The Hitachi Deskstar internal hard drive kit delivers colossal add-on storage with a high performing 7200 RPM speed in a standard 3.5-inch desktop form factor. And the 3TB-capacity kits ship with the Hitachi GPT Disk Manager, so no additional hardware is required to overcome the 2.2TB limitations of Windows systems.

The Hitachi Deskstar features a robust mechanical design that exceeds the industry standard for quality and reliability. Through a unique ramp load/unload design, the risk of shock damage is minimized by eliminating direct contact between the heads and disks, reducing wear and heat while improving overall drive reliability and power efficiency.

  • newegg Easy Deployment Hitachi Deskstar 3.5” 3TB internal hard drive kit includes access to the Hitachi GPT Disk Manager, an easy to use software application designed to overcome the 2.2TB limitation of Windows systems. Works with 32bit and 64bit Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems. (The Hitachi GPT Disk Manager for Hitachi Deskstar 3.5” 3TB internal hard drive does not support RAID configurations and the resulting hard disk drive volume cannot be used as boot volumes.)
  • newegg Award-winning Performance Combining 7200RPM spin speed, 64MB generous high speed cache and 3TB colossal capacity, the HITACHI Deskstar 3TB 3.5" internal hard drive delivers exceptional read/write performance to meet even the most demanding applications.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy owner

Pros: I have 5 of them which I bought in one purchase. After an entire year of using the HDDs, I can tell you that all 5 of them are just as good as ever. I use them with a Thermaltake BlacXDuet, but I hope to one day throw them in a NAS. I've contacted support for basic questions, but that's all I've needed so far and they were available and super helpful. The drives are fine. I hope to buy more of the same in the future, see cons.

Cons: I'm always skeptical to say there's no cons. But let's just say that I have yet to see a real deal breaker. I hope the product stays available. My only concern is that I'll need to replace one and I'll find out they're discontinued and difficult to find for purchase. Already, Newegg may not be selling them anymore (from the looks of it). Shame, because they're really reliable, big and useful drives. They CAN keep up with todays storage demands. It's likely not being restocked because WD bought the division and made the change. But there will be plenty of available drives matching the speed and size I could consider. Just maybe not the same manufacturer as would be ideal.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking at this or any of the new 4TB GPT drives, you should decide before you format them (for the first time) whether or not you think the drives will ever be used in Windows XP or other operating systems that lack native support for GPT high capacity drives. If you think that's likely to happen, format them with the free HITACHI XP tool which aligns the drive for use with XP before you fill it with data and create a catch 22 situation where you potentially could "see" the drive in XP, but a reformat is eminent.

2 out of 5 eggsMight have been solid

Pros: Woulda coulda shoulda been a good solid fast drive.

Cons: I ordered two of these. One is OK. The other had road rash. It was DOA. It failed within an hour of use with astronical read and seek errors. It took 10 days to turn the RMA around -- and I paid for return shipping. Now the replacement after one week of use has bad sectors.

Other Thoughts: The replacement was ripped out of a 20-pack. Gotta love Newegg for so carefully packaging the drives for shipment. Doesn't help the fact these drives are SLAMMED around the warehouse before they ship. This has been a miserable experience. By the way, Hitachi says the serial numbers are INVALID for warranty. And Newegg won't allow another replacement. And I did order the Deskstar 7K3000 model, but Newegg has rejiggered the product ID. Thats' why it doesn't show me as "verified owner".

Manufacturer Response:

I'm sorry to read of the issue you are having with our external drive. Please contact the
Technical Support Center so that we can look into this further with this issue, and please let us know that you are responding to a Newegg review and provide us with the serial number so that we can get you to the proper people handling this. Thank you.

4 out of 5 eggsI'm Running Five Of These

Pros: Large Capacity
7200 platter RPM
64MB Cache
Inexpensive
Run Cool
Many Device Configuration Settings (dma, read-ahead, integrated temperature probe, NCQ, etc., etc., etc.)

Cons: Hitachi Technical Support
Not Fast Enough
High device failure rate compared to the technologies used in more mature drive architectures.

Other Thoughts: B's Axiom states that there is no such thing as too much hard-disk storage. At 3GB, these are currently the biggest cheap ATA drive one can get.

This family of drives is SATA 3. I am running them as SATA II with no issues. Even with a SATA II interface the performance is impressive. I'm getting peak data read throughput of 170MB/s, and average throughput of 130MB/s. I have some similar drives from WD and the Hitachi's are faster.

I see people rating the drives down because of the high failure rate. Out of six drives, I had one DOA (hence me only running five drives, get it?). I'm not so sure how much I'll fault Hitachi, as these are on the cutting edge. I mean, its not like there a whole bunch of 6GB drives out there and its just poor quality-control. I would expect there to be a higher failure rate with newer technologies and manufacturing processes. Read the Hitachi white papers and you can start to appreciate what goes into 3TB of storage.

4 out of 5 eggsKnow what you are buying

Pros: Great Drives works perfectly no problems if you know what you are doing.

Cons: none.... anymore

Other Thoughts: To all those that post, it was DOA or Keeps going off line in my RAID or My NAS would not recognize the drive. Most of the problem is not with your drive but the housing you are installing the drive into, most computers and RAID and/or NAS enclosures are rated for 3.0/GB throughput so when you install a 6.0GB drive into hardware that can only handle 3.0/GB then you will have major issues. Is there a simple solution? YES! buy a jumper and attach the jumper across terminal 5 & 6 this will throttle down the drive from 6.0/GB to 3.0/GB so it will be compatible with your hardware setup. How do I know this?.... well, it's printed on the drive... ever thought about reading the sticker label printed on every drive? neither did I until I was running into similar issues. Hope this helps those who can solve their issues with a simple .25 cent jumper

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome drive

Pros: Bought 5 of these online from someone else running in a RAID 5 for over 6 months now, no issues. If using Windows, partition the drive using GPT to get all 3TB (well more like 2.7TB) of storage in a single partition, otherwise you will need to use multiple partitions no bigger than 2TB each if using MBR.

Cons: none since drives were not bought from newegg due to their horrendous shipping methods for hard drives.

Other Thoughts: newegg is amazing for everything except hard drives. you would think that with their extremely high hard drive failure rma's that they'd spend the extra fifty cents in better packing material for their hard drives instead of all the time & money being wasted by both them & their customers over this atrocity.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Scored this drive for $60 less than list price. Installed in Win 7 Ultimate x64 machine; set up as GPT and all 3TB (2.7 actual) was there. Transferred ~2TB at about 100 MB/s to it as soon as it was in my case.

Cons: I need more of them.

1 out of 5 eggsDeathStar

Pros: None.

Cons: I purchased 5 of the new Hitachi 3TB drives for my backup system at work (4 in use and 1 as a backup). Drives installed with no problems. However in less than 1 week 1 drive kept going offline. Replaced with my spare. Now about 3 weeks later another drive has failed. Back when IBM owned the DeskStar drives I quickly nicknamed them DeathStars because of the poor reliability. Seems not much has changed since Hitachi took over. I'll try to get credit for another brand but if NewEgg won't do that then I guess I'll have to ask for a standard replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: HDD is on Synology NAS supported drive list.
Large 3TB size.
Affordable price for such storage.
7200rpm/64mb cache.

Cons: Drive DOA. NAS wouldn't see drive. Windows desktop also didn't recognize drive.

Drive was very hot (almost too hot to handle after only 30 minutes in NAS and desktop). Generating an RMA to replace unit with another drive.

Other Thoughts: I'll update the review once I get a working drive.
