Customer Reviews of the HGST HD32000 IDK/7K (0S00164)
Pros: Good price at the time. Comes with SATA cable.
Cons: Read errors began occurring after about a year. The drive also causes the system to crash when it goes into sleep/power saving mode and I hear a single loud click noise from the drive when it happens. I can't even boot up since the drive would no longer be recognized and I would have to plug the SATA cable into a different port every time that happens. Even when going into sleep mode properly, it takes forever to wake up.

Rating: 3/5Half life < 6 months?
Pros: 2 TB Storage Fast Easy setup Great warranty and replacement
Cons: THEY DIE!!! I bought two of these, set up RAID to mirror them. The #1 died after 4.5 months and was quickly replaced by #3 (#2 was still chugging along, keeping my data safe). #3 then died then died 10 months later. During the 3 weeks when I was without the second drive, #2 died and I lost all my data.
Other Thoughts: I bought these knowing that the aptly nicknamed "Death Stars" are high-risk drives that are good bargains for the price. Thought I was mostly safe using mirrored RAID. I still think this okay to use but you better have stuff triply backed up, and at that point, you don't save any money when you have to buy so many of these drives. The warranty and replacement is great, but so far I have had drives die at 4.5 months, 10 months, and 15 month timepoints, which really speaks terribly to using them for any time at all past the warranty expiration.

Rating: 5/5Minor bump in the road
Pros: Reliable durable 2TB great for backups for all my computers
Cons: Not really a con, but I did have a scare the other day, after 18 months of use. I put it on my backup computer that I am turning into a server. After a scarey 30min install the AHCI BIOS locked up on reboot to error 23. I switched ports and still error 23. I called Hitachi for replacement thinking it finally went out on me.
Tech support told me to try USB mode and it found it just fine. After some tweaking and not having it work I decided to put it back in USB mode and use diskpart to reset the drive and violla! works like a champ once again.
Other Thoughts: I have this thing in my ThermalTake BlacX docking station and it get's switched out all the time and carried around to everyone's house for backups and what not. It's been dropped a few times and still runs strong.
For those wanting to know how to reset a drive just run diskpart.
Hit the windows start button and diskpart and select diskpart.exe A DOS type window will pop-up.
Then type list disk and locate your disk and take note of the number on the far left column.
Type select disk 1 (replace the number 1, with the drive # of your disk that was listed on the above step.
Type clean and in less than a second it should finish. It may take longer for you as my drive was empty.
I then plugged it into my SATA port and it cleared the BIOS bootup check and is working wonderfully once again.
also, ignore bad posts on all 1TB or bigger. Everyone's having issues and you just buy the one with the longest warranty. It seems hit or miss and so far I have been lucky for

Rating: 5/5No DOAs!
Pros: Inexpensive, cheap, fast, retail packaging
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: All five passed stress test with flying colors. I believe the retail packaging led to a better in-transit experience for the drives.

Rating: 5/5So far so good...
Pros: I'm a freelance photographer and desktop support rep at a major fortune 500 company...I did a ton of research as well as speaking with my server team about which drives to buy. While researching, I discovered that all brands / drives have a certain amount of failure rate or have the possibility of being DOA. It's just the way it goes, no matter what brand you're looking at. Luckily for me, this wasn't the case with these drives. I ordered two of them, the drives were in original boxes (Which was nice to see) and not loose with just a static bag. NewEgg packaged it well on top of that and it arrived as promised in three days. I slid the drives in my Drobo and configured with no issues. I've seen reviews that they are noisy...but I don't find them to be noisy at all. Quite the opposite, they're quiet, fast, and seem to run cool so far. I'm hoping for longevity...that will be the true test, but so far they're great and I'm quite pleased with them.
Cons: None so far...if I had to be nitpicky, the $20 mail-rebate (Per drive) was nice in terms of cost savings, but mail-in's are always a bit of a pain...instant rebate would have been easier, but really not that big of a deal.
Other Thoughts: I highly recommend these drives so far. NewEgg executed the transaction perfectly and the drives are an incredible value. After rebates...I will have paid $240 for 4 Terabytes of storage. How can you beat that? Pretty amazing...assuming they last. Time will tell...so far, so good.

Rating: 5/5great product
Pros: inexpensive; fast for the price; not too noisy
Cons: none.
Other Thoughts: put two of these in a Drobo storage array connected to an i5 iMac via Firewire 800. getting fantastic performance - better than any other external drive i've used. had to format the drives for OSX (HFS+) but that was virtually automatic and took seconds.

Pros: Cheap
Cons: Dead on arrival
Other Thoughts: There was no damage of package. Poor quality. I had to spend $10 to ship it back. Not a good policy for this kind of return. It should be free.

Rating: 2/5decent drive but very difficult to format
Pros: Good value for large capacity drive
Cons: Speed test well short of 3Gb/s. Nightmore to install and format with no assistance from HitachiGHT, who makes it even more difficult to find any info on it by identifying the drive model as "Deskstar 7K2000" rather than "Deskstar 32000IDK/7K." Tried to format through Windows XP MCE SP3 three times but it would stop formatting after about 6 hours when about 90% complete but would give no meaningful error message. Apparently this is a known, common problem that HitachiHTC completely ignores and provides no assistance with. After considerable intenrnet research, I learned that I needed to update my SATA drivers (but not through Windows!). The latest drivers from Foxconn for my MB did not solve the problem but latest chipset drivers from nVidia did solve the problem. Once that was fixed, upon the recommendation of someone with the same HD and same problem, I tried the freeware utility Easeus Partition Master and it formatted the HD in mere seconds and now it seems to be working great.
Other Thoughts: If I had known that HitachiHTC provided no meaningful installation/formatting instructions or any support on their website even acknowledging this known issue, I would have gone with another brand. I could have done just as well with an OEM drive rather than this poor excuse for a retail box product.
