4 out of 5 eggsHelp with hard drives

Pros: I do Not have This drive Ultrastar Drive

However I have been using ten (10) Hitachi 3TB for over a year.

From years of screw-ups I have learned to Back-up all data.
Best clone the disk and they will both be the same

Cons: This info may help others
I check a disk with FREE CrystalDiskInfo 5.0.0 . . ou will get a
Green = good, yellow=caution and red = DEAD
You get much more data such as times drive has been
turned off/on and the number of hours in use.

In retrieving data this program
Spotmau…”2011 PowerSuite Professional”
Cost under $100.00 but will read drive for data also will work with reformatted disk

1 out of 5 eggsNever buy HGST/Hitachi!

Pros: High Capacity, one of the first 3TB HDD

Cons: Fails Fails Fails

Other Thoughts: In my 14 years of buying, building, and customizing computers, I have only had 2 hard drives fail on me, the first was WD, and I vowed to never buy them again, and now the second, Hitachi. Losing 70GB of data was shocking 10 years ago, but now, losing 3TB worth of data has left me depressed for weeks. Everything was working find and then out of the blue, one day, my Hitachi HDD started being detected as a RAW file system, my OS was only giving me the option to format, and after installing HGST Disk Manager, chkdsk made my 3TB of data disappear forever! I've ran multiple data recovery attempts using different softwares and NADA! Yes, it's still under warranty but that will not bring my data back.. Don't buy Hitachi hard drives if you value your data!

2 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: Speed and reputation. Hitachi has had a good reputation for being *the* enterprise class SATA drives to use with a RAID or a NAS system.
The 1TB and 2TB UltraStars have been great.
I don't know what happened with these.

Cons: The failure rate is ridiculously high. Also Hitachi does not even provide to end users a utility that will test a 3TB drive and tell you if it's actually bad or not.

Their utilities only work on drives less than 2TB in size. Horrible support. They could not even provide me with any alternative tools to test the drives.

So how are you supposed to tell if a drive is actually bad or not? That's why the RMA rate is so high! For a drive this expensive you would think Hitachi would have decent support -- but they have just spit in the face of end users and basically show that they don't care.

They obviously have internal tools that tests drives that get sent in for RMAs -- why not provide END USERS with a support tool for the drives!? What are they trying to hide from us!??

Other Thoughts: If they want to make drives with a high failure rate and not provide any support to end users, then lower the price of the drives

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate to Review Below

Pros: When they work they work well

Cons: As stated below purchased 4 of these drives. 1 Drive has been RMA'd already (Still waiting for the replacement). Now another one of the 4 has failed.
Seems like this drives QC is very shoddy. 505% failure rate in less than a year of light service is not good.

I can say for certain now that when I go to purchase more drive to expand my SAN at home they will not be Hitachi drives.

4 out of 5 eggs75%

Pros: Huge Storage Space
Good Specs
Enterprise Grade

Cons: Bought 4 or these from another vendor a few Months ago. One of the 4 has started giving S.M.A.R.T. Errors.
Just shipped it out for Warrenty RMA today 6/30/12
These drive are Configured in Raid 5 on a Highpoint 2720SGL Raid Adapter.
The other 3 drives seem to be operation Well

Other Thoughts: Haven't used Hitachi Much in the past. Will reserve judgement on them until I see the expediency of the RMA Process.

5 out of 5 eggsMaking up for below review

Pros: 5-year warranty
SATA III (6.0 Gb/s)
Enterprise-class with RAID support
Largest drive available

Hitachi products are valuable enough that Western Digital moved to acquire them back in March. The deal is still pending EU approval. Some would consider this a 'Con'... really it's an 'Other Thought' that wouldn't fit : )

Cons: Price, of course... back in April, Hitachi reported supply problems due to electric-part supply issues from the tsunami and earthquakes in Japan. The supply-chain lag probably means that wasn't felt right away, but is still being felt today. Not sure how other HDD manufacturers are being affected, but $499 is pretty painful, even if this drive is currently (IMO) king of the industry.

But, as always, the best will cost you. : )

Other Thoughts: This review is to make up for the review below, where an unidentified reviewer wrote:

"I have had or been "in charge of" at least 15 Hitachi drives about 10 years ago, that were sold by IBM under their own label. Of those 15 drives... FIVE failed"

The reviewer does not even own one of these drives (disclaimer: neither do I), and is reviewing a current drive based on an incident that happened TEN YEARS AGO and INVOLVED A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER. Really? Get over it.

Any computer-hardware industry goes through shifts and changes... you have to keep in touch with the most current information when purchasing equipment. Mr. N/A's review would have been irrelevant regardless of the number of stars he assigned.

Considering the intelligence and bias the reviewer exposes, I would assert that the drive failures were more likely related to his/her lack of knowledge in how to handle a hard drive when installing. It wouldn't surprise me if the drives were IDE and hot-swapped : 0

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: performs as advertised. huge increase in read/write speeds. no DOA's

Cons: high price but thats what you have to expect for bleeding edge.

Other Thoughts: Purchased 5 drives to use in a NAS in RAID 10 environment. Pushed 3TB worth of data to all drives over the weekend with no issues. Drives have been powered for > 1 week.
