1 out of 5 eggsHigh Failure Rate

Pros: Cheap. $1 per 3GB's of space.

Cons: Had 4 of these drives for my PC over the last year. 1 was DOA, returned it got a replacement and it died after 5 months. Bought another 2 for a different computer and both are slowing down. I keep my hardware properly cooled and maintained with hard drive cooling units on each hard drive and great ventalation. These drives are a peice of junk and have a very high failure rate.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for. This is a cheap drive, with a high failure rate and short life span.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value, but beware heat

Pros: Inexpensive. Return policy was painless.

Cons: These drives generate a lot of heat and have little tolerance for it. I've had several issues with them failing temporarily, and one died completely (as noted above Maxtor replaced it without issue).

Other Thoughts: You will need to put some thought into managing heat with these drives, especially if they're installed as part of a RAID or in a system that runs hotter then normal.

2 out of 5 eggsGOOD WHILE IT LASTED

Pros: For the price at the time, a very good value. Easy install with no problems

Cons: Only lasted about 4 months before it died.

Other Thoughts: The hard drive in my other computer is the same one it came with back in 1997 and I have never had any problems with it, so thats what I am comparing this one too. In comparison, this Maxtor drive failed big time. 4 months as opposed to 9 years. I am in the process of calling Maxtor and see what they can do. I do not expect much since its OEM and I did not pay for any type of extended warrenty. Oh well...easy come, easy go I guess. It worked great while it lasted.

3 out of 5 eggsShakey so far...

Pros: Good price per GB value.

Cons: o Can't use nVidia nForce4 SATA drivers with this drive (you'll get random BSODs in Windows). Not too big a deal though, since you can use the standard Windows drivers and the drive works like a champ. You'll get the same throughput (as shown in Sandra 2007), using either driver and the Windows drivers don't crash your machine. There's a firmware update available for the drive that supposedly fixes the crashes when using an nForce4 controller, for those of you that must use the nVidia drivers.

o Possible reliability issues (see my other thoughts below and read some other peoples comments about dead drives).

Other Thoughts: I have two of these drives (retail boxed, not the OEM version). One has gone bad within 30 days of use. It would go offline on its own, and I started getting data corruption. Maxtor support was great and I got a quick RMA# and a new drive is on the way.

I'm a little worried about the second drive going bad. Keep an eye on your using the PowerMax diagnostic program. I wouldn't recommend running the advanced test unless the program tells you that you should (it takes hours and hours to run on this 300GB bad boy).

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome for a RAID

Pros: These are great for a raid setup, just plug them in and bam, 300 extra gigs. I have three hooked up, one for games, movie, music. Works great, no noise at all, tend to run a little hot when all three are close to the motherboard. Best if you plan to use for a raid to buy a big case and maybe a new rack.

Cons: Just make sure you dont put it to close to any other hard disks because the heat can get really bad.

1 out of 5 eggsThese suck!

Pros: None

Cons: I ordered 3, 1 of them was physically broken.

The other 2 died within a week.

Sent them back got a refund, order another 2 to replace them, one of them is now reporting as not being there.

Sending ALL 3 back now for a refund and getting some WX

5 out of 5 eggsWOW!

Pros: Very good Hard drive for the price. Worked right out of the "box" (bubble rap - hence: OEM) I had an extra ATA-150 cable lying around so it wasn't a big deal. Immediately recognized by my Intel D915GAG motherboard. Very nice and Very Fast hard drive for the price. Upgraded from 200gig HDD to this 300gig HDD and I couldn't be happier. Windows was EASY to install and had no troubles along the way. MAXTOR ROCKS!

Cons: None yet. Everything is working fine right now.

Other Thoughts: Shipping was fast! Thanks Newegg! I'll be buying a lot more soon. Hard Drive works great on my system:
Gateway 507GR
300Gig HDD (just upgraded from 200)
3.0Ghz processer HT
1.5 gigs of ram
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: ZERO

Cons: Peice of Junk. First one I got was broken out of the box. Second one would not work on my MB "MB DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultr NF4" or on a "MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM NFORCE3 ULTRA"
