5 out of 5 eggsWorks as intended.

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I've owned this HDD for more than one year now and have not had any problems. If you are on the market for a good 1TB, you've found it.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsLonger term review

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive has solid reliability and is whisper quiet. No surprises with 2.5" dimensions, everything is standard. Good speeds for a 5400 RPM drive. Runs relativity cool.

Cons: Still a 5400 RPM platter drive. Would not be a first choice as a boot drive.

Other Thoughts: I tested this in a Gateway Core2Duo laptop to start. It performed on par with other drives. I liked how quiet it was, no head movement sound and only a slight whirl when spun up. It also remained very cool.

Since this is marketed as an "AV" drive I then put it in my home server and tasked it with two duties. First I ran a nightly drive image backup of my main rig's 128 SSD. I also put several movies and songs and had no issues at all steaming the HD content to several devices. Again, the 5400RPM did not hurt the drive for this intended purpose. This is perfect for a HTPC or DVR setup due to it's quiet operation and low power consumption.

This has been in constant operation for over 6 months and I would totally recommend it but the price needs to be looked at. If you can pick this up for under $75 I would say go for it. After months of constant use it remains solid and very quiet.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable and quiet

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Being a 5400 RPM drive, this is both quiet and produces less vibrations. There's a noticeable difference between this drive and the stock drive in my laptop in terms of noise and heat. This drive sips power, and was easily run off of USB 2.0 external enclosures without external power.

Cons: Being a 5400 RPM drive, the read and write speeds are lower than some comparable 7200 RPM drives, but the capacity and lower temperatures more than make up for this.

Other Thoughts: Over USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0, the average read/write speeds were around 66.5MB/s and the burst rate was around 123.0 MB/s. This drive bottoms out around 40 MB/s transfer rate, so the reads are at least consistent.

I've had this running in an older laptop that I use as a terminal server. The system hasn't had any hiccups yet, and the drive is a major improvement. This won't blow you away when compared to an SSD or higher RPM drive, but it gets the job done at a reasonable price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive works great. I had a old 8 camera security system at my work, and to fully test this drive I put the harddrive into the computer as a secondary drive for video storage. This computer is running 24/7 and records almost all the time. And so far it has worked better than the old 500GB 7200RPM SATA I WD drive that was in there.

I know some people will disagree with me on this but, Ive always loved the 5400RPM drives when it comes to long term use of a drive. They last longer, produce less heat, allow for better air flow in tight cases, and tons more. Sure they are slower but im not looking for speed when it comes to a security AV drive. a good 60-70% of the data on that drive isn't accessed until it is over written with newer more recent data.

I also love the fact that this drive comes with a 3 year warranty on parts and labor. Most drive like this only come with 1-2 years at most. I'm really glad that they have those warranties because it gives the customer a nice feeling know that this drive will probably last 3 years or more without have any problems.

Good job WD I like this drive alot and I am very happy with how it is working right now in my security computer.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Small form factor (space saver), light, fairly inexpensive, made by a well known company. Pretty large capacity for data storage. Ideal for my playstation, logic board does not have any components that can easily break off.

Cons: Not an ssd, quite slow read and write speeds

Other Thoughts: When I got this drive I was pretty amazed at how light and small it was. It is about the size of and ssd and packs 500 GB of space for storage.

ATTO peak write speed: 49 MB/S
ATTO peak read speed: 93 MB/S

Although the drives speed is not that great it does remain rather cool and because it is so small you can pop it easily into a enclosure, your pocket, gaming console, DVR, surveillance system, HTPC or a laptop.
I had to initialize the disk once I installed it in mine and it has been working fine ever since.

5 out of 5 eggsSlow but Reliable !!! Good for DVR's

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 16MB Cache, 2.5" Size, 500GB

Cons: 5400 RPM, Sata 3.0GB/s and not 6.0GB/s

Other Thoughts: Knowing the rpm for this drive and the medium size cache it has its still a reliable drive. I first put it in my notebook to see how it would work out and though it seems to be steady it is for sure a noticeable difference in the seek, read, and write department as compared to a 7200 rpm with 64MB cache. That being said my main reason for this was to put it into a security system for video surveilance. After putting it into my security system DVR and setting up a 4 camera system it seems to work very well for that purpose. My system comes with auto detection and an app for my android phone so that the only time the recording is done is when a motion detector senses movement within the area i have designated, once it starts recording it automatically sends a signal to my android phone with a message saying security system has been activated, i can then click my android app for a live feed from my security system to my android and in real time i can see what has set off the motion sensor, and view live video. As far as the results this hard drive seems to work very well for this purpose which is what its designed for, the recording and playback of video on this drive is very clear and seems to have no lag at all. When i go home to see what video has been recorded and play back its crystal clear with no lines, blurs, or skipping in the video. For video surveilance this drive is a very good purchase, reliable, and runs cool and quiet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little upgrade

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 1. Extremely quiet
2. Runs cool
3. Plug and Play

Cons: 1. 5400 RPM (But with this form factor...)

