With a robust fourth-generation mechanical design, Ultrastar A7K2000 is specifically built and tested for the Enterprise. Operating at 7200 RPM, it offers better overall performance than slower RPM capacity-oriented drives, and does so at impressively low power consumption rates. The Ultrastar A7K2000 also features HGST’s exclusive Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) sensor technology to deliver the highest quality and reliability in the industry.

  • newegg Industry-leading Reliability The Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000 hard drive offers industry leading reliability with 1.2 million hours MTBF rating. It also features HGST’s Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) sensor technology, which optimizes drive reliability in multi-drive RAID arrays and rack-mounted systems.
  • newegg Combining 7200 RPM performance and granular power control Operating at 7200 RPM, the HGST Ultrastar 7K2000 offers better overall performance than slower-RPM, capacity-oriented drives at impressively low power-consumption rates. When compared to the previous generation Ultrastar A7K1000, the A7K2000 offers up to a 155% improvement in sustained data transfer rate, and a 120% improvement in watts-per-GB. With five Advanced Power Management modes, a 36% reduction in watts during low-RPM idle mode, and using less than 1W during standby/sleep mode, the Ultrastar A7K2000 can help data centers achieve lower AC power and HVAC requirements, freeing up precious headroom for growing enterprise needs.
  • newegg Enhancing data safety and security To ensure the utmost in data safety and security, the Ultrastar A7K2000 is also available with a bulk data encryption (BDE) option. When enabled, the Hitachi BDE implementation encrypts all data on the drive using a private security key as it is written to the disk, and then decrypts it with the key as it is retrieved, giving users an extreme level of data protection. Unlike software-based encryption solutions, the Hitachi BDE implementation is hardware-based, so it doesn’t slow the system down. This technology also speeds up and simplifies the drive re-deployment and decommissioning process. By deleting the encryption key, the data is rendered unreadable, thereby eliminating the need for time-consuming, multi-pattern data overwrite.
  • newegg Innovation for a more sustainable environment The Ultrastar A7K2000 demonstrates Hitachi's ecological leadership with its halogen-free design and power-efficient operation. Both of these features serve to qualify the drive for the Hitachi EcoTrac classification, which identifies products that minimize environmental impact in the areas of product design, manufacturing, operation and disposal.

1 out of 5 eggsDead as a doornail

Pros: None.

Cons: Dead on arrival. Wouldn't spin up, nor would the motherboard/BIOS recognize it. I even tried using the same SATA connectors leading to my working DVD drive and the hard drive still wouldn't spin up. Complete waste of time and money!

Other Thoughts: Very disappointed. Although the item was refurbished, I expected it to at least be in working condition.

4 out of 5 eggsUsed Enterprise Disk

Pros: 1TB of Enterprise storage. It worked out the box without problems. Made sure to perform a full low level format before use and installed in my Rosewill R2-JBOD USB 2.0 enclosure.

This is installed along side a Seagate with sector issues and I needed another disk to move files around while I condition the drive. This one ironically had sector issues as well, but not near as bad.

The drive is rated for 1,200,000 hours before general failure. The drive I received had two bad sectors at 1,746 hours. It just needed to be reformatted which the manufacture did.

As noted above the drive has only used up less than 1% of it's life. If it holds out for 200,000 hours I would be happy.

Cons: Drive had reported two bad sectors 36 times, but each time it was the same two sectors.

It is noisy and makes a lot of vibrations.

Other Thoughts: I needed a disk but had limited funds which is why I bought the refurb. Sadly shortly after three different new 1TB drives went on sale for less than what this cost. Oh well, thats life :-)

2 out of 5 eggs2 OF 2 DOA!!!

Pros: Great customer service. Probably a good hard drive if it works.

Cons: High failure rate in my experience.

Other Thoughts: I bought one of these drives due to decent reviews; the first one came DOA. I RMA'd it, and had to pay shipping unfortunately. They quickly sent me another one; this one came with a huge hole in the box it shipped in, and a horrible packing job and of course it was DOA. I called up newegg and told them i did not want to have to pay the shipping again, and they gladly sent me a free shipping label and told me they would refund the money i had spent.... so thumbs down for the hdd, and a thumbs up for newegg's support.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: You have to format the drive in order to have it working .
Most drives come formatted already . Works like a charm .
I swear by Hitachi .

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I use to work in a disc drive company (Shugart) . The drives came back from the customer , the technician put new parts in them . I swear by the refurbished drives .

5 out of 5 eggsMultiple Drives. I swear by these

Pros: Reasonably quiet, built like a tank, reliable, very quick. older non-advanced format (this can be good), solid feel, lasts a long time, even at high temps. Decent cache size. Hits about 120-130MBs sequentially on mine

Cons: You can hear them grind when accessing, they run hot if you don't cool them properly. Non Advanced-format if it's what you are looking for, cache size could be a bit bigger but it doesn't matter to much. The drives are quick enough, heavy

Other Thoughts: I have a total of 10 of these. I swear by them. My hackintosh has 4 of these in RAID-5 with an LSI RAID card, my server uses 4 of these in RAID-5 with an LSI RAID card as well. My G5 has two of them in it. These drives have proven reliability to the extreme. None of have failed or shown signs since they first came out (2008 I think). They are wicked fast even compared to modern drives. The cache size could be double, but they are fast enough as it is. They run hot in desktops, I have to keep a high airflow fan on them. Even on a desktop it hits 48c in the Hackintosh. Do yourself a favor, I am a WD fan but I swear by these drives. They are heavy as they should be for Enterprise grade, and they are solid drives. Dirt cheap. I paid originally $400/pc back a long time ago for 4 of these. So about $1600 to build my server. I was not disappointed. They are worth their weight in gold. No I was not paid to write this, I actually endorse these as a video editor, computer repair person and a high end techie. You will love these drives. Not sure about the newer ones. Only worked with the 1TB

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good!

Pros: 1TB size, easy install, 49.99 price, it's supposed to be enterprise.

Cons: I knew it would be a "naked drive" so that's hardly a con, but you will need a sata cable, and you'll need to format this drive.

Other Thoughts: I got mine for 49.99, and I've only had it a few days. If it screws up I'll rewrite this, but I am doing a review now to say that it was not DOA, and after formatting it works great. The speeds are actually much higher than I was expecting. If it keeps working I got to give it 5 eggs, since it was 49.99! At 100 dollars it's probably a 4 star.
