5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: I used this drive externally installing it in an external case for storage purposes (movies, television series etc.) Drive comes up when pluged into usb within 5-10 seconds and transfers data fairly fast. Really pleased with drive. Of course you never geta full terabyte or full Gigabyte of any drive these days. I wish they would manufacture a terabyte @ 1.2 or something and sell em as 1 terabytes so that when you plug them in it actually shows 1 terabyte (what your bought). Thats an old complaint of mine not likely to be rectified any time soon. I understand some space is set aside for sytem but comeon .. storage drives or slaves should not.

Cons: none to speak of

Other Thoughts: wish I bought two ... good price at the time

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive

Pros: Cool and quiet. Have 2. Worked well for RAID 1.

Cons: 1. I take away 1 star because of bad Newegg packaging. Both HDD set only on top of couple layers of flatten brown paper. HDD could fly freely inside the shipping box. If these HDD did not have good retail packaging from manufacturer, they definitely would be DOA, which is the most common complaint from other Newegg users. Newegg, you can do better and avoid lots of DOA complaints. 2. Newegg increased price when I want to reorder.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat cheap drive

Pros: This is my second drive. I exclusively use this with a dock for backups and mass storage. The other one sits in my computer holding all of my Steam games :) and has given me no problems. I would buy another one if I needed it, in a heartbeat.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great Cheap drives. As with any hard drive, make sure you back up unrecoverable things (pictures, home video, etc.) somewhere else.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: RAID capable drive, quiet, low price, great bang for the buck! I bought 3 of these as part of a new server (all components bought on Newegg) for my home network. These 3 drives are set up in RAID 5 as the storage volume in my server. I've had no issues with these drives and am considering buying more for other builds.

Cons: SATA II vs SATA III... if that can even be considered a con at this point.

Realistically, no cons whatsoever. These drives just work as advertised.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a low priced storage drive, look no further. Buy this drive! The price and quality can't be beat.

4 out of 5 eggsAs expected!

Pros: Works as advertised, got all the space, no performance problems.

Cons: None come to mind.

Other Thoughts: It's a hard drive- short of model-specific bad I/O times and unit-specific catastrophic failure, not much that can go wrong- or right- before the 2 or 3 year mark. Was a good buy.

1 out of 5 eggsMultiple early failures

Pros: Low cost. Rebates honored.

Cons: Unreliabe.

Other Thoughts: These drives seem to have design and/or production quality problems. 3 out of 5 failed within 3 months. Look elsewhere. Spend a little more and get a reliable drive.

2 out of 5 eggsJust don't make them to last

Pros: Worked good for 8 months 5 days

Cons: Windows 7 gave me a 2 day advance warning to get my files off. When S.M.A.R.T. stopped on this drive, That was it, I did get most of my files off. I've seen hard drives last 10 years This is what I get for trying different brands. From now on I'll stick with what I have the best luck with W.D.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat...For about a week

Pros: Ran good out of the box. I was able to load it, get all the updates and add software the day that I installed it.

Cons: Lasted about 4 days, then started crashing, resetting and got the "Blue Screen of Death". It started with Flash Player crashing then migrated to other sites and applications. PC would start up, run for a while, get the B.S.O.D. and then reset to the log in screen running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Other Thoughts: Many problems with the HDD's coming out of Japan lately. Not sure why. Already arranged for RMA and will exchange it for a more reliable brand. Newegg's customer service is firs rate and I have been designing and building PC's with them for over 2 years now. Never had a problem with their parts that I bought from them until this. Beware of HDD's coming from Japan. This is the second one that I have seen crash/fail in a month. The first one was from a top name leading brand laptop. Japanese hard drives have lost their quality over the past 2 years and I will not buy them for ANY customer that I design and build a PC for from here on out. Like the other reviews I have read, this truly is the "Death Star". Don't waste your time or money on this piece of junk!

