4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: High Capacity, 6Gb SATA

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I ordered 2 of these. One was DOA, the other failed in less than a week. Newegg RMA'd both of them, and the replacements have been working fine in a SAMBA fileserver running 24/7. The first drives were very poorly packaged, so I attributed their failure to shipping damage. The replacements came in air cushion packaging; much better protection. -1 egg for the bad packaging Newegg, but the drives seem to be ok. At least so far.

5 out of 5 eggsideal

Pros: I needed large capacity and with these I can take advantage of 6G/s speed supported by the motherboard. They run 24/7, not just powered on but constantly actively transferring and to date have been perfect.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have had a defective drive or two over the years from Hitachi but overall they have been among the best I've used. I use them (these and earlier models) in FTP, video file servers, and video editing machines where they experience very heavy use for many years with almost never a failure. (A notable professional video and graphics rendering computer maker uses HGST almost exclusively. I have bought from them but generally prefer building my own.) I won't call them out here but in such environments I have had a 100% failure rate with 2 other very popular brands. Nothing is perfect. HGST has been close.

We'll have to wait and see how it goes now that Western Digital owns HGST since history has shown when one buys another the product quality often changes.

5 out of 5 eggsVery happy

Pros: Quiet, cool, reliable, fast.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I wanted an ultra reliable drive. I run Win 7 on a Plextor SSD for games. I use the big Hitachi for Linux and data storage.

4 out of 5 eggsripped from GTech G-Raid 4TB (2x 2TB)

Pros: The control card that was in the G-Raid just wasn't cooperating, so I ripped them out. They work well now.

Cons: The control card that was in the G-Raid just wasn't cooperating, so I ripped them out. They work well now.

Loud deep thunder-like data reading/writing. Not a bad thing, just sounds like a pickup truck for hard drives.

Other Thoughts: My G-Tech was a 4TB G-Raid and it contained 2 of these. I've converted over to using Hot-Swap bays and doing backups manually instead of doing Raid-0 and taking up HDD bays.

I use these as my data drives for home editing on Avid Media Composer and other Apps (on a PC). I edit with optimized 145mbps and original media 25mbps - 45mbps. I'm currently on SATA II card, and even with on-board SATA III motherboard I didn't get more than a solid consistent 115MB/s write speed on mid to large sized files. Reading from an HDD and writing to an SSD I got 300MB/s, being SATA II respectfully.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty Hard Drive & Poor Return Policy

Pros: Specs indicate it should have high reliability but unfortunately that was not my experience. I could not assess performance as the drive was faulty.

Cons: 1. Faulty drive. It started making loud repetitive clicking noise (~ 1Hz) after my first attempt to copy files to it. It started writing slowly then stopped completely with the copy program freezing. I had to reboot and found the drive was now making the same clicking noise ALL the time - even before accessing the drive. I restarted file copy and used a performance monitor program to watch disk read/write speed. Upon starting copy the read speed of my old drive was 100X faster than the write speed of this new drive briefly, before the write speed dropped to 0 bytes/sec where it stayed until I rebooted.
2. Unreasonable return policy. The buyer is responsible for return shipping of faulty goods.

Other Thoughts: This is the first faulty hard drive I have received and I have been building computers since the 80s. However, as Forrest Gumps T-shirt indicates S... happens. As such I was not overly perturbed - until I found out the return policy for faulty items. If you feel like I do (on principle) then I would advise you to shop elsewhere unless you think it is fair to pay for return shipping for faulty goods.

5 out of 5 eggsFlooding couldnt be this bad

Pros: Its a great drive, i bought the same type of model about a year ago and its been working pretty much 24/7 with no hiccups. They used to be called Deathstars on alot of sites but i believe it was due to just a bad batch a number of years ago.

Cons: Price, My entire rig didnt cost over 400 when i built it a year ago. This drive was 65 back then if im not mistaken.

Other Thoughts: I would never pay this much for a hardrive, No matter how well built it is they last about 5 or so years before entering the danger zone since they have moving parts. Longer that most SSD's but still not worth it. If money is an issue, Buy a decent SSD and be happy, or buy a cheapo seagate and pray you dont get a lemon. If your fortunate enough to not have financial burdens, then u wont be dissapointed by this drive.

1 out of 5 eggsfailing after 3 days

Pros: large cache, and disk capacity.

Cons: Disk "SMART" tools show "65% health" warnings after 3 days. drive becoming horribly slow.

Other Thoughts: There was no indication of any damage or bad handling on the box.. So shy this drive is having such a quick failure is strange.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Great drive. Quietish, fast and with a great MTBF.

Cons: Newegg's recent 190% price increase ($210->$400), which is blamed on the flooding in Thailand, occurred so quickly that it's more like disaster profiteering than it is any real change in the cost of what inventory they had at the time.
