1 out of 5 eggsDead

Pros: Worked for about 3 months.

Cons: Died after about 3-4 months. Make clicking - thumping noises. Windows reports CRC errors.

Other Thoughts: 8/2013 - Still under warranty with HGST (must be the people that now own Hitachi). Sending back under RMA.

1 out of 5 eggsTwo Years Later - One Dead, One Still Alive

Pros: Cheap. Bought two for backup and video storage.

Cons: Two years later, one still works the other makes clunking noises and transfers data very slowly if at all. Didn't have any problems with it until I started using it for daily system backups. A couple weeks of daily backups seemed to be too much for it.

Other Thoughts: Maybe the power supply is bad. Might take it apart and try using the drive by itself.

2 out of 5 eggsDied in 6 months

Pros: File transfers were a few (4-6) MB/s a second at best. Worked much faster on Linux systems than Windows systems.

Cons: The drive died after 6 months of intermittent use. Now it just emits a clicking noise.

2 out of 5 eggsHard drive failed

Pros: Fast transfers, lots of storage

Cons: Failed at the one year mark. Up until then the hard drive worked great. I would recommend you back up your data regularly if you have one of these. Thankfully I did it a couple of months before I got the click of death.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed, unfortunately.

Pros: It was large. It was inexpensive at the time (got mine for 80$).

Cons: It failed after a few months (two?). Clicking noises. I brought it to a friend who opened it up, and said that the motor was the issue. It still doesn't work after over a year of sitting (I only backed up with it twice before it failed, and it mostly sat).

Other Thoughts: When I first purchased this, the reviews were slightly better, so I had hope.

1 out of 5 eggsRead reviews befor buying . . .

Pros: DOA there did not lose any info . . . Hitachi should have had a "recall" on these drives

Cons: It seems that the external case is the problem

Other Thoughts: May if I take it out of the case, it may work . . . but right now I am out of a drive and money . . .

1 out of 5 eggsMoral of the story ... alway try out external hard drive to see if they work ...

Pros: It looked like a good buy for a 2TB but did not try it until 11 months after I bought it . . . and got it to work once

Cons: but apparently the drive is physically defective and my waranty is up in three days . . . without the possibility of returning it to Hitachi before the guarantee ends since I am presently out of the U.S.

Other Thoughts: I have contacted Hitachi Support and this is what I was told . . . so I am out a 2TB drive which I hardly used . . . and good sum of money . . . I guess I should consider myself lucky that it was not full of important info . . . since it was total empty.
The MORAL: Try things out immediately so that if they don't work or are defective, you can return them in time for a replacement . . .

4 out of 5 eggsSwapped Internal HDD Died, Enclosure OK

Pros: Price was lower than a 2TB Internal HDD. Never had connection problem, attached to a Win2K8 R2 Server 24/7. Temp did not go high, at least I never felt whenever I touched the enclosure.

Cons: The Swapped (See Other Thoughts) HDD failed, not sure if HDD Enclosure has anything to do with it or not. Opening the case was hard, had to see utube videos.

Other Thoughts: I took the 2TB drive out and used as Internal Drive in my system. I put in a 500GB WD Green Drive (1Yr old at that time). Used for backing up my pics and hom videos, FBackup Weekly Scheduled.
Worked FINE untill the Sweapped 500GB DRIVE is DEAD after 1 Year of no-trouble use. The original 2TB is working OK as internal drive
