1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Seemed reasonably priced for the speed and size of the drive. 3 year warranty

Cons: Junk after 4 months of light use as a backup drive. Data loss.

Other Thoughts: I hope their support is good. I sent them an e-mail a couple of hours ago. I'll update the review after we get this worked out.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat hard drive

Pros: So fast, it'll say hello to your SATA I chip's limit.
Runs cool and isn't loud in a good case.

Cons: None, except that the price may not be for everyone.

Other Thoughts: Has been working at least mostly 24/7 in a custom built home server with SATA II and 3 other HDDs (one of which is a laptop drive). It achieves a bit over 150 MB/s on a buffered disk read test with HDParm. I got this wonderful drive quite a few bucks off.

I doubt it added much noise at all to the server's overall total, which, the server in question isn't very loud. I'd trust it for quiet stability.

I didn't test this with a SATA I chip, but even then, you still ought to be getting at least most of this hard drive's speed.

In short, if you need that capacity, and love fast data transfer, buy this baby! I recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 eggsHitachi quality all over again

Pros: As usual in my experience with Hitachi drives, these things are work horses!

Cons: Fist drive received was defective - Newegg fixed that :-)

Other Thoughts: I've used nothing but Hitachi's in my Home servers and Media Center system builds and not one has gone out in the last decade. First drive I received of this particular model was DOA but that happens. Most importantly, the new one works like I expect Hitachi drives to work: fast, reliably, and providing piece of mind.

5 out of 5 eggsNo regrets

Pros: After reading the other reviews on this product, I was a little worried. However, it seems (so far) that I have lucked out. An array of sector scans and benchmarks with HDTune indicate no problems and better performance than I have seen on my other drives.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsShoddy construction, same ol reputation

Pros: Worked WHILE it worked.

Cons: Infamous "click of death" one month out of warranty.
I decided to give this "lesser name brand" a try... and was initially pleased, until it ground down to a fast clicking death. Was used as an external redundant back-up drive...and rarely used (maybe 30 hrs total in the year+ I owned it). Unplugged when not in use.
For this drive to develope such physical issues after such little use is a mark of poor construction.

Other Thoughts: This particular brand (Deskstar aka Deathstar)has been sold several times...and has had a bad reputation follow it, no matter who owns them (IBM,HITACHI, now WESTERN DIGITAL).

This line is now being sold under the "HGST" banner. Western Digital does not have enough faith in the line, to absorb the name like Hitachi did when it was bought from IBM...it created a new name "HGST" with "A Western Digital company" in small print under it.
Folks, stay away from these drives like the plague...initial thoughts mean NOTHING, these are junk drives that will not last, and 2TBs of lost data means more than the few bucks you will save by buying it.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: It's big, fast, and quiet. 3 year warranty is hard to come by on cheaper drives these days.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Other reviews had me a bit scared. I have 5 of these drives. I ran every one of them through a day of Hitachi's drive exerciser/verifier tool and every one passed without issue. Put them in my Synology NAS and they've been humming along fine. As long as I don't lose 2 at the same time, I'm good for at least the 3 years of warranty. Seems like most people with issues are DOA or fail in a few days, so I would recommend the exerciser program before using in production.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Lots of storage, relatively fast for a platter drive. Picked it up cheap on sale

Cons: Doesn't keep up with a 4 yr old Ultrastar drive I have. May be 2x the capacity, but it's still just not the same..

Other Thoughts: Currently using it in a makeshift media server. It's ~75% full. It's lasted a month so far, no issues (knock on wood). maintains a low temperature, as well. Not as low as a few 5200/5400 RPM drives I have, but it's definitely not the hottest I've owned. So far, I'm happy with it.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware - bait and switch

Pros: 3 year warranty, so when it does die, you can pay $10 to ship it back to Hitachi and get a replacement in a few weeks. Save the box!

Cons: Beware! You will not receive this hard drive. Hitachi is substituting another drive, Newegg part number N82E16822145473. I just bought 2 of these, and each drive has 3 different part numbers listed: 0F12115 and HDS723020BLA642 printed on the drive itself, which match the other Newegg part number, and 0S02861 printed on the box, which matches the description on this part. As another reviewer pointed out, the 2 different models are the 7K2000 and the 7K3000 (no the bigger number isn't the better drive, but that's what your getting). This is clearly a bait and switch scam being perpetrated by Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. Oh, by the way one of the drives I just bought was DOA...

Other Thoughts: *** This is not Newegg's fault. *** Hitachi is fraudulently mislabeling the boxes. Newegg has no way of knowing what is inside.

HGST/WD: don't bother responding to tell me you are "sorry to read of [my] drive experience" and to call tech support, like you did on the others reviews that pointed this out. You have been caught red handed. Fix your ****.

1 out of 5 eggs50% DOA

Pros: I like the one that works. It's big and fast. 3yr warranty is virtually unheard of these days.

Cons: I don't like the one that was DOA.

Other Thoughts: I don't understand why manufacturers can't test their products before they ship them. The DOA drive just clicks incessantly and hangs my system at POST. How could that have passed even the most basic quality test?

Manufacturer Response:

I'm sorry to read of your drive experience. Please contact the Technical Support Center with the serial number of the drive, so that we can further explore this issue with you. Please let us know that you are responding to a Newegg review. Thank you.