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than I expected

Pros: It was recognized by my Bios in my Foxconn A9DA-S motherboard. Everything installed with no problems. {WEI 5.9} which is expected I guess. It has performed flawlessly with Windows XP Pro SR3, Windows 7 64bit, and Ubuntu partitioned.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: It's worth it. Buy it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth Every Penny.

Pros: Low noise output, plenty of storage space, so far a reliable drive even for use as the main OS Hard Drive.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: For those with the SATA 6/Gbps connection go with the appropriate drive since that will make a difference, but for those stuck with the older tech (SATA I and SATA II) this will be a good drop-in replacement for most other hard drives.

4 out of 5 eggsHigh Pitched Noise

Pros: Great Price
Greate amount of storage

Cons: High pitched noise when the HD is working. Not all the time but gets annoying. Hoping this is by design and not a failing drive, because I have only had this HD for just over a month.

1 out of 5 eggsDEADSTAR-- Not Hitachi norm

Pros: Price. Especially in retail packaging.
Runs cooler than WD.

Cons: Died in >3 months. Very low considering its on time--maybe 60 hours total.
NOT Hitachi past quality.

Other Thoughts: Well, you get what you pay for, I guess. I bought this in mid-March, but left in in the box until June when I installed it as a supplemental and back up drive. BAD MOVE!
It is the only drive that failed.
It drve me nuts for two days. The drive has a low beep every two seconds even hough it is spinning, etc. The sound is typical of memory or graphics failure so that is where I looked, pulled, tested, etc.
Unfortunately, I put data on this drive that was no where else. Yeh, stupid. But I specify and buy Hitachi ALL the time in my laptops. I have never had a failure in hotter situations. (My case is running at 90-deg F so this is nuts.)

Sure, the warranty is there but so is the hassle and cost. I was going to get a matching drive and mirror raid. Don't know now--pretty scarey.

There is one small chip on its board that is hot. If they would fix it at board level so I could recover, it would not be so bad. I know that's not going to happen.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, Missing Sata Cable

Pros: I bought this as a combo with an Antec 900 case and a 650 w PSU.

Great Hard drive. 7200 RPM for around 70 bucks when I got it. Runs fast and is a big step up from my 500 HD.

Cons: My box didn't come with an SATA cable. That's the only reason why I took off one star. It says on the box that it included an SATA cable but it was no where to be found. Not sure what happened there.

I'm not sure this is a con but when I installed this into my computer and ran Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit, the hard drive rate a 5.9. Everything else rated at a 6.9 or higher. Not sure if this is the Hard drive of because I may have set up the cables wrong but thought I would mention it.

Other Thoughts: I got this on sale but I think I would buy a few more if I had the cash. It is a great hard drive. No complaints.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought two of these drives, and they are very fast. I have no programs to strictly benchmark them, but from a 'feel' point of view, Windows XP loads super fast compared to the WD 400s I had in there before, or the 1TB drive I have in another machine.

Cons: Both drives are fairly loud. Not like castanets being shaken next to your head loud, but there is VERY audible clicking when the drive heads move, to the degree I had to turn my music up a bit. When not reading or writing though, the drives spin quietly.

Other Thoughts: First, but not last, time using this brand of Hitachi hard drives. I was a pure WD guy before now, but I'm happy to have my notions of brand loyalty ousted.

Pros: It sure was cheap.

Cons: Installed in Windows 7 just as backup drive. Thought the combo pack SATA dock I bought at same time was causing BSoD, turns out its this hard drive.

Left unhooked for 3 days no blue screen. Hook back up, bazinga, blue screen after a few hours. Will be returning this.

Other Thoughts: Have a 500GB DeathStar already and have had no problems over 2 years with it. Hopefully this is just bad luck.

Pros: They are great HDs, they work right out of the box, they come with thier own sata cable, and they run fast, and 1tb is pretty huge.

Cons: umm 4 of these took up alot of space in my case? is that a con?

