2 out of 5 eggsOne Backup ... then bad sectors

Pros: Great price. Memory card reader is a bonus. Firewire and USB

Cons: Bum drive. I received one of the bad drives out of the litter. Backed up once and after that the scheduled backup was erroring out. Can read the drive and see the backup and other files ... but can't save files to the drive as it gives a Cyclic Redundancy Check error. Checked the drive using WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics and it reports "Too many bad sectors detected !"

Other Thoughts: The whole lot can't be great ... someone has to get the problem hardware. Time to return the defective product for a replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsFast Storage

Pros: Shuts off and on as you need to use the drive. Fast write speed with firewire and formatted to NTFS. Have not bothered to try out USB connection.

Cons: Power supply cable and firewire cable not too flexible for the rear connections. Have not used media slots yet as I have no need for them.

Other Thoughts: Software not that great but may need CD for WD bridge control drivers. If you need backup software, use A----s it is the best.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's OK

Pros: Works as advertised. Expected a little faster from WD but still a nice drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Storage HD

Pros: This hard drive is perfect for what I use it for. I do lots of high end Video and audio work, and I bought this drive to throw projects on to free up space on my main hard drives. I also have 10GB of audio files on this hard drive, and its plenty fast enough to mix directly off the drive. I find it really helpful that it does not turn on with my pc, If it did it would wear out much sooner, shutting down when I don't need it keeps it cool and running smoothly. It's even recorded tv shows without any problems. Just don't try to edit DV off this drive as it can hardly play a dv file directly. If your doing video work a WD raptor is a much better choice for that. through an odd stroke of luck and Newegg's stupidness mixed with its kindness, I got this drive for less than 3 digits, WITH a 100 pack of dvd's. So it was a great deal. But I was planning on buying this drive anyway. If your on the fence about it, go for it, its very reliable and runs smooth. Its great for storage.

Cons: Read time is too slow. Formatting into NTFS took a long time but was not really a problem. those who whine about this are just lazy, its pretty easy to do. NTFS boosted the speed of the drive from 40 minutes for a 15GB file to only 20.

Other Thoughts: I haven't used the memory card reader, I've got one in my PC already, so I don't care if that fails or not. I only use western Digital hard drives because I've had terrible luck with all of the other companies out there, never had one WD drive fail on me. One of my WD hard drives is 10 years old. While it is only 6GB Its actually still getting used in a cheap backup pc, which is pretty amazing. I don't care about usb, I bought it for firewire 400.

1 out of 5 eggsOpen the box Crush the software CD and it will be OK

Pros: 250 Gig Hard drive for a Buck Ten when the internal version is a Buck Fifty!

Cons: Open the box and take the software disc and BREAK in two so you will not be tempted to load it on your machine as I did. Do not load it for any reason! If you make the fatal error of installing the software there is no clear way to remove it without doing a little registry work in the safe mode. (You had better be a decent hack because the software does not appear in the Add Remove and is not easily identified by WD in the registry) The software basically runs a scan in the background every time you boot. Your system will appear locked up but it is scanning just look at the pretty glow of the HD light if you want proof. If you have any storage on your base machine (2 70 Raptors running in a striped RAID for the OS and a 250 gig SATA for storage while working on files) it will scan in depth your drives for approximately ½ hour rendering your machine useless. It then will release the processor to actually get work done. Another note is the card reader will not function when using Fire W

Other Thoughts: Remember to break the supplied CD in two to prevent accidental installation of the software

4 out of 5 eggsGood backup drive solution

Pros: Installed easily and operates as advertised. Really like the USB 2.0 port on the front as well as the card reader functions. Was able to back up my entire computer which allowed me to upgrade my computer and not worry about losing my old data. Still had 150 GB's of space remaining. Love that.

Cons: Doesn't seem to recognize my 2GB or 4 GB SD cards although does recognize my 1 GB and less SD cards. Not happy about this and unable to find any upgrade software/drivers fix this. I simply have to plug in my portable card USB card reader into the USB port in front though and now my larger SD cards can be read.
It can be just a tad loud. Don't like having to turn the drive power button on each time I boot up my computer though.

Other Thoughts: Overall--I'm very pleased with this purchase and as usual--NewEgg continues to do things so very well.

4 out of 5 eggsA decent choice

Pros: Fast, mainstream name brand, convenient integrated card reader, convenient front USB port, USB & Firewire connections, security cable connection, quiet

Cons: Cheap plastic housing

Other Thoughts: I've had good luck with Western Digital over the years so I bought this despite other, higher capacity options out there for the same price. It's a decent piece of hardware, although the cheap plastic housing bugs me. That's not a deal breaker though.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Representative Of WD Quality

Pros: Decent price for a 250GB external hard drive.

Cons: First drive was very "whiny". One day I heard a loud "pop", and it gave up the ghost. It stopped powering up, and I had to RMA it through WD's website. Total time of operation was 5 months.

Other Thoughts: WD's RMA process is painless, and they sent me a drive that is nearly silent. Same model of drive, mind you, but this one seems much better in build quality.

4 out of 5 eggsFAT formatting

Pros: People disappointed about drives being shipped with FAT formatting should bear in mind that this product and similar ones are meant for computer users (which includes the Macintosh platform and 16 bit Windows) not 2000/XP users exclusively. FAT32 is a format that can be used 'out of the box' by almost anyone - NTFS is not. I can easily move this drive between my OS X machine (using the higher performance firewire interface) interface and my vanilla XP box using USB2.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Drive powers down when not in active use to prevent overheating (no case fan). Seems to be an effective solution to prevent premature disc loss. Other [cheap] cases I've had do not do this and I've lost drives as a result.
