive shows as the proper 2.72TB the green drive was only showing 747 MB. Returned to WD via RMA and received the replacement drive several days later. Same issue. Called support and advised the same. I did mention I was using this for storage of raw telescope image data and used a SATA drive dock. He suggested connecting the drive internally and all showed up fine when initialized and volume set. Read the drive again in the drive dock and the full 2.72TB drive shows as it should.

Never occurred to me the drive dock was the weak link. The drive dock is an older Thermaltake USB2/e-SATA model which has worked excellent for years. I was not aware of limitations on the drive sizes usable on these. Like I said the 2TB Green and 3TB Black drives worked fine.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you have a problem and use an external dock such as this, try the drive internally before thinking the drive is bad. It never occurred to me as I use this dock very often. I've been backing up the telescope raw image files, GBs at a time for years without issue using this dock.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for HTPC / Steambox

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I wanted quiet, low power storage for my living room PC and that is what I got with this drive. It is more or less silent at couch distance in a very porous Antec 300 case. To actually hear the drive I have to put my face down near the PC or intentionally load up some drive-intensive tasks. For browsing, video, and gaming purposes, I can't hear this drive.

Performance is very good; I can stream 720p video to two tablets simultaneously while also running a Steam backup or playing a game, no problem. The games I have tested so far (Dark Souls, Sleeping Dogs) load much faster than they did on the 8-year old SATA 3.0 WD that this drive replaces.

As for reliability, I have never had a WD product fail on me. All of my previous WD drives have run well into obsolescence, and I expect this one will do the same.

Cons: Not SSD fast... but the only time you notice that is while booting.

I don't have enough games and media to fill it.

2 out of 5 eggsFirst one DOA, second one working

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Power consumption is low, speed is not horrible. Quiet.

Cons: First one was DOA. Didn't even spin up, just sat there making horrible clicking noises. My other WD Green drives have both thrown an uncorrectable sector, corrupting data.

2 year warranty reflects, sadly, about how long I expect this drive to last, unlike the 8+ years I used to get out of WD.

Other Thoughts: First of all, I would have saved myself the $10 return shipping for the DOA drive if I had bought it elsewhere. Sorry Newegg.

Secondly, why does the Green series have to equal dirt cheap but unreliable? There must be other people like me who want to spend a bit more for quality, longevity, a better warranty, AND good power consumption.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Big, cheap, solid performer so far.

Cons: Not the fastest, but I didn't buy them for their speed.

Other Thoughts: I am gradually replacing all my 2tb WD Green drives with the 3 tb version. I use 4 of them them in a linux fileserver and another 4 in a Drobo. backing up the fileserver. I generally replace the drives about every 2 years, and have not had a disk failure for at least 4 years. I'm fine with their level of performance for my needs.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: A good drive. I am using two of these 3tb WD drives for primary storage alongside a SSD for the C: drive. The drive. I have noticed that these drives are cost effective compared to black drives, so I chose these.

Cons: The drive RPM at 5400 is less than that of black drives, but the cost savings are significant. Only if doing very hard drive intensive work should the black drives be considered, in my opinion.