Other Thoughts: I got 5 of these running raid 10 with hot swapable. Works great i like these HDs

4 out of 5 eggsGood Hard Drive

Pros: I have always purchased WD hard drives. This is the first Hitachi hard drive I have ever tried. I have not had a single problem with the drive since I started using it. It is not noisey or slow , or glichey, or super fast, or any thing unusal really.

Cons: I hate the way manufactures lable a product so many gigs or 1 TB, and then when you get and start to format the drive it says it is less than a TB drive. This unit read out to 931 GB not 1 TB as advertised. I know all the manufactures do it, but if I wanted to buy a 931 GB hard drive I would buy one. That is a difference of 69 GB. I would not say anything if it was a GIG or two but 69 GIG is too much. This is an exceptable practise in the industry, but I still think it is basically wrong, and was the only reason I did not give a higher rating.

Other Thoughts: I have this unit in a Thermaltake hard drive docking station externally hooked up to my computer, so I can back up sensitive stuff and not worry about losing it if my computer crashes. Because of this I physically touch the hard drive from time to time to swap out with another drive. Even when heavily used this hard drive does not get hot like some others I have used.

Pros: While it lasted, it ran beautifully.

Cons: The drive died after four months of regular use. Can't even run a drive test on it... and likely am unable to RMA with Hitachi because I do not have their "test codes" to place in the RMA request form. I now have an $80 paperweight!

5 out of 5 eggsIt is what it is...???

Pros: It holds lots of data...

Can't really comment on performance since I'm only using it for storage but I'm sure it would score 5.8 or 5.9 on the Windows index like my last HDD did. I have my OS installed on an SSD (if you don't have one, get one, best computer related investment I've ever made)

Cons: It's not free??

4 out of 5 eggsHitachi RMA

Pros: I have 3 of these. They are better than the 3 Seagates they replaced. Low noise, good speed, low temp, low price, using in a 3 drive hot swap bay (no raid).

Cons: One died after 3 months. No Warning. Cost $10 to return to Hitachi.

Other Thoughts: RMA with Hitachi, quick turn around, they sent me a 2TB as a replacement. Could have been because of my DeathStar comment. I hadn't used an IBM/Hitachi drive in years because of the DeathStar, but then I started having WD drives fail and switched to Seagate and they started failing also, so I decided to give them a try. The price is hard to beat.

Pros: It's a terabyte drive that is reliable.

Other Thoughts: Mirroring my old harddrive on to this one took forever, but that was transferring 80Gb of data. it should take forever. If you can do a clean reinstall, that's what I'd suggest.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Drives

Pros: Installed a pair of these in a Synology DS209. They're plenty fast and were recognized right away. I ran a through SMART test on both drives and they passed with flying colors. They run cooler than the WD Black drives that they replaced by about 10 degrees.

Cons: Although the drives aren't noisy while just spinning, accessing them is VERY noisy. Reminds me of the old 5.25" drives from the early 90's.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice drives.

Pros: I was hesitant to purchase this drive because of the Deathstar moniker that some reviewers have put on this drive. Personally I have owned many Deskstar and Travelstar drives. I have never had one fail. I know I am very lucky. This drive was as advertised. Retail box and was actually misreported at having 16MB Cache when in reality has 32MB. I had just gotten done with some bad experiences with Seagate internal and external 1 and 1.5 TB drives so this drive was a refreshing change from those. I have since bought a 2nd drive identical to this one to setup as RAID 1 in an NAS box. Recommended.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I got these drives on sale here and am very happy with both I have received.

4 out of 5 eggsGood price.

Pros: Big and cheap. Warranty isn't bad.

Cons: Has some trouble seating properly in my Rosewill SATA dock, but that's likely a fault with the dock rather than with the drive.

4 out of 5 eggsHow to Fix it

Pros: A bargain drive. Best drive in terms of the amount of memory you get for the money spent.

Cons: Deskstar has had bad reputation for its stability since it was with IBM. After its sale to Hitachi, the problem seem to persisted. Google search Deskstar to see its old reputation.

