1 out of 5 eggsDecent drive, but disconnects with windows 8.1

Pros: Good price
Nice enclosure design
Quiet

Cons: Constantly disconnects/reconnects any time it is not in use.
Seems to be a compatibility issue with Windows 8, but there is NOTHING on their webpage to indicate a problem or help with a solution. I am very disappointed in this as my Seagate external drives run just fine, no matter the OS.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after a year

Pros: Huge storage capacity.

Cons: Starting to fail me after changing my pc. It ran great on my old PC. I find this odd. Thought it was driver, usb issues, update everything thats needs to be updated. Always took care of it, gentle use. It still reads, and writes but I get these random disconnects and clicking sound more recently. Using different check disk software and it freezes (disconnects/reconnects) all the time. Its just great that it failed me a few months after the 1 year manufacturer warranty.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, this could be an OS issue if you are running Windows 8 in your new environment. We can also help to troubleshoot any other issues. Please contact our Technical Support team. http://www.hgst.com/support/contact-support

1 out of 5 eggsUsed once and failed

Pros: Purchased over a year ago because of the price.

Cons: I wanted to use this as a offline backup for all my movies, pictures and music. I backup everything and set it aside. 1 year later I wanted to update my backups. plug it in my computer and the drive failed. useless. good thing I still have my original files in my computer or else it would been a major headache. but now its been over a year I can't even claim manufacturer's warranty for replacement. waste of $160 and time. don't get this drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, could you pleae contact me at john.washkevich@hgst.com to look further into your issue. Thank you.

3 out of 5 eggsSLOOOW USB3.0

Pros: It works well.

Cons: Performance, at least for me, is lacking. On USB 3.0 I was getting only about 42MB/sec. That's barely better than USB 2 speeds. I only have one machine that has USB 3.0 ports, so I couldn't try another host, but I have other USB 3.0 stuff I've used on that machine and it can do >100MB/sec. I finally just cracked open the case on the drive enclosure (which I failed to do without fairly destroying the case) and put the drive on a SATA port. There I can sustain about 95MB/sec. This is still quite slow compared to other 3T and 4T drives I have, but that's not too surprising since this HGST is specifically a low-power, slow RPM drive.

Other Thoughts: I'm using the drive as an offline backup for my NAS. Now and then I slip the drive into an external SATA base, mount it, run rsync, and then pull it. It's working fine for that. 150MB/sec would be nicer, but 95MB/sec is usable. 42MB/sec... It takes 26 hours to write 4 TB at 42MBsec.

Just understand if you get this model it's not about performance.

Yo, HGST... If you're gonna give us a USB 3.0 drive, could you give us one that can beat USB 2 speeds?

4 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Have had this running 24/7/300 (10 months) since I bought it. No problems, still error free. First couple of months, heavy writes to drive. Now just the occasional reads with some writes to update data.

Cons: As I said in my original review (below), the cooling, IMHO, is inadequate, especially during summer. I use a USB fan aimed directly at the front vents to keep the temps reasonable.

Other Thoughts: I do monitor temps and health of all my drives, running a surface scan once per month (stablebit scanner). No problems with drive so far.

Good for the price, but I'd rather buy a 4tb bare drive and stick it in a Rosewill RX-358 U3C external case (which has a built it fan).

4 out of 5 eggssurprisingly good for price

Pros: lots of space per price tag [got it on sale so it was less than current 200$ price tag]. has been working fine for past half year

Cons: tad slower read speeds than the two drive giants - seagate/wd. Not a con for me, but some might notice the bigger size vs wd/seagate [seagate backup being the thinnest external i have, then wd [which is the shortest of the 3] but mid tall, and the touro is both taller/as tall as the seagate and wider.

Other Thoughts: it has been running like a champ has had no scary moments like I have had with my wd 4tb [it had failed to id the drive/error in install even though i had used it plenty etc etc]

5 out of 5 eggsBought 4 for internal use

Pros: Cheaper than bare drives. Bought four of these for internal use in new build. Converted from MBR to GPT, worked dandy in Windows 7 64-bit.

Cons: Not the fastest drives around, but perfectly adequate for media storage.

Other Thoughts: Thinking about two more, as I still have 2 sata ports open.

2 out of 5 eggsDied after 6 months

Pros: Worked ok at first

Cons: Pretty slow drive, started freezing up when watching movies, drive failed after 6 months, also does not ever spin down, only after computer is shut down drive will spin down. Trying to figure how to return the product for warranty replacement.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works...

Pros: - 4TB is massive (even compared to 2TB)
- Transferred ~1.5 TB of stuff to it in 5 hours (average of something like 70MB/s)
- Hasn't failed yet... *knocks on wood*

Cons: - Spins down after something like 15 minutes of idle time (my other LaCie will sit and spin until you turn it off).
- Takes 15 seconds to spin back up and have Explorer unfreeze (the controller doesn't disconnect, so the drive looks normal until you try and access somewhere that isn't cached, then you have to wait for it to spin up).
- No power switch (back to my LaCie: I can control when that one is on or off).
- Can't disassemble without massive damage...

Other Thoughts: I bought an inline power switch (designed for under cabinet LED strips) to power it on and off (one of the few times I found somebody that makes exactly what obscure thing I needed).

I haven't rectified the spin-down behavior (and I doubt I can; I assume it's an internal controller thing...).

2 out of 5 eggsDon't trust it

Pros: Large and fairly quick for a 5400rpm drive

Cons: 3 months in and I get "Invalid MS-DOS function." when trying to copy files to it. I have two and they're both half full. I tried to make a large copy of hte data to another drive, and doing so can cause hte computer to hang and restart.

I took both out of the enclosures and connected them to the SAS bays in my HP ML350 G5 server along with 6 other drives. They are both having errors now. My raid controller doesn't pass through smart info unfortunately, so I have to pull it out to test it.

Other Thoughts: An extra couple bucks and you can get a considerably more reliable drive. It's worth it.
