The Western Digital Scorpio 80GB (WD800VE) hard drive delivers best-in-class performance with lower power needs when compared to other notebook drives. You'll get the quietest 2.5-inch drive on the market with real-time data protection technology to care for your records, games and pictures. This compact drive, with an 8MB cache buffer, rotates at a speed of 5400 RPM, but with a power curve of a 4200RPM drive. Its average seek time is only 12ms and average latency is 5.5ms

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate of up to 100MB/sec, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off. This is a full-featured drive in a tiny package, and a great offering from Western Digital!

  • newegg Ultra ATA 100 (ATA-6) Interface The Ultra ATA 100 interface provides up to 100 MB/s throughput for fast data transfer.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Scorpio drives to achieve industry-leading shock protection specs.

1 out of 5 eggsDont Buy Western Digital

Pros: Easy Install

Cons: The quality of Western Digital products has decreased to a point where you are a fool to trust them. In the last 5 years I have had too many fail. I am switching over to Seagate. They used to have a 3 year warranty and stood behind their product. Now, even if you have a product in warranty period they claim your out of warranty.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This drive really makes XP boot in half the time, very quiet and opens applications faster.

Cons: Really Great drive..

Other Thoughts: You need a diagnostics disc to start the drive, luckly I had a Western Digital Hard drive that I bought 3 months ago for my desktops PC that came with a CD that I used on this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSoup up your laptop!

Pros: Easy installation, great price, super fast and quiet. Another great product from Western Digital.

Cons: None as of yet.

Other Thoughts: I would have spent $250- $300 on a factory replacement hard drive for my HP laptop. This drive was twice the capacity and a step up in speed for only $xx! This drive is quieter than the original and runs faster and cooler. Thanks Newegg!

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Was a nice drive while it lasted. Fast enough and quiet enough for my purposes, I was pleased.

Cons: Now quickly dying (bad sectors) after ~1 year of gentle use. I don't move my laptop around much, it's on my desk maybe 80% of the time, but this thing is going downhill fast anyway.

Other Thoughts: Call me crazy, but a 1 year product lifetime is unacceptable. I'll be using other brands from now on.

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb

Pros: Quietest hard drive I've ever used.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This replaced the original Toshiba drive in my Powerbook G4 12", which recently died a painful death. I had thought that drive was quiet, but I was uncompressing a huge file to this drive, and even with my ear up to the laptop at the corner where the drive is, I couldn't hear a thing. Very impressive. Also, the Mac boots up much quicker now.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: I have had this unit long enough to write a review based on daily usage over a couple months time. Good drive on par with others of the same spec. It replaces a Hitachi drive of same size and spec. Much quieter and lower temps compared to the Hitachi, but speed seems equal.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have had 2 Hitachi drives of the same spec die in 3 years. I have always been a WD guy, so we will see if it lasts longer than the Hitachi drives installed by the factory in this computer.
