2 out of 5 eggsFailed Prematurely

Pros: size, led power indicator, 2 usb/power cable, external a/c power adapter option

Cons: reliability, short warranty

Other Thoughts: Was a good drive until it failed shortly before short warranty period. Though, by the time I remembered to check, it had expired. Not a bad product other than reliability, but the short warranty period makes it seem like Hitachi didn't have great confidence in it to begin with. Not sure if I will be purchasing any Hitachi drives in the future, perhaps if the warranty shows greater confidence in the reliability.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate: You can use a regular single usb cable.

Pros: N/A - Already Reviewed Pros (see other review by Keir Azuma )

Cons: N/A - Already Reviewed Pros (see other review by Keir Azuma )

Other Thoughts: The Dual USB cable that comes with the HHD can be replaced with a regular single USB cable and it can still function properly. I have more problems with the stock dual usb cable than a single one.

Not all usb cables will work completely well with it but once you find one that works with it make it your primary cable with this HHD.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 9 months

Pros: Worked for 9 months

Cons: died a premature death after a slight clicking fit. Fingers crossed that Hitachi will honor warrant since I pulled it from the case hoping it was the SATA/USB interface.

Other Thoughts: backup, backup, backup!

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: convenient

Cons: HD didn't last more than six months. In most cases it's the interface board in which case it's an easy enough fix to purchase a new case for about 10 bucks; slap the drive in thereby good to go; but this time it was the drive itself. Very disappointed.

Other Thoughts: I will try the freezer trick in an attempt to get my data off the drive before it crashes again. This has work for me in the past on other drives. I should know better than to rely on a single backup source for my most recent pictures.

Manufacturer Response:

I'm sorry to read of the issue you are having with our external drive. Please contact the
Technical Support Center if you would like to further troubleshoot this issue. Thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsHitachi X Mobile 500GB

Pros: I like Hitachi drives. I usually replace all my drives in both notebooks & desktops with Hitachi, Hitachi being one of two brands I like to use. This being a external drive, it's just what it is. An external backup drive.
The drive I ended up using ran about 10 deg. cel warmer than the other Hitachi Drive I have [which was full, but I still use IR Heat Gun to check the temps.] 30.1 on my Hitachi, 40.5 on Toshiba. Doesn't matter if I'm uploading or downloading, Hitachi's just seem to run cooler. Kudos to Newegg & Hitachi......

Cons: Really not a con, just opened it up for the first time after 7 months & it failed after 2GB of data transfer. Bummer but I am glad it wasn't one of those things where I lost everything. If your buying drives, check them so at least you can send it back to Newegg.com:(

Other Thoughts: Even though my drive failed, I had another Toshiba in a box that I was able to use for the data I was transferring.
It's just one of those things I guess, that is why I have 5 eggs. I can't blame anyone for it, it just happens every once in a while. Let me just say this, it was my first Hitachi Drive that failed & I have purchased a lot of their drives. I just picked up another one anyways, I like having backup drives here just in case. Glad I did for this one=:)

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: none

Cons: this thing crapped out for no reason. I didn't use it very often and it was mainly used to backup my data.

Other Thoughts: go western digital, they have NEVER failed me.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great drive! Plugged it in and Windows recognized it right away...Quiet and runs smooth. Also using it to play games loaded on it for my Nintendo Wii through it's USB port. Powers up with no problems and plays hours on end with no glitches!

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsEnjoy my money

Pros: Could have exploded into flames, but did not. Could have been broken a month after use, in which case I would has lost all my data. Could have given me VD, but pretty sure it also has not done that.

Cons: All it does is make a clicking noise and light up.

Other Thoughts: I still have my health, but since this is over a month old, I cannot RMA to NewEgg... these guys used to be awesome about this.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid drive

Pros: small form factor, cables included, plug and play, sleek look

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: I've had the 320 GB version and now the 500 GB version. Happy with the product so far for both and I use both quite a bit.
