5 out of 5 eggsMy Go-To Drives, Along with the Velociraptors!

Pros: - Fast! Seriously fast!
These drives outperform the Black 1TB drives by about 5-11% in sequential throughput and by over thirty percent in Random workloads!
- Reliable, enough that I have been "building up" a number of RAID arrays over the past 1 1/2 years (maybe a bit longer), and out of over four-dozen of these drives, I have had exactly one failure after formatting, but it was a redundant drive and I was even given the time to Hotswap a spare in before it fully failed thanks to TLER+TRIM!
- These still have the full 5yr warranty, but I don't foresee needing it as a drive that works out of the box, and has no bad sectors, will likely last longer than you will use it, with my experience being that if these drives die they do so in the first week of use
- You can seriously push massive quantities of data through these, continuously and without any problems, for an indefinite period of time. I have a pair, the first pair that I purchased, currently sitting happy at 31C (22C ambient) in an external RAID box, with a lifetime total of over 700TB of writes, each, and not a single bad sector between them!
- Unless you have the need for the extra speed of an array of 15Krpm SAS drives, these are by far the best RAID drives for the money!

They work perfectly well as independent drives, too, with Read/Write speeds of around 145MBs each, and the burst speeds (cache) saturates the available bandwidth if running from a single SATA3Gbps port!

I suggest buying these in bulk, as well, as the packaging is MUCH better, and anymore these days if I receive a package from the Egg that I can hear "rattle" without opening, I simply stick a "try again next time, thanks" note and refuse delivery.

Cons: - You WILL risk dead drives if you don't get lucky with one of the better "packagers"...

- RAID Controller Cards are expensive, and you won't get anywhere near the potential of these drives in an array without one

- While the speed is phenomenal for the rotation speed, I have a 12x600GB VR array and a 24x600GB 15Krpm SAS RAID100 array (drives short-stroked to 320GB and never go below 190MB/s per drive) which both can push numbers that put the RE4's to shame, but those two arrays cost over 5x as much as my 24-drive RAID50 and 30-drive RAID500 arrays combined!

Other Thoughts: I couldn't be happier with WD, and I am looking forward to building smaller arrays with similar space once the 1TB/platter RE series come to fruition.

I do professional high-level audio and video editing and some animation, and I keep everything I have ever done 3x over, so I built a home server that has gotten a bit ridiculous. Thus, the desire to downsize physically, although I will miss saturating a pair of teamed 10Gbps connections!

The home server is running a pair of 4core 1366 Xeon's, 92GB DDR3-1600 ECC, a single FirePro GPGPU, 4x 120GB SSD's for OS, and 4x LSI/Adaptec RAID Controller Cards (512-4096MB DDR3 Cache, BBU's) with a pair of 5000VA UPS's.

Why not, ya know?

1 out of 5 eggshorrible ! stay away

Pros: absolutely nothing, did a big mistake

Cons: it breaks in a few weeks

Other Thoughts: bought two, then replaced them because there was clicking sounds, then after a couple of more weeks starting hearing clicking sounds on the replacements and all data was lost

1 out of 5 eggsNot good for RAID

Pros: - Cheap
- Drive series is excellent

Cons: I tried two of these drives in a RAID 0 configuration for games and after a couple months of use one of them failed on me and I was forced to buy two of the retail versions instead. I used the remaining drive in a RAID 5 and now it seems to be causing some faults there too.

Other Thoughts: If you're doing a RAID, go for the retail versions and save yourself the grief.

1 out of 5 eggsSpend the extra money

Pros: Inexpensive enterprise grade drive. Sounds great.

Cons: You get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: Thankfully Newegg has some great customer service. After receiving the second drive DOA, I will be purchasing a new in box drive.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD RE4 1TB, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
It is unfortunate that you experienced a DOA drive, as our drives are all rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before leaving our warehouse. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties.

5 out of 5 eggsHeck YEAH!

Pros: Ok... Here's the low-down. Usually I expect around 10% failures with new equipment, it's just part of the computer industry. So I ordered 6 of these drives and was expecting 1-2 to be failures. 1 was DOA, another 1 was unstable and wouldn't stay up in the RAID array. Newegg RMA new drives, and the new ones are running fine for the past couple of days.

Cons: 2 were bad (out of 6), which is what I was expecting... RMA'ed drvies look good.

Other Thoughts: I'll update the posting if I have any additional issues. But the RAID card health status looks VERY promising that I got good drives on the MEGA-cheap! :D Extremely happy!

1 out of 5 eggs90 days is too risky!!!

Pros: This is a great drive if you buy it new with the 5 year warranty.

Cons: Way too risky with just a 90 day warranty. When you can buy it for less brand new with a 5 year warranty through an office supply company. Stay away from refurbished most aren't worth the risk. If they are refurbished well they would give you a better warranty.

4 out of 5 eggsNo raid needed

Pros: 1TB storage ( actually 931gb total). Scored 104 MB/s avg on HD Tune Pro where as my WD3200AAKS HDD only scored 53MB/s avg. It "seems" to be a bit quicker than my WD320gb. Win 7 performance rated it at 5.9 ( WD 320gb was 5.6).

Cons: When I first installed it it was "clicking" rather loudly but within appx 1 hour of use it became quieter. Now I cannot hear it so not really a con anymore.

Other Thoughts: The burst rate on read was 186 MB/s, access time 12.2 ms avg, maximum read score was 135.5 MB/s and minimum read score was 72.4 MB/s as per HD Tune Pro. Processor in PC during testing was Q6600 @ 3.0ghz, I thought I would pass that on since I could not find any information of that type on Google. Also this HDD works just fine with 1ea installed so if you see an article implying that this type of HDD has to be in raid know that it is a false statement. Granted it is designed for a raided configuration but not a requirement for functionality on a personal desktop environment.
