4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to "Don't use in older Dells"

Pros: I just wanted to update my previous post. I emailed Hitachi about the problem I had changing the UDMA with their Feature Tool. They told me to upgrade to Feature Tool version 2.11. I had been using version 2.1. The newer Feature Tool allowed me to change the UDMA to ATA100(ATA5). Therefore you can use these drives in older PCs. Just be sure to run the latest version of the Feature Tool first.

Cons: You have run the Feature Tool and lower the UDMA before you can use it in older PCs that have hard drive controllers that run at ATA100.

3 out of 5 eggsDon't use in older Dells

Pros: Fast drive. Good price

Cons: This drive will not work in older Dell PCs. I'm a computer technician and I tried to use these drives in a Dell Dimension 4400 and also in a Dell Dimension 4500. The problem is these drives run at UDMA ATA6(ATA133) and many older PCs such as these Dells have hard drive controllers that only go up to ATA5(ATA100). The hard drive controlller can't reliably transfer data at ATA6 speeds and the drive will not automatically drop down to ATA5. The result is BSODs and other problems. Hitachi has a "Feature Tool" that is supposed to change the UDMA to ATA5, but the "Feature Tool" will not change the UDMA on this drive. I tried to change it on three different computers. Apparently this drive is not supported for changing UDMA in spite of the fact that Hitachi's website says it is. So, avoid this drive if you are upgrading an older PC.

Other Thoughts: Hitachi and Newegg really should disclose the UDMA problem. I have not had this problem with other brands of ATA6(ATA133) drives. I keep a few hard drives on hand for repairs and upgrades in my business. I will not be stocking any Hitachi drives any longer. I wasted a lot of time on this problem.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well with Dos

Pros: Great Drive so far, low noise, low heat, good spead on a Dos system. I replaced a 10 year old drive with this one and my customer noticed a considerable difference.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I did not need to configure anything for this drive in Dos, just emulated it and plugged it in.

5 out of 5 eggsGood old drive

Pros: Very reliable, just about the lowest price hard drive these days

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: We have four of these, all over four years old, all over 16,000 hours and never a problem.

1 out of 5 eggsWhat a Piece of Junk

Pros: none

Cons: What a piece of junk... right out of the box this does not work and is broken. You would think they would test it prior to sending it out.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA, get a western digi

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Received this unit and it was DOA. Still waiting for the next one, which I pray has no issues. This is not the first time.

Other Thoughts: I bought this hard drive to replace an IBM deskstar that had failed on me after about 5 years of service. Figures this thing would suck.

5 out of 5 eggsRaid 1 - Nice

Pros: I have two of these drive in hardware RAID 1. I also have all of the data Truecrypted, so that the financial data stored on them is protected from physical removal from the facility. The average read and write speed is up there with some of the newer models, and larger drives that were in there also.

Cons: none
