5 out of 5 eggsI love these drives - but read on

Pros: I love them and I can't have enough of them, have upgraded all my externals of different size and age with these. 320GB is plenty of portable storage. I had some 20s and 40s and it made a big difference, no longer have to worry about large video files filling it up in a jiffy. You can't beat the price, and for this money it is worth fixing the power issue...

Cons: Of course I have to fix the power issue on all of them with a jumper wire...

None of the ones I purchased here will power on as designed. All they do is click, clicked y click... until fixed that is.

Other Thoughts: Without a remedy for the power problem don't even think about it. If you want to purchase it, search newegg for: 5v power adapter. ie: N82E16812270002 costs 5.99 and will save you from pulling your hair out. You can also get: USB to Type Barrel 5V DC Power Cable but make sure you get the right size for the drive (these little barrel connectors are of different sizes...)

Or if you are solder handy, fix a jumper wire and be done...

1 out of 5 eggsDOA due to manufactor

Pros: Good price, sleek design, Hitachi namebrand

Cons: DOA due to failure to supply power supply if you wanna use this thing you better have 2 free spot and might not work even then.

Other Thoughts: I just wrote to Hitachi and explained my problem hopefully the will mail me either a usb to round or a wall to round power adapter until then its no use to me.

5 out of 5 eggsFixed mine to run on Single USB

Pros: Fixed mine to work on Single USB connector, it even works with my laptop. I still love the case and will buy some more of these drives, especially since I know how to remedy the Power problem.

The +5V power feedback protection circuit is a noble idea, however it causes more pain that it does any good.

Cons: Had to fix the power issue or else, use it with an external power supply. It would not spin up even with two USB plugged in.

Its internal circuit to separate the +5V lines (from external PS & from USB) causes sufficient power loss on the USB line, to Power Starve the drive on start-up.

(The round power connector feeds the +5V straight to the drive.)

Other Thoughts: Fix a jumper wire from USB 5V line to the connector that is there for external power supply (to the center pin that is for +5V). Or get a USB cable that has one connector for data and another small tubular for power. Cable with a plug like this does not invalidate warranty and causes no harm to neither the PC and the Drive.

Actually you are better of this way rather then under-powering the drive and causing excessive spin-ups.

Such cables (Flat USB to Round +5V) are available at most computer stores, or perhaps at newegg.com...

This unthoughtful design delivers full power to the Hard Drive from the round power connector, but the power from USB +5V is severely limited by the feedback preventing circuit.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Attractive case. Feels solid. Drive works fine when sufficient power supplied.

Cons: Drive does not spin up when attached to USB ports that support other 2.5 inch USB drives, even when both USB plugs are connected. I was able to get it to spin up with one plug attached to PC and other attached to powered USB hub. I have several other 2.5 inch external drives. This one appears to require more power.

5 out of 5 eggsAdditional info to help

Pros: Additional info to help:

The drive will make clicking sound trying to Power Up / spin up the platters. Then due to insufficient power it will reset it self and make another attempt to spin up. You will hear it as clicking sound, similar to the Click of Death.

Cons: This sound will make you think it is a dead drive, but in reality all it needs is more Power to start-up.

(Of course this is no excuse for Simple Tech bad engineering... they should pay for or send a free power supply with this drive to everyone who bought it.)

Other Thoughts: There is nothing wrong with the drive (well there is, it is bad engineering I mentioned below...)

Get your self a 5V 1A power supply or a USB2 hub with Power supply to remedy the problem. Or look elsewhere for external drive, although I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 eggsCute but power hungry

Pros: I gave it 5 stars because it is so cute and I love it, of course it works good as a storage drive too.

NOTE: it will not work on any of My PCs with USB power alone, it works with a dedicated 5V/1A wall wart I had few laying around.

Cons: Will not power on, even with both USB connectors plugged in.

Hello, Hitachi... what happened to your electrical engineers? Are you sure they passed the college tests and not cheated they way out?

Other Thoughts: Get your self a USB 2 powered Hub to solve the power issues, they come with 2.5A power supplies. But it defeats the low cost of the drive...

Each USB port provides 5V, 0.5A but during start-up the drive sucks over 1 Amp of current. Even two ports can not provide that or will experience excessive voltage drop preventing the drive from spinning up.

Make your choice before buying it, you have been warned.

5 out of 5 eggsJust What I Wanted

Pros: This drive was exactly what I needed to be able to move files around, and to store things which I didn't need on an internal drive. The price was exactly what I was looking for.

Cons: The only thing I can think of is that the shape of the enclosure can be a bit odd to set down securely, but this is such a small issue, especially for the price.

Other Thoughts: As usual, the product arrived from NewEgg very quickly.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, not great

Pros: Easy to format. Nice design. Sleek device. Fast Transfers.

Cons: I have purchased about 6 of these now and have noticed that shut off after being inactive. If you do not use it for a period of time (1 or 2 hours), the drive acts as if it is unplugged and then plugged back in.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this to people just because it is so affordable. For databases and constant running sources, this is a great drive. For editing, or web design, I would steer clear.

3 out of 5 eggsdecent drive, but some flaws

Pros: a nice form factor that allows the unit to be placed flat on a desk and still get some air flow underneath. very good price for what it is.

Cons: i did some research, and it seems that this drive draws more than the 0.5A current to write than your standard USB jack supplies. this is why they supply the strange double usb cable, it needs 2 jacks to give it the needed current. kind of a nasty design flaw, but if you pair it with a 5V 1.0A DC supply you won't have any issues.

Other Thoughts: Annoying if you are traveling and want to power this unit through a single USB on your laptop, but haven't had any problems otherwise. Kudos to Hitachi for following up on the product reviews, try and make better selections for your 3rd party MIR handlers :)
