5 out of 5 eggsPick This Up !

Pros: I have the 450 GB version of this as bulk storage currently teamed with a Samsung 840 Pro, 256 GB SSD boot drive for a gaming machine. This drive has been my goto favorite for the past three years. Its been on three Mobos paired with three SSDs and started as my boot drive before going with my first SSD. Used this as a boot drive for about 6 months before installing an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD. I'm sure benchmarks may have changed, but real world - I didn't notice any difference.

Cons: If you can't get used to the little clicks as its working, then maybe this isn't for you. I find it sort of reassuring on an otherwise silent machine.

Other Thoughts: I've been waiting a couple years for these to go on sale again.

1 out of 5 eggs2nd Dud in 1 year

Pros: Not quite sure there are any "Pros"

Cons: This one is replacing another Raptor that went bad within 1 year (actually I think it was bad from the start but I hung in with it until just recently it died). I'm not sure why since this was a straight exchange in my system. Nothing else changed. Clean Win 7 install... everything fresh. The mobo drivers are installed correctly etc etc. I cannot get better than 126/126 mb/s for the read/writes. This thing is a dog. It's going to be sent back this week.

Other Thoughts: Maybe I bought the wrong drive? This one was marked "Enterprise Storage" so maybe the read/writes aren't supposed to be that fast(?)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives

Pros: Upgraded from my 6 seagate 7k drives in raid 0 to 4 of these 10k drives. These things are much quicker across the board, read, write, random r/w, latency, all quicker.
Software and games load in the blink of an eye. Boot time was shortened by about half.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Been rocking these for over 2 years with no issues.

5 out of 5 eggsFast But still...

Pros: Great drive for the times/cost but I don't think strictly mechanicals will be around for to much longer. Maybe 3 or 4 years.

Cons: Hybrids are way faster and coming down in price. Slow compared to hybrid drives.

Other Thoughts: Thinking of replacing mine with a hybrid and using this to archive.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great.

Pros: Fast drive, not too noisy, good price for performance.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I used this as my main drive for over a year in my gaming computer and it worked great. It isn't too noisy and boot / program load times were fast. I've since moved onto a SSD and I'm not using it as storage, but for price vs performance it's a great value for the budget minded rig builder.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Perfomance

Pros: Bought this as a less expensive alternative to SSD a little over a year ago as my primary boot drive. Has performed just as expected, not up to SSD speeds but much faster than 7200rpm. No regrets.

Cons: No problems. Still going strong after a year.

Other Thoughts: Handles a load well. I typically boot my OS + a single VM from this drive without perceptible lag from either system.

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing can take the heat

Pros: -fantastic performance
-takes abuse, see story below
-fantastic discount, thank you newegg

Cons: -not an SSD, but sure as heck not as costly as one this size

Other Thoughts: -accidentally installed windows on it as an A: drive, had to make a partition and install windows as a C: drive o that, then hoped on a linux thub drive the extend the new partition over the A: drive... used like 10 recovery things, and it worked like a charm

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Price was great, Western Digital support rep was nice and helped me create a RMA

Cons: Dead in the box. To create the RMA, they will put a temporary $165 charge on my credit card until they get their drive back. I'm sure that is standard practice for everyone, but still...I also have to wait 3-5 days

Other Thoughts: I know every company is going to create a bad device at some point, but it is still disappointing to open a new box and have a dead unit inside. I'm sure I'll continue to buy WD hard drives