Other Thoughts: I had the same problem initially like few others that the drive started to click very loud, and the only way to temporarily fix it was to physically unplug the SATA cables and replug. Recently, I cleaned my computer chest to make it less dusty, and I placed the drive on the upper space to avoid the dusts that tend to fall on the bottom. It seem to fixed the loud clicking sound and death of the harddrive. It has been problem free for 2 months now. It seems to work. Hope this would help others with the same problem.

Pros: Great price for what you're getting. Decent warranty also.
I have been running windows 7 64bit on this drive for 5 months and haven't run into the slightest problem

Cons: It's a bit loud, although that's probably because of my cheap case.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid Hitachi and Newegg Rebates!!!!

Pros: (It seems) Cheap!! (But actually not, Hitachi didn't honor my rebate)

Cons: This is just a piece of junk. I got my order in June and installed FreeBSD on it. One week later, it went dead. SMART error first and then completely dead. I couldn't return it to Newegg since I cut off the UPC and submitted the rebate form. And now I got an email from Hitachi saying my rebate is not honored because the purchase date is invalid. What!!!! WTH!!

Other Thoughts: Hitachi replaced the dead drive for me. But I could have bought a WD Caviar Black with that money and shipping costs. And, WD would save me lots of time and work. Avoid Hitachi, and avoid Newegg's rebates!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive - runs SUPER COOL

Pros: Runs cool, great drive for me to copy the 500gb of files off of my failing drive.

Cons: None - it's really not that loud...the people saying that must be the type that wear earplugs to go to sleep in.

Other Thoughts: Bought two, one's still in box for when I need it. That said, I hope that newegg keeps these around for this price so I can build a RAID array later on down the road if/when I need one.

Pros: Large and fast, good bargain. Was able to adjust AAM down to 128 quiet the drive for use in my Tivo Series 3. Has performed flawlessly for me since installation.

Cons: AAM is not enabled out of the box, can enable using various hard drive utilities though.

Pros: Cost: pretty cheap
Convenience: fast shipping

Cons: Hardware: spin up time is somewhat slow but honestly I don't mind it

Other Thoughts: I got 2 of these for storage after my 1tb Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 crapped out on me after just 1 month.
I have these drives mirrored for security and for about 6 months now I have not had any problems with them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat storage drives.

Pros: I purchased a pair of these drives last year to augment the storage from my WD Caviar Black drive and I still haven't filled them up quite yet, about 400gb left in fact, and I'm a digital packrat.

Quiet, responsive, and reliable.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I've currently got my system set up with my OS on one drive, games on a second, and page file on a third. One of these drives is for games and the second is for the page file. With my OS drive being the WD Caviar (WD1001FALS) I don't really have a "high quality" drive to compare performance with. Despite this I've no issues with read/write times from these drive either as a holder for my OS' (Windows 7 x64 Ultimate) page file or for gaming. I'm sure better drives would run better, but this one is simply "good enough," especially for the price.

5 out of 5 eggsGet it or quite it

Pros: Well all I can say about this Hard drive is get one if you plan on backing up systems, files etc... or just plan day to day information storing. The dual platter disc inside make for both quite and heat reduction on your system. I switched from Seagate only because I like trying out different products from other companies. Price always plays a factor, and at the going rate Deskstar is the joint. I've only used these two drives in (sata2) interfaces. WD in IDE interface was loud, loud, loud. Haven't tried (sata2) in WD yet.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I need to take this drive through the drop test while the plates inside are still spinning. My last seagate failed after falling from a mid tower usin an external adaptor to power on the drive, the height from the floor; about 18 - 20 inches from the ground on carpet. Never accessed data again.

4 out of 5 eggsOkay So Fair

Pros: Fast drive. Hasn't died yet.

Cons: Bought the drive while it was on sale... Havn't had a problem like past Hitachi drives. I bought the driver for Steam games. You can always reload steam games off the internet so no risk of loosing data. The drive is quite load. I don't usually complain about how loud something is but this drive is dam loud. Even with the 4870 and the 4850 on 100% speed. You can hear this drive. It doesn't bug me that much just saying. I thought it was going to die the first week due to the noise level but so fair everythings well.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Price for 1TB

Pros: Price. Runs cool. Speed seems average. Better than Seagate.

