3 out of 5 eggsRetrabished

Pros: Cheap, quick

Cons: Lasted only 1.5 years before collapsing.

Other Thoughts: Buy new and don't dual boot unless you have a dual drive.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid Refurbished HDD's

Pros: Newegg got it to me in great time. The RMA process went smoothly so far.

Cons: I swear by WD drives, usually. I purchased this "Refurbished" WD Black 750GB drive because I had two others, that I have been using for a while in RAID 1. I decided to use this refurb to create a RAID 1 array in my other computer. It worked long enough for me to get Windows 7 installed, all my software installed, and all my Steam games installed, then I hear a POP and smell burning. It was this drive that gave up the ghost in less than a week. I think the problem is in the "refurbishment" not the typical quality of WD drives. Not including this one, I have only had two WD drives fail on me in 14 years. Because of the danger of loss of data, I do not recommend buying refurbished HDD's.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Black, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
We are very sorry to hear that your drive did not function so soon after it was delivered. Western Digital does rigorously test and verify all of our drives, prior to shipping, with burn-in and diagnostic tests, regardless of whether they are new or recertified.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Purchased 4 of these over 3 years ago and they are rock solid. Never had one issue, error, or problem what so ever with them. WD Caviar Black drives are top of the line. I have had several other brands fail on me in shorter periods of time. Caviar Black series are built to last. Data storage is not a place to cut corners on.

Cons: NONE

1 out of 5 eggsStay away!!!

Pros: Not much

Cons: Died in 4 months...Western Digital Customer Service is the worst in the business.

Other Thoughts: In Dec. 2011, I built a new computer using a newly minted version of this Caviar Black 750 GB SATA drive for storage. It worked fine until May, when it stopped booting. Running Western's diagnostic utility on it revealed it to be bad. I RMA"d it to Western for evaluation and in about a month, a hard drive arrived from them along with no paperwork. I assumed it was a replacement, but I already replaced it in my computer so I set the drive aside for future use.
A month ago, my wife's computer died, so I built her a new machine and used the WD in it. I couldn't get her new computer to format the hard drive. Eventually, I put a good Seagate in it and it worked perfectly. Apparently, the "replacement" I got from Western Digital with no explanation was the same piece of junk I sent them to evaluate that they made no attempt to repair. As a result of this experience, I won't use a Western Drive in anything I build in the future. The product is poor, and the support is even poorer.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None so far. Will not work in three different computers.

Cons: Came in DOA. Applied for RMA.

Other Thoughts: I have bought many WD refurbished drives in the past without problem. Guess I was due for a bad one. If it gets replaced and the next one works, I don't see this as a big deal.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 2 years

Pros: High capacity - Fast for what it was, but much slower then a SSD

Cons: Barely lasted 2 years.. Almost lost everything, but was able to use the computer just enough to where I could burn 2 disc of my personal files, then after that unusable.. So many bad sectors it can't even be repaired..
