2 out of 5 eggsGreen Drives in General

Pros: Green drives are inexpensive and for the ones who want some extra storage at a low cost and will not be running the system all the time.

Cons: Now if you actually use your computer and the rate of I/O is up there and the system is on 24/7 then the Green drives will fail, I have had Blues, Greens, Segate, Maxtor, Samsung and Hitachi drives all fail. However the drives I have noticed over the last 10 years with the highest fail rates are the Greens, then the Blues.

This is an easy fix, JUST BUY BLACKS, they have a 5 year warranty and I have 8 of them in various systems and no failures yet, (all drives will fail) I also have 4 Red NAS drives and some AV drives, but have not had them long enough to see how they hold up, they transfer a little slower than the Caviar Blacks

Other Thoughts: Green/Blue Drives = Safety deposit box for storage and access once a year to make a backup of personal stuff.

Black Drives = Everything else and actual computer use

Manufacturer Response:

Dear 54lariat, we appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. Please note that our WD Green line of internal hard drives are designed for use as secondary drives in PCs, for external enclosures and other applications for which low noise, low heat and low power consumption are the priority. For drives oriented more on the side of performance, you might be interested in the WD Black or VelociRaptor line.

5 out of 5 eggsHow to get the drive working (in Windows)

Pros: Green! Low power/noise, immense size!

Cons: None, I've owned this drive for 5 months.

Other Thoughts: I have to wonder about all the DOA reports... in order to get this drive working it needs to be "initialized" first using Windows' Disc Management tool. After you've brought up DIsc Management and you go to initial the disk DO NOT USE "MBR", you HAVE TO USE "GPT" ...WIndows won't see anything larger than 2TB unless it's initialized using "GPT". Then format.... Windows Explorer won't see this drive unless you follow these steps. In my admittedly short experience I've had no problems with this drive... works beautifully in my HTPC build.

1 out of 5 eggsavoid this drive

Pros: Large 3TB

Cons: If you want to lose your data then get this drive.
Purchase this drive (not from newegg) 2 months ago and it just wouldn't show up on my computer. Tried 3 different computers, same problem. Tried to connect it through USB in a USB enclosure still nothing.

Lost all my data that I saved for years for my business.
Shame on WD for making such a drive.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Large storage space
-uses low power
-quiet
-runs cool
-for a HDD, it's fast.
-great for gamers such as myself.

Cons: Price, see other

Other Thoughts: I Read some reviews and was nervous about buying and getting this from shipped since many people get it DOA. I ended up buying it from a local outlet for a lower price and it works like a charm.

Now after installing windows on my SSD and trying to use this as storage, I ran into a little problem that I solved. I'll share this with other potential buyers of this product so they'll know how to solve this problem if they run into it like I did.

If you use this as a Storage drive and use another HDD or a SSD you will need to format this drive to make it appear under "My Computer". Also the computer will split the drive into two since it's capacity is so large. I forget exactly what I did to get it working, but basically you need to format the drive and right click to merge the two "parts" of the drive to make the computer realize that it's one big drive (and then it'll show up as 2.72 TB not the full 3TB) and after that you can assign it a drive letter and away you go.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None really.

Cons: Defective. When I put it the computer I heard loud strange noises coming from the hard drive immediately. This hard drive made the motherboard reboot over and over until it just *killed* the motherboard. Now looking at the other reviews, I wouldn't trust these drives with my data even if I got a replacement. Do yourself a big favor and avoid. Now I have a dead motherboard!

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Drive

Pros: Great capacity, low power draw, mostly quiet (see note in con)

Recording two HD channels simultaneously to the drive was not a problem using an Hauppauge 2250.

Cons: Only complaint is that some times I can hear the r/w noise. Only noticeable when I am surfing on the media center with no audio playing so it is most likely in the 19 to 21 db range basis the distance I sit.

Other Thoughts: Nice drive for an HTPC.

3 out of 5 eggsSame as WD30EZRSDTL

Pros: 3TB, low power

Cons: slowish

Other Thoughts: First time I have ever had a problem with newegg support. The CS rep, just bluffed me off. When I asked what model this REALLY was.

I contacted WD and found out it was WD30EZRSDTL.
