4 out of 5 eggsCame preinstalled in a laptop

Pros: I didn't directly buy this as it came preinstalled in my laptop.

This failed this week after 4 years in service. 4 years for a HDD seems about par but I've had HDs that have lasted much longer.

When it worked, the performance and power consumption were acceptable.

Cons: Like all HDDs it eventually fails, but I'm not satisfied with its lifetime.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: One star above awful only for Newegg's return/replacement policy.

Cons: Drive came DOA, S.M.A.R.T. failures in post, cyclic redundancy check errors in the OS. Unless you call Newegg about the return, they will try and charge you $10 for the privilege of returning a defective product, so make sure you call customer support if this happens to you.

Other Thoughts: If I were the only one who this happened to then maybe id say it was a fluke. Hopefully the replacement drive will be fault-free... too bad I have to wait an extra week to get the replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsStill strong

Pros: This hard drive is still going. I have had this stock in my toshiba laptop, and it has been giving me very decent speeds for 10 months now.

Cons: Not SATA 3.

Other Thoughts: For the price, it may be a little too expensive, but once it goes on sale or drops down in price, i'd totally recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect PS3 Drive

Pros: I purchased this drive because I had a 60GB in my first gen PS3 and had less than 3GB left. Game installation times are the same as the stock drive. Drive was packaged very well.

Cons: None at all

Other Thoughts: For those who are unaware it is recommended if not necessary that you install a 5400 RPM drive like this one in your PS3 to avoid adding additional heat to your console. If you desire faster read/write times on your PS3 you will need to install a solid state drive.

2 out of 5 eggsNot a Fan

Pros: Great first year. Needed an upgrade for my 2007 Macbook Pro model. Was awesome at first.

Cons: The thing is just becoming unresponsive. I have had to enter the Startup Utility to properly repair the drive about once every month. It's still running, but it's very lethargic and doesn't open/process programs pretty well. Could be the computer in general or maybe just the drive getting old, but even a 5400 shouldn't be going this slow.

Other Thoughts: I got my three years' use out of it.

1 out of 5 eggsWeird interaction with OS X SMS

Pros: Quiet, fast.

Hitachi's RMA process is quick and painless.

Cons: Drive has a weird interaction with Mac OS X's Sudden Motion Sensor which parks the heads if it detects a sudden acceleration. The slightest tap (i.e., typing) near the hard drive (on a Macbook) causes an audible click. I checked the actual values from the accelerometers, and they weren't large. I ended up having to disable the OS X SMS. I've heard that OS X's SMS can conflict with a hard drive with it's own built-in accelerometers, but there's nothing in the documentation for this drive that indicates it that it has this functionality.

Also, I'm on my third since this drive has failed twice in a year and a half.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's the best part of My laptop.

Pros: I bought My laptop in May 2010, It is a Gateway NV5378u, and the hard Drive got a WIE of 7.1, now nearly a year and a half later, It still works fine and gets speeds around 100 MB/s. My windows boot time also is around 10-25 seconds.

Cons: No cons concerning the HDD

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Hard Drive

Pros: Bought this Drive on 9/30/2009.
Its still running strong, no issues.
Currently running inside of a Thinkpad T61, Ubuntu 9.10.
I do plan on replacing it with 750GB HDD.

Cons: None, that I know of.

Other Thoughts: for those still fearful of the 'deathstar' drives, no need to worry, Hitachi has learned their lesson.