Other Thoughts: I used this drive to upgrade my wife's little Compaq laptop (She got it before we met... She would have been informed otherwise)
I removed the stock Fujitsu and cloned it to the Western Digital drive, it was smooth and had no problems formatting.
She was estatic to see her previous space of 100 GB move up to 500!

I did some benchmarking tests to kinda get an idea of what it was running at and i got these:

Read:
33.56 MBPS
Single IOPS 115
Mulit IOPS 113

Write:
28.77 MBPS
Single IOPS 314
Multi IOPS 283

Over all we saw a speed improvement and the 16mb cache definitely made a difference with mutli application.

Over all I'm very pleased with most all of Western Digital products and the AV-25 WD5000BUCT is no exception, I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone looking for a 2.5 hard drive and at a great price!

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a good drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: *500GB of storage
*1,000,000 hour MTBF
*"24/7" Reliability
*avg read:72.00MB/s
*avg write:69.4MB/s
*3 year warranty
*Silent Operation
*Great Company

I like this drive. It's not as fast as my other 5400RPM drives, and not as fast as a 7200RPM drive, and doesn't even touch either of my SSDs. But what this drive lacks it makes up in reliability. This drive has double the lifetime rating as almost every other drive in its class plus a 3 year warranty instead of two. On top of that, it is specifically designed to be run 24/7 since it is aimed at AV monitoring systems. I'm guessing most people won't be using this drive for that purpose, so it will last a very long time since it is not going to be on all the time. Also designed to be cool and quiet (I don't hear a peep out of this thing and its mounted externally in a 2.5 hot swap bay). It also stays very cool, temps consistently at 28C during intensive write transfers, and around 25C idle. Definitely a good thing when installed in a laptop, heat = bad.

The continuous speed rates are not all that fast (see other notes for specs) when compared to two other WD green 3.5" 1TB drives. HOWEVER, the burst rate on this drive BLOWS almost every other drive I have out of the water. 162.1MB/s on the fastest and 140MB/s on the slowest. My SSDs fastest was 120MB/s. They must have used some seriously good memory for the cache on here.

In real life (doing actual file transfers) the speeds are fairly consistent with a 5400RPM drive. On a 20GB transfer (of multiple files) I saw speeds hovering around 25-30MB/s. Real life write to the SSD of the same files from this drive gave me speeds around 45MB/s.

Cons: *Slow speeds compared to other drives
*Just as expensive as other drives

This drive is pretty slow. Shouldn't be your first pick if it's going to be a boot drive. You'll want to have a speedy drive for that. Considering the WD Black drive is only $5 more same GB plus a 5 year warranty and much better speeds, it almost doesn't make sense to buy this drive. Take a look below at the comparison specs I posted between this drive, a WD Green 7200RPM, and WD 500GB 5400RPM 2.5" drive. (no write stats on the other drives because the application I use requires the drive to have no partitions i.e. no data)

It all depends on what you want I suppose, for me the "guaranteed reliability" isn't a big enough plus to warrant the drive being almost as expensive as a WD Black.

I didn't knock any eggs because this drive is built for reliability and not necessarily speed. WD backs it with a 3 year warranty (which is very good for a HD) and states that it will last 1 million hours (the equivalent of running 24/7 for 114 years....). I have had to return a WD drive under warranty, and they make it absolutely painless (as opposed to other companies.... ahemm Seagate)

5 out of 5 eggsworks as expected

This review is from: Western Digital WD AV-25 WD5000BUCT 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Dependable hard drive
simply plug and play install
great upgrade to older laptop

Cons: 5400RPM is a bit slow for today's standards but that's not really a large enough con to take egg off, you know what your buying.

Other Thoughts: Simple 2.5" laptop hard drive was easy to install and produced expected performance. Reads/Write speeds were right around 50 to 80Mb/s which was pretty typical. It worked right away, didn't emit very much heat, and made zero audible noise.

This is a great upgrade if you own an older laptop and need more storage. If you currently have a newer laptop with a 7200RPM hard drive already installed in your laptop this hard drive will probably be slower, however the added capacity is nice.

Another alternative would be to upgrade the stock PS3 hard drive to this one, as its performance would be similar if not slightly faster and it would severely increase your capacity as game and media storage consistently demand more GBs'
