5 out of 5 eggsstill alive

Pros: I have owned a pair of these since 2006 and they are still alive and kicking! I do not use them in my primary computer now, as they are pretty out dated and small compared to my needs, but they work well enough!

Cons: I set these up in a RAID 0 once upon a time and that raid crashed so I lost all of my data but the drives themselves formatted and became like new.

Other Thoughts: don't run a raid 0 unless you don't care about problems with any data missing, perhaps a 1+0 if you are really wanting performance, but RAID 5 is better

5 out of 5 eggsEasy setup for me, works great

Pros: Quiet, still pretty fast even when stacked against more recent drives.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is my second drive, the first was purchased 1-2 years ago. I'll raid them as soon as I can offload data from the first drive.

4 out of 5 eggsJumper problem also

Pros: I have bought a lot of Maxtor drives and usually had no problems with them. I use them in RAID arays a lot and they are fast and quiet. This was the first time I ran into this problem with the jumpers.

Cons: I thought this drive was defective at first. It would not spin up at all, appeared to be DOA and I was going to ask for an RMA. That means I have to pay to ship it back though. So just to make sure I tried removing the jumper and it spun up Ok. I am still running tests on it just to make sure. Rather than completly removeing the jumper switch it over to the other 2 pins. Probably where it should have been to begin with.

Other Thoughts: Hope this doesn't cause Maxtor a lot trouble and cost. They should jump on it right away and at least issue a notice to change the jumpers to the correct position.

4 out of 5 eggsSETUP DIFFICULT

Pros: Maxtor drives are excellent drives. Stable and dependable.

Cons: The setup for this drive was extremely difficult. The OEM drive shipped with a default jumper setting and the drive did not work until I removed the jumper. I could not find any information on Maxtor's website and found the solution in another Newegg customer review.

4 out of 5 eggsHard drive setup

Pros: Lot of storage for the $$$

Cons: Setup is not straight forward.

Other Thoughts: I downloaded the drive manual from Maxtor and it displays a 3 pin jumper layout and says not to screw with it. The actual drive has a 4 pin configuration. My ASUS P4P8X/XPMCE did not recognize the drive after installation. I had to remove the factory installed jumper, before it was recognized. When you see New Hardware Detected, right click My Computer then Manage then Disk Management. An XP wizard will pop up and initialize the drive. Next right click and format the drive. Done

1 out of 5 eggsDead out-of-box

Pros: I've owned about 5 or 6 Maxtor's over a period of about 10 years, and never had a problem until now.

Cons: This one was dead out-of-the-box. And it took a long time to troubleshoot the issue, too.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps I'll steer clear of Maxtor drives in the near future....especially since they're no longer in the business of making HDD's.

5 out of 5 eggsRulze!

Pros: Everything nice (except SATAII, and who needs it). Lasts a long time - we have 4 of these in no special configuration in our server, which has all our movies / music / everything on it. They've survived great for almost a year now.

Cons: None! I didn't put them in RAID 1, and I'm a little worried about one of the drives crashing - but they're solid so far, and I'm getting less worried about that as time goes by!

Other Thoughts: When I bought these, they yielded the most GB per dollar. Now you want to go 300 - 350 GB if you need storage and SATA ports aren't an issue. HD space is freakin' cheap!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks good...

Pros: Fast drive for the $$$

Cons: Non-Industry standard factory jumper config. gives illusion of bad or DOA drive.

Other Thoughts: For most applications, especially intel chipset use, remove the jumper as it will prevent the bios from correctly identifying your HDD

5 out of 5 eggsGreat! Inexpensive!

Pros: Great deal for 16mb cache and 250gb. Other than having some issues with jumpers (aparently, the jumper setting they are shipped with wouldn't work?). The drive came up at a Maxtor SABRE in my BIOS unit I ended up removing the jumpers completely and all went well, even though the people at Maxtor tech support told me the only reason it would do that is that it is a bad drive. I heard some Maxtor drives are incompatible with nForce4, but these are running stable with no issues on my Abit KN8. I put them in a RAID0 array and installed WinXP right away, all went well. These drives have been put through 30+ hours of 400+kb/s torrent downloading (I lost all of my data on my other hdd, had to redownload EVERYTHING) and still run stable, no issues.

Cons: None, other than Maxtor's sxxxxy tech support.

Other Thoughts: People say these drives are loud, but I don't think so. I have two of them in my case and can't hear them over my fans. The thing is, my fans are extremely loud so I can't really tell.
