5 out of 5 eggs8x On my NAS

Pros: Inexpensive, low power, quiet and reliable.

Cons: Ain't 2TB.

Other Thoughts: I've got 8x of these running on my NAS in a ZFS pool. I have a write once read many media workload. Pool has been up and running for more than a year in RAIDZ with no failures or hiccups.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap and Good

Pros: It was cheap. It was tiny. HGST (Hitachi) Travelstar drives have shown themselves in the past to be reliable (for cheap drives). This is just large file storage (video) and does not need to be fast. The longer it lasts, the happier I'll be.
So far, this has been quick (enough) and quiet enough. I have purchased two and they are each now packaged in an inexpensive aluminum external case. Their power draw is also not excessive @ almost 900mA for startup and less than 500mA the rest of the time. So, my 2.5A hub can run them each off of a single USB port. Aaah, the joys of large capacitors!

Cons: Just that HGST is now a WD company. I hope they let their Hitachi acquisition continue to make the long-lived drives I'm used to. That's why I bought this drive.

Other Thoughts: I've only had one about a month and the other about a week. We'll see if they hold up. I'm betting they will. I'll check back and update the review if one fails.
Careful mounting them in the SABRENT EC-NU25K case. It's a tight squeeze - and you don't want to bend the drive frame. Cooling is good, though.
Mine are formatted to EXT4 and did that nicely and painlessly.

5 out of 5 eggsInstalled replacing a bad HP HD

Pros: quick instal on my friends HP Pavilion, last hard drive was giving blue screen alot, it is on windows 7 premium 64. finally crashed so I got him this drive so far it is great

Cons: nothing yet,

Other Thoughts: was quick install. it is on my friends HP Pavilion g6. I seen he had space for ram so I'm going to pull out ram out of my alienware 18X an buy ram from here. no one in my town sells *GB sticks. and buy 2 of these HD my alienware has 2 spots besides my SSD drive .

1 out of 5 eggsBad Sectors

Pros: It spins up and mostly works.
Newegg packaged it very well.
So far RMA is painfully slow.

Cons: Fails diagnostics and scandisk.
You can mount the drive, see files, etc, but fails the HGST diagnostics and scandisk finds bad sectors.
I chose eggsaver shipping, so over two weeks to get a replacement, even paying $10 to ship it back.

Other Thoughts: Got this as a data drive to go with an mSATA SSD in an new Intel NUC. The NUC is being replaced for a bad SATA port, and the hard drive I got is bad as well. Two other known good drives pass in the replacement NUC, this drive fails tests. I have the 7200 rpm version of this drive, still going strong after a year.

3 out of 5 eggsNot the best

Pros: Got this as a replacement for a PS3 Slim's failing HDD. It works.

Cons: Unlike some of the other reviewers here, my drive is not anywhere close to quiet. The "gurgling" of disk activity can be heard quite distinctly from where it sits on my desk, three feet away, installed in the console. This drive is also noticeably slower than the one it is replacing.

Other Thoughts: At the risk of being that bitter guy who leaves bad reviews of the retailer rather than the product, I have a beef with NewEgg on this one. The first drive they sent me was DOA; would not spin up at all. I paid for their "discounted" shipping return label, which was UPS ground. NewEgg then turns around and sends a replacement drive back with Super Eggsaver. In the past some of NewEgg's competitors have sent me replacements via overnight delivery on their own dime. Not saying that it was called for here, but it is something to keep in mind.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good purchase (HGST 0J22413)

Pros: Cheapest on the market.
Low heat & power-- very important to me.

I own about 8 of these in different laptops, and also the 72k model as well.

Cons: Not meat to support ANY antiquated operating system's prior to 2008/9, thats when AF when was made available in mainstream i believe. So -this is not the answer to upgrade an antiquated MAC-XP-LINUX machine and expect it to run like new. Alignment issues may be a problem if your still trying to use outdated technology- thats all AF drives though not specific to this one. Hitachi drive's are known for a short life, that's not big secret.

Could have a bigger cache

Other Thoughts: Its a very good purchase for a normal/average user. Used properly it should last forever. Now if your a power user you should have bought something else, this is not a high performance drive. SHAME on you for trying to save 15$- you read the specs before you bought it you know better. Read/Write speeds are fine, I have tested it by itself with proper format and by itself. I use as a stripe drive drive with an SSD. I wouldn't make it a primary drive- but that's me. I'm a power user and i know better. These drives have a short life when abused(2-3yrs max)- like anything i suppose. My typical use on this is 128/256SSD for an OS and use this to extend C: drive onto so i end up 1.2tb C:drive and all the OS stuff stays on the SSD.. That give's me speed and lots of space.
