2 out of 5 eggsTwo have failed

Pros: Decent in RAID config
Warranty period of 5 years is nice.

Cons: You're gonna need the warranty. I bought a pair of these in 2011 and both have failed this year.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy these if you need a drive that will last for a while. Fortunately, HGST honors their warranty and has replaced the failing drives.

1 out of 5 eggsData Corruption

Pros: 3TB and Quite HDD

Cons: Data Corruption, lots of files that are of no good.

Granted, this drive was used to store back ups of movies, for a network media player. So the lost data was not critical, but it will still be a pain to re-rip the Blu-Rays again.

Its probably finally time to get a NAS with redundancy.

To top it off, they do not even offer a cross ship RMA policy, so I have to buy another large drive to store some of the movies that are not corrupt, or spend even more time ripping 3TB of movies again!

I will never purchase another Hitachi HDD.

Other Thoughts: Very Disappointed in the reliability of this drive.

2 out of 5 eggsNot so happy

Pros: Large

Cons: Not very reliable. Won't quite fail, but won't really work either.

Other Thoughts: I first purchased one of these drives to replace a aging WD drive that had started to fail. The first drive started throwing random SMART errors that were not consistent or reproducible. I contacted the manufacturer and was told that their diagnostic tools would not work with the 3Tb drive. I looked for other ways to test and make sure it was working properly. It would test good one day and fail the next. Finally in frustration I contacted the manufacturer who replaced the drive under RMA. The second drive had a clicking sound as the head would repeatedly reset itself over and over. I migrated the disk to a NAS as part of a raid array to get a different format on the drive (ext4 vs. NTFS). The tendency of the drive to repeatedly reset the read head did not stop and I would get sometimes 30 sec. to 1 minute pauses while the head was repeatedly reset. Meanwhile the drive would sometimes pass the smart tests sometimes fail (abort the test). I finally pulled the drive and replaced it with WD Red. I'm much happier now.

5 out of 5 eggsStill working fine

Pros: Still working fine after a year. Quiet, quick, cool.

Cons: Need to partition.

Other Thoughts: There is this 3tb unlock thing that really didn't work for me but with a partition it's fine.

5 out of 5 eggsFormat to GPT first before using

Pros: 2.72 TB space; I got it when it was on sale for $130.
When you connect the drive to a windows 7 PC, it may show up either as 750GB hard drive or 2TB hard drive based on your motherboard. Please do the following;
First delete the drive(if you have formatted it to NTFS or shipped as NTFS) using windows disk management (right click my computer and click manage then click disk management) then, convert the hard drive to use the GUID partition or(GPT) disk partitioning system as listed below;
1) From windows 7 start- search program files -- type DISKPART then enter;
2) At the DISKPART prompt, type---- list disk then enter; It lists all your hard drives; Make note of the disk number you want to convert.
3)At the DISKPART prompt, type---- select disk 0,1,2 etc (make sure put space before the number) then enter;
4) In the DISKPART utility, after selecting the drive you want to convert, enter the following command:CONVERT GPT then enter;

Done; 2.72TB will appear in my computer.

Cons: None from the drive.
Windows and MB limitations, so users should know how to format the drive to use as boot up or backup based on their UEFI BIOS motherboards.

Pros: Lots of space. I bought three of these together.

Cons: Out of the three drives one failed after a few months like others have reported.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after a few months

Pros: 3TB yay!

Cons: I have 3 of these in my backup server and 2 of them have failed so far! It causes Server 2008 R2 to hang right before the login screen. There is something wrong with the boot sectors on these drives. Stay away. It also sucks that Hitachi has no advanced replacement. This means that you have to ship them the drive first and then they will send you another.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy this brand again.

1 out of 5 eggsFour month life span

Pros: When functional, was on-par performance wise with any of my 1.5TB-2TB drives.

Cons: After four months began having numerous bad blocks, hit the SMART failure thresholds, and transfer rate dropped to under 50kb/s. It took me a month at those rates, but at least I was able to recover my data, finally. It goes in for RMA tomorrow.

Other Thoughts: Shortest life-span I've had of any drive I've bought in the last ten years.
