5 out of 5 eggsreliable and dependable

Pros: i've been using Hitachi's 1TB drives for a while now and they are very reliable. They are just as fast as the WD Caviar Blacks. Can't recommend these enough.

Cons: none. the drives seem to work so far.

1 out of 5 eggsAwful, 3 DOAs

Pros: None.

Cons: Ordered 3 of these HDDs, 2 were DOA. Returned both for replacement. Newegg only replaced 1, claimed other was damaged and not responsible (Damaged during return shipping? No recourse.) Received replacement which is also DOA. Newegg refuses RMA as over 30 days. Lost $260 due to this purchase. Stay away.

Other Thoughts: Awful and expensive purchase all around. I have made many Newegg purchases with great experiences, this was the exception. HDDs are very high risk since the floods. Buyer beware!

4 out of 5 eggsvery decent

Pros: I've had one of these for over 2 years running many linux versions on various partitions and love it.
Have 2 WD's, one expensive 1TB model and this 7k1000c at least on raw transfers is fastest.

Cons: latency does show worse than WD's, but xfer again faster

Other Thoughts: ended up getting a refurb one of these as an way to save $$$, tested w / cluster tester and showed good 100%.
I like these and the WD's , the 1TB ver's w good reviews that is. But still the 7k1000c 's are best bang for the buck

2 out of 5 eggsGood for a while...

Pros: These start off working very well.
RMA process is quite good. We'll see how the replacements behave over time.

Cons: I've had two of these start off working well, then develop sector errors. The first took about 6 months, the second about a year, and caused the whole PC to hang.

Other Thoughts: I'm not so keen to purchase again.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent disk, barring unexplained noise

Pros: Solid and cheap (at least when I bought it in 2010) 1 TB drive. I use it for "nearline" storage of media, seldom-used programs, etc.

Cons: The drive is in perfect health with low hours, but it sometimes makes a persistent, obnoxious clicking noise. I have found no solution, but it's not a show-stopper for my day-to-day use. (Search for Hitachi Deskstar defect on YouTube and you will see what I mean.)

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Reliable, stable hard drive. Performance is outstanding. 230-280 Mb/s.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I have 6 of these in a raid. The Performance is outstanding. I have gotten up to 450 Mb/s transfer between HD's copying large video files.

5 out of 5 eggsFAST SOLID HD!

Pros: FAST!!!
HUGE!!
Quiet!
No glitches or hiccups.
Linux likes it!
Didn't need rebates as shell shocker and got a FAST SOLID HD!
Saturates my evga 3Ghz 680i SATA2 easily.

Cons: None REALLY!

Latency compared to a SSD?
I use this with a 60GBvertex3 for OS now but was every bit fast enough for a main drive!

The steep prices of ALL full size spinning Hard Drives?
Maybe prices will come back to reality soon!

Other Thoughts: Don't need huge amounts of storage?

now is the time to get a SSD!

I got this when it was $55 shipped!
didn't think it would almost triple within a few months!

If you need huge storage for a dvr or all the shtuff you have or want, this ROCKS!

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Hard Disk Packaging Ever

Pros: None so far.

Cons: Terrible packaging. Did the person packing these even know they were hard drives?

Other Thoughts: Ordered 4 Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.c drives. They came in a carton in a 4 container egg shell carton. They were packed at the bottom of the outer carton with paper as stuffing on top; the drives themselves were then on outer edge. When I opened the carton the drives were dislodged from the eggshell container. At least they were bubble wrapped. I will test the drives at length today. Sigh.
