1 out of 5 eggsI can see why it is discontinued

Pros: When it works it's OK

Cons: Failed after a couple of years
Boneheaded choice of Type A USB connector on drive requiring an A to A cable, not often used

Other Thoughts: Can be noisy if on hard surface
Web interface that provide is cumbersome and slow

1 out of 5 eggsRun like the wind from this...

Pros: It didn't spring to life and physically attack the server.

Cons: This product is horrible. The interface sucks. There is no option to power up automatically after a power outage. It continues to show disk errors even after calls to maxtor and getting a green light from it's internal diagnostics. Just buy lottery tickets with your money. You'd have better odds of protecting your data.

Other Thoughts: Run! Run like the wind!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Buy

Pros: I have to say I disagree with the other responses on here. Windows XP average throughput with 240GB nightly backup using Cat6 = 13.6 MB/s (108 mbps) and using Windows Vista or Windows 7 64bit = 23 MB/s (184 mbps) which is faster than any desktop user NAS on the market I have encountered. Wireless throughput on all operating systems using Wireless N through Cisco N+ router is no higher than 13 MB/s.

Cons: Management Console is Poorly Coded. Drive does get hot.

Other Thoughts: For me personally, there has nothing that has performed faster on my home network up until this point. I am highly satisfied with the product.

1 out of 5 eggs...S...L...O...W...

Pros: This field intentionally left blank.

Cons: Slow everything.

Management console is terribly slow.

Moving data from an attached USB drive to the internal drive is slow...I have this old 40 Meg WesternDigital from 1990 - it's just a bit faster than the Maxtor.

Other Thoughts: For something that comes with a gigabit network connection, you'd expect it to actually work fairly quickly.

I've reached speeds up to 6 megabits. Wow.

The only fast thing about this was the retail transaction from my bank account at a local box store.

Seriously - save your money and buy something more useful.

Just buy a 1TB external drive and share it on the network.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad - at the right price.

Pros: Great storage capacity
Nice monolithic styling
Built-in upnp

Cons: Transfers can be slow
Bundled software is terrible
Can be noisy
Built in management console is slow

Other Thoughts: I personally don't care about having two USB ports as I only use the one for a printer. I've been using Maxtor drives for years and haven't had any issues with them, with the exception of one early drive made shortly after the Quantum days. I havent suffered any data loss with this drive yet, though I've been mirroring some folders to my local HD. I managed to score this locally for much cheaper than online, otherwise I probably would have found a cheaper solution.

4 out of 5 eggsNice form-factor NAS

Pros: Having owned the previous avatar Maxtor-fusion NAS that was built like a truck and concomitantly occupied real-estate like a McMansion, I really appreciate the Central Axis' sleek form-factor. It's also very quiet unlike it's predecessor. The client and web-interfaces are both much improved. This product appears useable and ready for release unlike the Fusion version.

Cons: Wish there were a bittorent client to deploy on this NAS. If anyone has pointers on whether this can be accomplished on this unit, please post.

4 out of 5 eggsUPDATE THE SOFTWARE BEFORE USING!!!

Pros: Gigabit LAN, remote access (not necessarily through Seagate, see Other Thoughts), 1TB of storage for a reasonable price, nice external case, USB port for expanding storage if necessary, print server built in using USB port, included Maxtor drive manager is not needed for anything at all.

Cons: Additional drive using USB port must be formatted in FAT32, which is horrendous if you have large files (over 4GB). Shipping software is the buggiest version for any drive Maxtor or Seagate has ever released.

Other Thoughts: First off, do not under any circumstance put files on the drive if the software version is 3.4 (you can see the version number in web access at the bottom right). The drive resets itself on every power cycle, which I found out the hard way. Seagate's support site put out an updated software version which has been rock solid since installing a couple months ago, so make sure the first thing you do is install version 3.5 from their site.

You can try to set up Web Access through Seagate's site, and if it works for you then go for it. However, it never worked for me so I did things differently. NAS shares can be accessed remotely by setting up a virtual server (or port forwarding) on your router. I set up a high port (in the 1000's) to forward to the NAS on port 445 (SMB share port). Make sure to give the NAS a static IP, then you can access it remotely by using "Connect to Server" in Mac OS X (SMB://YourPublicIP:ForwardedPortNumber).

I hoped that helped clear up some confusion!

1 out of 5 eggsCentral Slowness

Pros: Cost/storage and energy savings vs running a WinShare machine.

Cons: Slow, when it stays connected
Print share intermittent and disconnects if your running a movie at the same time.
It took 24 Hours to load data to drive on a Gb network
Advertised 2 USB - only 1
External drive FORMAT is non-standard so the they are no longer movable to another machine (portable)
Menu and management is slow and convoluted. Not intuitive.
Sharing and privilege system (menu) difficult to track.
Does NOT auto on with power strip activation. A feature I use so all associated hardware goes on/off with one switch. (green)

Other Thoughts: Going back to a Windows Shared machine. Faster, easier, updatability. Asking for a refund, which cost me $38 + shipping!

4 out of 5 eggsIt does what it's suppose to

Pros: Network unit
Plenty of space
Fast compare to others.

Cons: No fan
Better internet sharing files

Other Thoughts: This drive works fine for the price and features.
USB port refers at the version 2.0 and 1.1 not the number of ports it has.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad...

Pros: Months ago I bought a WD TB server and was very disappointed in the speed. This transfers just over 10% of my gigabit network connected by a hub but that's leaps and bounds better than the 4mb the WD gave!
It hooks up to the network and it's 'easy' to get the PS3 to read. I did have to give my router uPnP to get this to work. I didn't think I needed that to get sharing with WM11.

Cons: Transfers seem to slow down substantially when streaming media to the PS3 and copying new media to the server, but the PS3 doesn't skip during the copy.
Tricky to get some media shared. It seems to not like the public folders.
You have to tell the server to find new media before it shows up in the PS3, but the discovery period is very quick.
Little published support from manufacturer on how to get it to work on PS3.

Other Thoughts: Software interface seems slightly limited in options and features but it is geared to a 'typical' home user.
It allows backups and a connected USB drive. I can't wait to try to add onto the TB server with another USB device!
I'm not sure how to put playlists to stream.