Cons: Bought 2, one died with no warning after 4 months, hard drive monitor showed drive in good health, shows size is 32MB, RMA with Hitachi.

Other Thoughts: I bought these to replace Seagate 7200.11 series drives that are failing with reallocated sectors. Hard Drive monitor was showing Seagate drive's health as low. Both Hitachi drives show great health, no explanation as why one failed. Still a great drive and I'm ordering another one to replace another Seagate drive.

5 out of 5 eggsHitachi HD31000 IDK/7K

Pros: Very quiet compared to my WD RE3 1TB and the WD Black 1TB. The WD drives keep me awake when working at night. This unit comes boxed. Cheap. You don't have to pay a high price to get a good hard drive. Works perfectly and I can hardly hear it.

Cons: None for me. After formatting the drive and before installing any data or OS the last six drives I installed, I ran Windows tools utility. To access, double click my computer, highlight new drive, click properties, click tools, this will check the volume for errors, check now, click auto fix sys errors, click scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors, start. If your drive almost immediatedly goes to phase 5, then you will most likely not experience any problems. This may take 8-10 hours for a USB connection or about 3 hours for a SATA connection. It is well worth your time invested. I have not had a drive fail that I was able to format since using this utility.

Other Thoughts: I will never buy an unboxed drive from Newegg again. Heck even the box this drive came in was smashed. 2/3 of the red portion of the box was 1/4 shorter than the rest of the box. This is the 4th hard drive of this model I purchased in the last year and they all work great.

5 out of 5 eggsWho knew!

Pros: 1TB! Wow, it is like moving into a 10,000sf mansion!

Quiet - Who knew a 1TB, 7200 rpm drive could be this quiet? I work in IT and am around every type of hard drive imaginable. I have never run across one this quiet. I am truly amazed.

Price - As long as I have been in this field of work I am still amazed at how inexpensive some things have gotten. Hard drives being one (memory the other). This was a bargin. Thank you NewEgg!

I am very satisfied with this product and the service I get from NewEgg. I have bought many items over the years (monitors, drives, RAM, USB hubs...) and have always been happy with the price, service and delivery of all the items I have purchased.

Cons: None -

5 out of 5 eggsAlways a good choice

Pros: Fair price. Comparable to the Seagate drives but without all the problems they have. Runs cool for a drive that doesn't claim to be 'green'. It's not easy being green. Not sure what bionic ear implants some people are using but I can't hear this thing spinning or seeking.

Cons: Cons? I knew an ex-con once. Did a dime in Joliet.

Other Thoughts: I own four of these drives. Three of them sit in a server. I have never had an issue with them. And I'm old enough to remember the 'Deathstar' days of Hitachi. Seems all the drive manufacturers are having trouble with infant mortality but, for whatever reason, this particular drive seems to be fairly robust. Every time the Eggsters put them on sale, they sell out.

Pros: none other than the fact that Newegg is always great on their shipping. Fast and well packaged no complaints there.

Cons: "Click" "Click" That's the sound the drive makes now that is dead. Had problems from the start should have know it was going to die. Had to RMA with Hitachi.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great & It's not Hot.

Pros: Seems Fast, Reliable, Quiet, and works great so far.

Cons: None just yet

Other Thoughts: Using this in a Raid 1 setup and runs great so far for my network. I only say "seems fast" because I have it on a gigabit network but am only getting 10 MB/sec. and I've seen many get at least an average of 25 MB/sec, so I'm at a loss there for now; could by my system's HD, which is always the bottleneck in any system and was one of the first SATA drives using an EIDE to SATA bridge; will test with a full SATA drive eventually to see if there's a performance gap.

Pros: One terabye for less than sixty dollars, that's great!

