5 out of 5 eggsGood Ol' Hitachi Drive

Pros: 3TB, enough said. I thought my previous 1TB drive was huge until that started running out of space. Formatted fine on Windows 7 at 2.72TB which is technically correct in terms of tebibytes. Still running fine. So far so good.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Currently using this drive as a storage compliment to the much smaller SSD in my desktop.

Since March 2011 - Power on count: 718, Power on hours: 11827

3 out of 5 eggsFirst Drive Failed, Second is Fine for now

Pros: *High drive space
*Comes with GPT software for Windows XP
*Easy to install

Cons: New Drive Failed before 3 months were up while an old 2006 HDD worked perfectly fine. Absolutely destroyed my system due to dual booting and symbolic links for OS things such as temporary files pointing to the secondary drive. Required considerable time fixing my boot, removing windows 7 boot record, etc. Ended up copying files and clean installing. I suggest anyone who buys this drive to wait a while before moving critical system components onto it lest they suffer the same headaches I did.

Other Thoughts: Replacement RMA policy is a bit absurd based on the packaging requirements as I received the bare bones HDD with just 2 plastic air bags and cheap plastic holders. For sending it back they want foam packaging and do not accept anything one can realistically buy at a shipping center or office supply store near my location. Make sure to keep your original packaging!

5 out of 5 eggsCheap then, now expensive

Pros: I've had 3 of these for more than a year with no problems. I expected some, but nothing. I bought them when they were $139. $139!!! Wow.

Cons: Price now is $329! If I would have known they were gonna double in price, I would have bought 5 more.

Other Thoughts: They say prices are going to be somewhat high for most of 2012. That's sure going to help SSD sales. It already has.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate - Still going strong

Pros: Originally bought this drive ~13 months ago, was fully satisfied.
Writing this second review to confirm that it still functions at over a year out.
However, I am using this drive as an external back up drive, and it is not used routinely but only to update my backup every two months.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I have found that though many external enclosures will specify that they only function with drives up to 1 or 2 TB, I have tried this drive with a few different enclosures like this and the drive has always functioned correctly through them. Though, I did not attempt to format the drive while it was in an external enclosure.

4 out of 5 eggsJury's still out...

Pros: - Cheap when I bought them
- Fast
- Quiet
- Great capacity

Cons: - 1 of 6 failed so far after 5 months of light usage
- Bad sectors caused drive to drop out of RAID because of command timeout (no CCTL/TLER enabled by default)
- Run a bit warm (42-45 C) in my enclosure

Other Thoughts: I have these in a 6 bay mini-DTX enclosure with a 180mm fan directly in front of the HDD cage. Despite this, they still run a little warm 42-45 C during light to moderate usage. These are attached to an LSI MegaRaid 9260-8i in RAID 5. After about 5 months one drive started dropping out of the raid without SMART failures. After rebuilding 2-3 times the bad sectors and predictive failures started to rack up. Bought a spare at the post-flood price (ouch) a few days ago, replaced the failing drive and so far so good. I'm a little disappointed because I've had Hitachi drives in the past run for years and years without failing. I'm supposing I just got a bad drive in my batch or they were really cheap for a reason. Note that because there is no CCTL/TLER on these, when they start going bad they WILL drop out of RAID arrays. I will RMA the failed drive with Hitachi shortly.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive So Far

Pros: I have had this drive for 2 months now and I have been impressed with the speed. I am running Win7 64 bit. Installed and recognized the drive no problem. It is really fast rendering video but I am only using it as a backup drive.

Cons: If it fails, it's a lot of data at risk. Jury is still out on the longevity.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going strong

Pros: I put 24 of these in a NORCO enclosure running off an Areca ARC-1880ix-12-4G SAS controller card. They've been on 24/7 for 8 months in a backup server and I haven't lost 1 drive. Very impressed so far.

Cons: I have no complaints.
-Price: According to my invoice, I got these drives for $180 each... now they are listed at $330.
-Floods in Thailand

1 out of 5 eggsBad drives or bad luck?

Pros: All specs look good on the paper -- 7200 RPM, large cache, etc.

Cons: Runs really warm (or hot).

Other Thoughts: Purchased one about month ago. That drive had way too many bad blocks (as checked by "badblocks" on Linux). Sent it back to for replacement. Bought another one. Just arrived today. The system saw the drive on the first try but had trouble:

kernel: ata6: SError: { PHYRdyChg CommWake DevExch }
kernel: ata6: hard resetting link
kernel: ata6: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)
kernel: ata6: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)

Then it died -- neither BIOS nor the OS can see it. :-( Bad l

5 out of 5 eggsWORKS!

Pros: this hdd is in my Mac Pro 2008 as a third drive and it had no issues since sep 2011. I work intensely with video and it works just fine. It works silently and stays at 37 *C.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I have two of these drives and they work perfectly. Back in sep 2011 they were under $200 but now they are kinda too expensive...

5 out of 5 eggsSpace!

Pros: 3 TB
Good performance
Purchased 6 so far, no issues

Cons: Advanced Format gives me a headache.

Other Thoughts: I'm using them in 2 3-disk software raid5 arrays, under Debian GNU/Linux. The first has been running for almost a year, I just got the second set up recently.

The first array I futzed around a lot to make sure I got the alignment right.

The second one I just trusted parted (version 2.3) to do it right, and it seems to have worked fine.

parted DEVICE mklabel gpt
parted DEVICE unit TB mkpart primary ext3 0 3.00
