The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 80 GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 8 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle both data-intensive applications and high-end multimedia applications. It offers average latency of 4.2 ms with an average seek time of only 8.9ms, and an average write time of 10.9ms, resulting in both greater efficiency and safer data transfer.
This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection and repair. Its mechanism ensures automatic discovery, isolation, and repair of problems which may develop in a hard drive.
Despite a remarkable data transfer rate, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off.

Still a great buy
- Pros: Outstanding. I bought two of these over a year ago and was thinking of building a computer with other parts I've replaced and was glad to find these are still available. The drives are fast, reliable, and quiet. 80GB should be enough for the average user (my wife has Windows 2000 and Office in under 7GB). The 8MB cache speeds up things like virus scans and defragmentations. And it's very quiet.
- Cons: None at all.
- Other Thoughts: Although hard drive technology is changing, unless you have a need for a huge amount of storage a Parallel ATA (PATA) will do the job, and perform just as well as the newer drives. For the price this is an amazing piece of technology, and Newegg's service is the icing on the cake.
A late review
- Pros: A year and a half later still runs like new. silent quick great!
- Cons: Not as fast as my sata II
- Other Thoughts: Its a late review. Its my first WD and what can I say? My next HD will be a WD. Western Digital rocks just like new egg. Note: I put this drive in an old PC and yes it still works awsome. Its on 24/7 all year.

90 Day Wonder
- Pros: Worked for three months.
- Cons: Only worked for three months.
- Other Thoughts: Now makes a clicking/grinding/beeping noise and doesn't work! Was used under very average conditions, room temp., a few hours a day.
BEWARE
- Pros: So far its still working-occasional
hd hits on "system Mechanic".
- Cons: Beware-when I installed this,it ALREADY had 2 partitions on the drive and NOT by me. WD.com said this is not normal on a NEW drive. I could have been sent a USED HD. Newegg said although it shipped just in bubblewrap,no box,no instructions,no Cd or diskette-it was new. Caution, just my experience.
Good Basic Drive
- Pros: Western Digital name, quality and reliability. 3 year warranty says Western Digital stands behind their products. Have deployed many of these drives over the years, these drives have been faithful workhorses.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: This is the 43rd WD drive in over 9 years I have installed in my systems or client's systems... not one failure yet. Western Digital is my drive of choice.
