3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: we have purchased this drive for a while, from time to time at least one drive is DOA, various problems even can't see it first time plug in. very disappointed with WESTERN DIGITAL!!! as they are MANUFACTURE REFURBISHED!!!. FORTUNETELY, newegg supports them very nice, always replace or credit, this is why we still buy this from newegg. we buy them because newegg is GOOD, not the WESTERN DIGITAL.

5 out of 5 eggsSecond Round Ok

Pros: Inexpensive, fast

Cons: First one I received spun up but wasn't recognized by the MB. Newegg took care of me, and got another one that worked fine.

Other Thoughts: This drive has been running for about 8 months with no problems. I have this refurbished drive in a previous build that's been running for a couple of years with no problems. Both systems see light usage - no gaming.

Other Thoughts: If you are like me and you just like to having extra hard drives laying around or if you are looking to scrape together an uber budget build solution, then getting one of these is not a bad idea. I have this HD running with:

1 out of 5 eggsSpun up but wouldn't format

Pros: None

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: I took a chance on a refurbished drive since I wasn't going to store anything important on this one. I think that prejudice was confirmed when this one arrived DOA - I would definitely never use one of these drives for important data.

The hard drive spun up and was recognized by the OS, but it would fail with generic messages when partitioning and formatting it. The shipping cost to send it back to newegg was nearly half of what I paid for the drive. Unfortunately no refunds, so hopefully the manufacturer actually bothered testing the next one I get.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your product. All Western Digital products are tested and determined to meet WDs stringent quality standards before they are shipped to our retailers. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties.

4 out of 5 eggsits a gamble - is it worth it for you ?

Pros: decent size for boot drive, speed decent, 16mb cache... great option to replace aging computers boot drive.

Cons: re-certified = gamble... you just never know if it was the previous owner issue, or a previous mechanical issue... we all know there isn't a lot of certifying happening... for the price point it was worth it for me.

Other Thoughts: i gambled on one of these, and unfortunately i lost. the drive was slow and when tested failed read/write. After about 2 weeks i came home to a non-booting computer. i bought a replacement drive, and NewEgg as always stood behind the bad one. Word of advice get the extended warranty (i did).

2nd note: since this was loaded with all my info once removed from the computer i wiped the drive with a 4 pass DOD standard. not sure if the added air flow of it not being in a case did it, but the drive had no problems being written to or being formatted. the sectors i couldn't read previously were once again readable... maybe i just did the re-certifying for the next guy, maybe the HDD's S.M.A.R.T remapped the bad sectors to a new location. i didn't check, and I wasn't going to gamble on this same drive again.
