The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 120 GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 8 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle both data-intensive applications and high-end multimedia applications. It offers average latency of 4.2 ms with an average seek time of only 8.9ms; and average write time of 10.9ms, resulting in both greater efficiency and safer data transfer
This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection and repair. Its mechanism ensures automatic discovery, isolation, and repair of problems which may develop in a hard drive.
Despite a remarkable data transfer rate, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs whileworking, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off.

- Pros: This drive worked great up until about 2 years, then it died.
- Cons: The warranty, maybe. I'm still awaiting judgement on this one, hence my 3 score. I bought this 5/2/03, and with the "3 yr warranty" expected it to be warrantied until 5/2/06. Imagine my dismay when I went to RMA this through WD and was told my warranty expired on 11/28/05. We'll see what happens, but if I don't get the same warranty as what was advertised, no more WD for me.
- Other Thoughts: NewEgg, as always, rocks.
No Real Warranty on WD Drives.
- Pros: cheap, but you get what you pay for.
- Cons: You know what you get when you request an in-warranty replacement? A refurbished drive. Yup, you pay for a NEW one, and if it's defective during their in-warranty service time, they will ONLY give you a refurbished unit with an unknown history and no detail on WHAT was refurbished. That sounds like NO warranty in my book.
Mine started clicking 6 months after I bought it, so I requested an RMA replacement. They never mention "refurbished" on their website or on the phone when you're researching the RMA process, they just refer to it as a replacement drive. I'm sure it's detailed in the fine print of the actual warranty, but who reads those; we all assume they have a reasonable replacement policy if it's needed.
I sent back the RMA unit once I realized it was refurbished (look on the bar code sticker, it will say recertified) and will simply wait for this one to die. I'll never buy another WD now that I realize that they don't stand behind their product.

- Pros: hd is a good drive.
- Cons: trying to get order straight was a nightmare.
not so reliable
- Pros: 1 out of 2 still lives but am changing brands.
- Cons: died and only had about 2 gigs on it
- Other Thoughts: suggest different brand
4 Years
- Pros: Worked just fine for 4 years.
- Cons: Died after 4 years....
- Other Thoughts: I have used perhaps 20 IDE hard drives over the past 10 years and out of those, 5 western digital drives have failed, 1 Mxxxor, 0 Sxxxate. Others were removed in working order for various reasons (storage space). Have had a mix of drives the whole time.
Guess I am now sold on Sxxxate Barracuda for IDE and SATA drives.

COOL Cool operation results in the highest reliability, even in intensely hot environments such as digital video recorders. That's why these, the coolest on the market, are the drives of choice for the world's leading consumer electronics and PC manufacturers. QUIET The technology that Tom's Hardware Guide called "very fast and nearly silent" is used throughout this family of drives. Our WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to levels near the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms, resulting in more efficient operation. |
