4 out of 5 eggsGood drive, but could be better

Pros: Large capacity, inexpensive at the time, and somewhat reliable

Cons: within 1.5-2 years it somehow managed to corrupt the filesystem on it, took me a week or so to get it fixed, later on the smart data on it was reporting all sorts of errors, such as bad sectors, long startup times, temperatures 50+ degrees C (as high as 65 degrees at one point).

Other Thoughts: might just end up ripping the drive out of its casing to see if there's any improvements, otherwise will have to replace it, also the casing itself could have had a better design because I noticed that there is barely any room for proper airflow to help keep the drive cool, also wish the warranty was a little longer.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk Fails After 6-Months

Pros: Large Capacity, inexpensive at the time

Cons: Using this on a Mac with two partitions. Worked great until a few weeks ago then began disconnecting from my Mac without any reason, now drive is corrupted and failed. Piece of junk. Avoid at all costs

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsSlow External

Pros: Large. Good Drive. Does what it is supposed to.

Cons: Used for one month as external but it was the USB 2.0 interface was a little slow even for USB 2.0. Great for Internal but very hard to get out of case. Obviously voided warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice and very cheap

Pros: On sale, fast drive, tons of storage space.

Cons: I pinched the hell out of my finger at one point trying to pry a case open.

If you aren't careful (or just unlucky) you'll destroy the casing. Not a con if you plan on throwing it away.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these when they were on sale for the sole intention of breaking them open and using the hard drives in my PC. I only thought to do so because of the comments here and believe me, it was well worth it. I used a putty knife to pry the cases open and I'm happy because I was able to put an old 1TB drive back in one of the shells and reuse everything.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Value These Days

Pros: So the nice shiny drive you get inside is actually a Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000. To be more precise, it an HDS723030ALA640. You can find the specs on Hitachi's web site. 7200 rpm, 2.7 TB formatted. Nice sustained transfer rates. I'm using a pair of them in my two Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 eSATA external enclosures that I purchased from Newegg.

Cons: It's hard to pry open the case. You'll want to use a couple of flat screwdrivers to work your way around the edges of the case. Don't pinch your fingers like I did.

Other Thoughts: I probably voided my warranty by popping them open, but I bought two of them so I can mirror them with ms synctoy.

3 out of 5 eggsDOA out of the box

Pros: Ordered on Thursday and received it on Friday. Newegg rocks on UPS shipping from Memphis.

Cons: Plugged it in and not found. Noticed the plug in and power board is way inside the case. Secure but mounted well behind the case opening. The power fit well but the cord would not even stay in the mini USB connection. I had another cord with a small jacket that worked. Next the computer did not find the drive. Went through the whole ordeal to set up the computer and bios and still nothing. I tried it on 2 other computers and even tried the power supply from a 1TB version of the same drive. Still no go. I finally stuck my ear to it and plugged the power in. All to hear a soft beeping sound and absolutely no hard drive spin up at all. Spend about 30 minutes getting a RMA. It's going back and I get to wait a week or so till the drive is opened in California to be sure it is dead.
I needed the drive pretty quickly to back up a failing drive I got late last year. Not going to happen now and I hope I dont loose all the movies I have stored on the failing drive b4 this is exchanged.

Other Thoughts: Never had to many problems with Newegg. It is a pleasure to work with the support group. If there products were as good they would be hard to beat.
In the old days it was rare to have a bad drive. I am really getting disappointed with the ratios of failing drives in today's market. I really hope the companies get a hold of the problems and get back to dependability and happy customers.

5 out of 5 eggsRip it out!

Pros: 512k sectors
7200RPM
Reliability

Cons: Hard to get the case off, so be very careful prying it
Almost 1/2 the price of the internal

Other Thoughts: Using inside a ZFS server (16) ... with ZIL turned off, I can get 500 - 750MB transfers (10gbit)
Also have the 25+ 2tb models, none have died yet (2+ years) with heavy use

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome price on a great HDD

Pros: Face it -- you buy this to pull the drive out and use it as an internal. It is a smoking deal now for a very high quality 7200 rpm 3tb drive that is excellent for RAID arrays.

Cons: The case, just don't cut yourself on it when removing the drive.

Other Thoughts: Just buy it and dismember it already.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It works fine if hooked up only to the computer and I only want to use it on the computer

Cons: Can not get the memory to work if not directly hooked to the computer-ie boxee or directly to my tv. It won't transfer from the computer to the boxee either. I have several other external drives that don't have this problem. Called hitachi to help-they said call boxee-called boxee-they said call hitachi. it would be different if other externals didn't work but only this one doesn't. I tried to reformat but that won't work
