5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Easy to install and format (once you get past the Windows UEFI restrictions on large HDDs). Have used Hitachi for years on my laptops. Trust them over others.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The fashion these days is to use an SDD for the OS. I did not go this way. I wanted fast and reliable, without the choking and throttling that happens with SSDs. My wife has a Surface tablet using an SSD OS drive, and it's a nightmare. Doing a simple file and folder backup took over two hours, with hardly anything but the OS installed. SSD throttled to 45 Kbits/S (that is KiloBITS, not KioBYTES). That was for a 20gB backup that should have taken about 10 minutes. I'm not going near SSDs until they've sorted out the throttling problem. With all the Windows updates coming in all the time, the SSDs are going to start experiencing catastrophic and sudden failures. Stick with HDDs until the SSD makers have figured things out better. (And that's not even considering the cost-per-GB issue.)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat buy

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity, low price and a brand that I've had great experiences with. I have two other Hitachi (now HGST) drives in my system, that have been running for years without fail. So far, this drive has met my expectations, and I've had no issues with it.

It serves primarily as my games drive (2.13 TB worth), and I've had no issues with loading any of them from this drive. Definitely recommended.

Cons: It's not 6TB? Just kidding, none so far.

Other Thoughts: Western Digital now owns Hitachi Storage (hence the HGST name brand change), and I have no issue with WD drives (though I do have several of theirs that have died, while my Hitachi's still tick on); but I'm trusting that the quality has remained the same as I'm used to.

5 out of 5 eggsStable and Decent Speed

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: -avg 150mb/s read/write speed
-Stable for over two months with no problems so far.
-Great price/gb when on sale.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The drives i ran on before getting this drive have a read/write speed of about 50MB/s, which in comparison, is pretty slow. THis makes me wonder if my boot drive is just a bit old. I might be in for a boot drive upgrade.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks for Me

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Large Capacity
3 Year Warranty
Quiet

Cons: None as yet....other than NewEgg only had 3 in stock and I needed 4

Other Thoughts: These will be the 11-13th HGST Drives I now own. So for no DOA drives none have failed (including the previous 8) and
they seem (to me) to run just a little quieter than the WD drives
they replaced.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Why am I required to enter something into the Pros field?

Cons: I ordered 2 of these in November of 2014 and both were DOA. Luckily, there is a 3-year warranty on them.

Other Thoughts: Return fees on DOA items really make my blood boil.

Pros: Hitachi based tech drive(lowest failure rates statistically)
3TB of space
Beautifully quiet, the difference in noise between it and a Western Digital drive is huge

Cons: Nothing

Other Thoughts: All three I ordered came without any DOAs and have been running in a ZFS pool for a month now just fine.

Pros: works

Cons: something happened during the shipping and the box was crushed, partially opened, and the air bags(?) exploded. luckily the hdst box within the delivery box seemed undamaged

Other Thoughts: did basic test on it, was within acceptable range
almost no bad sectors ( ~2)
keeping an eye on it in case of failure

5 out of 5 eggsTo Clarify Model vs. Kit Numbers

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of space (I have the 6TB model
Basically quiet
Great performance

Cons: Unknown compatibility with existing NAS systems, so you have to figure it out on your own.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to clarify a couple of misconceptions on the review by Edith A. She is confusing the drive # and the kit #. The drive number is indeed HDNxxxx; the kit number is H3IKxxxx. A little research on her part would have revealed this. You can find it here:

http://www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/0BF8B842F66D454288257C74007E842B/$file/DS_NAS_spec.pdf

This drive is under warranty from HGST, regardless of what Ms. A claims, as I have been through this process before. They track warranties by serial number, not receipt.
