Pros: usb port

4 out of 5 eggsWDTV

Pros: Very small, low foot print, low power consumption, zero noise and next to zero heat. Easy to configure and connect to network shares for media playback. Also has a massive amount of built in codecs for video playback off many types including direct from .ISO files.

Cons: Claims to work with PlexMeidaServer as a PlexPlayer by connecting to DLNA servers. It does not.

Other Thoughts: For the money I spent on this little device, this is fantastic. I do recomend this to anyone who has a file server on their network (Linux, Apple, MS, NAS, etc...) and wants a simple, easy to use HD media player for their family to enjoy.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: -Has an awesome remote app available for download
-Does everything I need for it to do, but see cons

Cons: -Loads external drive files REALLY slow and slows down the entire unit while doing it.
-Makes USB connectors get pretty warm.

-1 egg for these two things.

Other Thoughts: It's a bit cheaper than the Roku 3 and does the same things. My family and I decided to stop paying for cable last month and needed something to allow us to keep watching some of our favorite shows and movies. This thing did just the trick.

1 out of 5 eggsWD Live Junk

Pros: Plays many formats

Cons: 1. No button to switch from full to wide screen. You need to do this in the menu for each movie
2. Automatically, randomly deleted moves off my HD when connected through network and directly plugged into the WD tv live box.
3. USB ports died after a couple uses
Called WD. They said they have heard of this happening and will send me a new one. They said they will need my cc incase I don't return the old one they will charge me for it. Next day I see over $100 taken out by them, this is not what they said would happen. Called and explained how they never said they were going to take the funds out, "Sorry it's our policy". I asked to speak to a supervisor. They said they would check on it and call me back in 24 hours to tell me if they could refund me sooner. I have small bank charges from over drawing in my checking now. I still haven't received a call back from them. They assume you are going to steal the broken product so they automatically charge you

5 out of 5 eggsWD TV Media Player

Pros: Great box for the price. So far working with all my external drives and all app's turn on quickly. I would have to say it is easy to use and find it faster the other boxes I used.

Cons: Little slow pulling up external drive software running movies, but it does well for the most part. Could use a boat load more of external app's for an user to have. I would pay for some if they offered them.

Other Thoughts: Need to add more programs for the user. The Slingbox is nice, but there is a better way.

2 out of 5 eggsNot an improvement

Pros: Nice looking interface. Plays many types of files. Many apps like netflix and so on.

Cons: Not an improvement over my previous gen wdtvs in terms of file compatibility. The same files I had not working on a first gen unit wouldn't work on this either despite an apparent bump in the system's processor power. The interface is also just as laggy as the older unit despite the new look. After playing around with it, I decided to update the firmware over the net and once it finished, it no longer recognized my hard drive. It works fine in my older wdtv as well as all my pcs but not this unit. Sent it back for rma.

Other Thoughts: I guess if you really want serious media capability, it's better to just make an htpc than to fool with these boxes. This seems better if all you want it for is the internet apps but dont bother with local files.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsBig disappointment

Pros: Great on paper (advertised specs)

Cons: Either choppy sound or sound totally absent.
Unstable video: sometimes stutters; other times it freezes and crashes.
Painfully slow loading and changing screens.
A DISH network sling adapter hooked to USB port never initialized.
I also connected a Hauppauge 950 USB tuner, but it was frustrating to use and to try to get the WD player start automatically from it.
All despite having started with the latest firmware, being WIRED at Gigabit speed & having 12.5/1.5 Uverse. I ended up returning it for a refund.

Other Thoughts: I would have loved for it to have worked correctly. My hope was to use it for streaming the over-the-air live tv brought in by the Hauppauge USB tv tuner to all the computers /tablets in the house and maybe even away from home throught the internet. Too bad that could not happen...

4 out of 5 eggsPlays everything

Pros: I love that it plays every file type I've tried.
The set up and connections are as simple as it gets.

Cons: A bit slow on processing. Larger HD files tend to buffer more than they should even over a wired connection.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend it. I can't speak much for or against the online services as I don't usually use them on the media player.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Great media player for movies on an external drive. Even wifi streaming HD from a WiFi device is smooth. Plays all types of files and works with smartphone remotes. Got it for my parents and works perfect for them.

Cons: No 5.1 surround and you need to supply your own HDMI cable. Not a deal breaker for my purposes and not noticeable on most setups that would benefit from a $70 device.

2 out of 5 eggsIFFY - moody device

Pros: Its a great idea..you get Hulu Plus, Netflicks and a all around file media player for your jpg, mk4, avi, etc. so you have it all mosting in one box, however it is glitchy....Mine didnt work without these periodic flashes of white on my screen, it would drop audio periodically during streaming and playing files, didnt want to recognize my seagate USB 2.0/3.0 external HD , would only recognize my segate and WD USB 2.0 only external HD's as storage media, I would need to unplug and turn back on to stop the flashes of these random white bars...I compared to my ROKU2 box just to make sure it wasnt my network...but Roku worked sliky smooth on the HULU streaming in an A to B comparison. I have a older viewsonic media player and was looking for an all in one type of device...for streaming Hulu and play all my files. This was supposed to be the best of both worlds but just didnt cut it.....going to do an RMA today. Nice try WD but missed the mark.

Cons: too glitchy , and drops audio randomly...ROKU has a much better consistancy for streaming.