5 out of 5 eggsBest value 1 TB HDD

Pros: I didn't get this from Newegg because at that time (early 2010) the price was cheaper at Fry's. Six months after that the HDD still went strong so I bought another one again from local Fry's.

I was convinced with Hitachi because my first 80Gb HDD in Dell Precision T3400 was Hitachi and it's so silent. I hardly can hear anything. The same goes with this 1TB HDD. It only it made noise when I first migrate 500Gb of datas.
After all installation & migration done, the HDD is so silent.
To all who complaint about the noise, it might has something to do with the case. My Dell Precision T3400's case is so solid & very well designed too. Maybe that's why I don't hear so much noise.
6 months later, I bought 2nd of this HDD as a backup.
Pros:
- Best value cost/Gb as per Jun 2010
- Silent & fast. I noticed the big improvement from my old 80Gb Hitachi 7200rpm/16mb at startup.
- Come with 90° angle SATA cable.

Cons: The HDD is not formatted from manufacture. We have to format it first before the PC can recognize the HDD.
It's not a big deal but maybe for some who don't tinker with their PC that often, they might think the HDD is Dead On Arrival (DOA).
Hitachi should put a little note in the box to warn the customers.

Other Thoughts: If your PC doesn't recognize this new HDD, check this:
- make sure you enable the SATA port where you plug this HDD. Usually you can do this through BIOS setting.
- format the HDD before first use.

4 out of 5 eggsIt gave me an Andrenaline rush...

Pros: *It comes in original boxing so you'll get a free sata cable.
*The docking system is great.
*I got it for 60bucks with a free Rosewill Docking as combo deal. It runs silently and so far it seems good. I'm doing this review only after about 40mins from getting it delivered, so I don't know how it'll be a few days later or a couple hours later.

Cons: *Only 937GB is shown, that is a total about 87GB lost.
*Seems a little flimsy.

Other Thoughts: When I opened my package and loaded the HDD onto the Dock it didn't show on "MY Computer", so I started to panic and tried it on my sis's computer. It didn't work. So I tried it with my other HDD enclosure, fail too. Than I connected it directly onto my computer and it still didn't work, than I figured I had to format it first before it'll be shown on "My Computer". So if you are facing this problem just right click on "computer-which is at the start list" and click manage. A great deal for only 60dollars. I got a package after 2 days from ordering it.

Pros: Fast enough, I didn't have cash for a raptor and needed storage, so for 1TB Drive it performs fairly well.

Cons: Can be noisy. Thankfully my computer is under a desk so some of the sound is blocked. If you're at level with it though and within 10 feet you will hear the HDD when it is reading/writing.

Other Thoughts: Despite the noise sometimes, you get what you pay for. Would buy again.

5 out of 5 eggsRAID Crashes & Burns -- Hitachi to the Rescue

Pros: Solid performance, fast response time, high capacity --excellent value in cost/performance.

Cons: Can't say that I've experienced any problems. Hooked up the HD, loaded Win XP Pro and I was good to go.

Other Thoughts: My Gateway computer came with two 500GB WD drives configured in RAID to act as 1TB drive. Somehow the boot sector got corrupted and Windows XP would not load. So as not to lose data, I purchased the Hitachi Deskstar HD31000 and loaded the OS on it. It has performed flawlessly. I was able to recover my data by transferring it to the Hitachi. I then re-formatted the two RAID drives now using them as back-up. I highly recommend the Hitachi drive.

4 out of 5 eggsseems to be a good choice

Pros: good track record on multiple reviews at various sites. No problems. Not advanced format for WHS. Great price on shell shocker.

Cons: seems to run warmer than my WD green drives.

Other Thoughts: just wanted to get a drive good reviews, was looking at >1TB capacity but most manufactures drive seem to be not as reliable as 1TB or less. Hitachi makes good drive for many years, all drive eventually fail but I was scared of getting a Seagate due to poor reviews, WD never seems to go on good sales and the new change to advance format seems to cause problems with WHS and I didnt want to spend evenings trying to fix this. I popped this drive in, no problems.

