5 out of 5 eggsGood hard drive

Pros: The hard drive is fast and has plenty of space. It reads and writes quickly. After 3 weeks of daily gaming use, its shown no problems.

Cons: My only complaint about the hard drive is it's loud, louder than I was expecting. It's no big deal unless you're trying to build a super quiet PC. I can't hear the noise with headphones on at medium volume. I just thought I'd mention that's its louder than other 7200 RPM hard drives I've come across, although its not the loudest.

Other Thoughts: Not much to say about hard drives. Either they work, or are dead on arrival. This one showed up working perfectly.

4 out of 5 eggs33% DOA Rate

Pros: Relatively quiet, cool and fast. Enterprise class HDD at a fair price.

Cons: Bought 3 for a NAS. One drive blew reallocated sector counts through the roof almost immediately and started freezing. RMAed as DOA. Writes on good HDDs can be slightly noisy, but still sane.

Other Thoughts: OEM HDDs could be packed far better. One sheet of bubble wrap, with corners exposed, in a box of nuts, is not enough. I am getting a 33-50% DOA rate on HDDs bought here from all makes. I don't fault the HDDs.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality Drive

Pros: Server quality drive with good capacity. Relatively quiet. Five year warranty.

Cons: Not as fast as the WD 750. Also, generally more expensive than other 750 gig drives. (750 gig drive = 699 gigs.)

Other Thoughts: My primary reason for buying this drive over other, faster drives is due to the durabilty claims of this manufacturer. I have had problems with HDDs failing, particularly troublesome are operating system drive failures. I paid a premium for a more durable - server quality - drive and hopefully it will be of benefit in the long run.

3 out of 5 eggsThe Egg rules

Pros: had High hopes

Cons: lock up issues while writing to the drive.

newegg came through for me.

Other Thoughts: nothing to do with its "default sata jumper setting"
purchased a different drive from newegg and waiting for its arrival.

all drives can't be all good. had a bad one, ohwell.

4 out of 5 eggsHow to Fix SATA bios problem

Pros: This is a fine drive. Quiet fast and huge. I am writing to help people AVOID PROBLEMS installing this drive. This OEM drive ships (of course) with no info.

Cons: Didn't ship with 1.5 Gbits/sec as default (SATA I), so created big problems trying to install on older motherboard (ASUS A7V600X, or any with VIA VT6420 (VT8237)chipset. Except for Hitachi, most SATA II drives have physical jumpers for setting this option. Hitachi drives use a software interface to make this setting. See other thoughts for fix.

Other Thoughts: The assumption was that Hitachi would make this drive backwards compatible by default (ie. shipped), but alas, no. After much head bashing and wondering if the drive was bad, a search showed me this solution: Download the "Feature Tool" software from the Hitachi website and make a boot floppy or boot CD. Find a newer computer that likely has a bios that recognizes SATA II drives, plug in the drive, and boot from the floppy, run the program, change to SATA I. You're done. Go install and have fun.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 5 year warranty on the ultrastar line. This is there enterprise driven series of hard drives. Using diskmark sequential read tests were 83Mb/s, write was 76 Mb/s. I bought the drive simply for storage, but it would make a great OS drive.

Cons: Idle the drive is very quiet, seeks are a little loud but nothing to terrible.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a superb drive. The price may be a little higher than the desktar line but you are getting 5 year warranty and a enterprise oriented drive.