1 out of 5 eggsGoing belly up a week into owning it.

Pros: Fast drive.

Cons: 331 bad sectors 8 days later and a Drive Fitness Test failure.

Other Thoughts: Pretty disappointed, have been away from IBM/Hitachi for a while, and got dinged first trip back.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I was somewhat nervous about purchasing a HITACHI drive as they have always been cheaper priced than some other well known companies, but I have been pleasantly surprised. 32MB cache, 7200RPM 1TB for under $100. This drive is the main drive in a Windows Home Server Vail system and I am liking it. Plenty of space and not slow.

Cons: I haven't had the money to buy another yet.

Other Thoughts: Nice fast 1TB drive.

Pros: Great price for 32MB of cache. Not extensively tested, but it performed slightly better than my Samsung drives during one test. Good company good drives.

Cons: Not a SSD.

Other Thoughts: 1TB of spaciousness......yesssssss let the information flow through it.

2 out of 5 eggsGood value, if it lasts....

Pros: Cheap, boxed and it has a good warranty (thank heavens).

Cons: It died within 5 months. A week or so before it died I was transferring files to a larger drive and two large files were unreadable. No big deal. Then it started causing chkdsk to pull up on boot. The third time it happened, I checked the warranty. Two hours later it was dead. Not ONCE did the S.M.A.R.T. monitoring throw up a SINGLE error. I found out later it was because the Reallocated Sectors Count normalized threshold is set to 5 starting from an ideal value of 100. WD starts at 200 with a threshold of 140 (the number goes down when it reallocates)

Hitachi RMA sorta sucks too. 2 to 3 weeks to RMA my drive with no cross shipping available and their packaging rules are NUTS!

At this point I'm not sure I really want it back. I'm not sure I trust Hitachi anymore. I may just buy another WD drive to replace it and it will get here before my RMA. I have another 2TB Hitachi I just bought and I may replace it as well.

Other Thoughts: It IS loud when it reads and writes. It seems like it's not too much louder than other drives, just a bit more staccato... sorta like the difference between plucking a guitar string with your thumb or a pick. It just feels a bit more punchy to me.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid drive, no real complaints

Pros: 7200 RPM

Silent idle operation

Large capacity at a cheap price

Cons: Slightly noisy during reads/writes, but basically just sounds like any other non-low-power hard drive

Could be faster in transfers, tends around 80mb/s writes

Other Thoughts: I listen to music on professional monitors, so the decibel level of my computer is very important. Hearing reviews complaining about noise, I was worried. I'm very happy to find out that it is silent during idle operation of just being plugged in, unlike many older hard drives I've owned that hummed or whined literally incessantly. It also doesn't make noise when doing something simple like playing songs or movies. It only tends to make "average hard drive noises" when refreshing folder contents or when it's being written to.

Very happy with the price/size combination, and I got it at $79.99. It's $20 cheaper now so how can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 eggs1TB For $60

Pros: Cheap (when on sale) 1TB. Boxed.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Maybe a bit noisy. Haven't checked the acoustic setting on them yet though. Could maybe be a bit faster but fast enough. Not really complaining though.

5 out of 5 eggs1TB is never enough

Pros: Good dollar/GB ratio (when on sale). Decent read/write speed. They fit just fine into my tool-less drive bays in my XClio Windtunnel case.

Cons: Having all that free space gets you hooked into buying more?
Not that fast compared to my SSD RAID0 array?

Other Thoughts: I have four of these drives across two rigs and they just seem to keep filling up!

5 out of 5 eggsCool and quiet

Pros: Purchased these based on good reviews and nice price. Put into RAID 1. 1 drive died within 1 hour. RMAed. NewEgg had a new one to me in 1 day... Awesome! New drive rebuilt and has been running great since. Good HDTune scores. These drives are much cooler than my old WDs and are virtually silent. Hope they hope up over time.

Cons: Other than a failure on one drive, which happens on drives from all manufacturers, none.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Works like it's supposed to. Nothing special, just a 1TB drive (Which responding to another reviewer who claimed he only had 920GB, I think I may have had MORE than 1TB)that works just fine. I got it on sale for $70 and have it running in my Hackintosh rig as Time Machine backup in one partition and Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in the other. Gets a 5.9 in WEI. Also comes with a SATA cable which is nice.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: If it's the right price, get it!

4 out of 5 eggsRuns cooler than most, spins quietly

Pros: Spins quietly, almost no vibration. Runs cooler than other 7200 RPM drives during idle and sequential R/W, can be configured through a feature tool utility to idle at 4500 RPM for even cooler operation.

Cons: Owners of older computers may have problems because there is no jumper to select between 3Gbps and 1.5Gbps SATA speeds, and instead a utility program from the manufacturer must be used to set the maximum speed. Unfortunately that utility and the feature tool utility, both which are self-booting programs, have compatibility problems with some drive controllers, even when the drives can boot Windows.

Other Thoughts: The stainless steel top had several fairly deep parallel scratches from careless handling at the factory in China.

5 out of 5 eggsGood once Formatted

Pros: Super Value

Cons: Needs Formatted when Used in Cradle Enclosure

Other Thoughts: I am using this drive with a Thermaltake drop in cradle. Drive needed formatted to work with Windows.

To format the drive enter: Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, Then Select the Hitachi Drive and right click to select format options.

Pros: Great value for money you pay! Easy to install - comes with SATA cable (which is pretty long).

Cons: None so far (have to tech the temperature though, as many people mentioned it runs hot)

5 out of 5 eggsLove It!

Pros: Plenty of storage for my usage. Quiet.

Cons: None. Really, so far there are no cons with this drive.

Other Thoughts: Truth be told it had been so long since I've installed a fresh HDD I almost forgot how! But, it's not rocket-science, just needed to remember how to format so its ready for use; got too used to PnP devices (you have to open windows disk management). This drive is nice and quiet, unlike many drives which are quiet in terms of spinning, but the head writing is a terrible clicking/scratching noise; this drive fortunately does not do that. Overall, I'm satisfied; unfortunately a 2gb on sale is barely more than I paid for this.

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems.

Pros: Vast, cheap storage.

Cons: As received, the hard drive was intolerably loud. I adjusted the acoustic management parameters using HDDGuru and now the drive is whisper quiet. Whether this affects the longevity of the drive I don't know.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat deal

Pros: Great amount of storage space for the price. Also, it hasn't 'sploded yet. :)

Cons: None that I'm aware of so far.

Other Thoughts: I use this as a media storage partition, so can't really speak to boot or application load time, but it beats my old IDE-based Maxtor handily in benchmarks. Ubuntu 10.04's benchmark utility is showing me:

Minimum Read Rate: 70.1MB/s
Maximum Read Rate: 148.5 MB/s
Average Read Rate: 118.7MB/s
Average Access Time: 13.7ms

Not bad at all for a platter-based storage solution, and the price is right.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid drive, good price

Pros: Good price; bought it on sale for $70 from Newegg. Retail packaging (not a bare OEM drive). Solid performance for a no-frills hard drive. Hitachi Deskstars are cheap, no frills, and get the job done (common OEM brand in pre-built systems). Had no problems with the 500gb sata Deskstar i've been using for a year and a half now, so decided to go with Hitachi again because of the great price.

Cons: Not free, doesn't attract women

Other Thoughts: I've had very few hard drives fail on me over the years.. been through many IBMs, seagates, western digitals, toshibas, maxtors (before seagate aquisition), samsungs, and of course hitachis. In my experience (which is an extremely small sample, of course) Hitachi drives are no more/less reliable than any others. Added this 1TB deskstar to a 500gb deskstar already in this PC. Been using it heavily for a lot of media and editing HD video. No problems as of yet (1 month), able to sustain 30MB/sec sequential file write when transferring files directly from another internal drive (win7 x64, q6600, 4gb ram).
