5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a champ. Looking forward to years of great service

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: - If on sale, the price will be right
- Error-free performance thus far

Cons: None. No complaints here

Other Thoughts: I was a huge fan of Hitachi Global Deskstars and used them almost exclusively over the years. I was saddened to hear of their takeover and rebranding, but I bought this one drive to see if HGST still has it. At 7200 RPM, the NAS rating means it will be a bit more durable than a basic drive and also deal better with heat in stacked positions. I use this drive to mirror part of a Seagate drive because I distrust the Seagate. I have not complaints with my HGST and if you catch a good sale I'd recommend this hard drive without a blink.

2 out of 5 eggsFailing on arrival

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Decent price

Cons: As soon as I started it up I knew I was going to have to return it. I put the drive into a spare machine to stress test it before putting it into my NAS. The entire time the drive was being stress tested it was making noises that a healthy drive shouldn't make. I stopped the stress test when the stress testing program (preclear for unRAID) actually stalled, dd was reporting write speeds of 9MB/s which is an order of magnitude less than what it should be.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor longevity

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Worked great while it lasted.
Let me get my stuff off safely.

Cons: Not even two years into service it is starting to fail. It would stutter really bad. My game would lock up for 30 seconds at a time while it struggled to load data from the disk on the fly.

SMART errors and even HGST "drive fitness test" did not show any errors! A casual user might have kept using the hard drive until it failed completely and lost all of their data.

A hard drive stress test shows the read/write speed falling to 0 MB/s for several seconds at time. Average read speed dropped to about 13MB/s. The test says it's okay but I'm not trusting it.

Other Thoughts: HGST wants me to send them the hard drive carefully packaged so it doesn't get damaged in shipment. Reasonable I suppose but short of buying another HD I don't have the proper packaging.

3 out of 5 eggsUnknown problems

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: None yet !

Cons: Installed okay, transfer data okay, then kept rebooting by it self. Got a message that the drive is in the repair mode. After checking out the bios it said repair mode. I was unable to re-format. Couldn't do anything else. Drive is now laboring slowly. Returning!

Other Thoughts: Read such excellent views. Buyer beware.

2 out of 5 eggsVery surprised, disappointed

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Well reviewed drive, still comes back online after a while....

Cons: Will not remain a reliable member of SHR (synology hybrid raid) array

goes offline, array registers as degraded, hours to days later the drive shows back up within the storage manager as not initialized

Other Thoughts: I have an old Synology DS410j 4-bay NAS. Its old, slow and still awesome if you ask me - but demands have changed so DVR's in the house are based on Windows 7 Media Center boxes and local media is served from a WS2012r2/Plex box with the server backing up to the Synology. The WS2012r2 also supports a couple VM's and a heavily used SOHO environment.

The synology has had 4x samsung spinpoints (2TB) for ages. Last year one of the spinpoints finally STB. For some reason I strayed from the REDs I have been using for the last few years and picked up the HGST (WD) drive. I have noted that from day 1 the drive has always 9-10 degrees warmer than the spinpoints. I attributed this to the 7200 rpm v/s the 5400 rpm of the spinpoints, but at idle I am not so sure there should be such a big diff... anyway, whatever the cause, i am now going to pick up a RED and pull this HGST because i am afraid that the regular rebuilding that this drive causes will kill my old and trusty spinpoints.

Now the question is what to do with this HGST - do i trust it enough to try it elsewhere? Can I RMA a drive that still functions sometimes? This is the 'nicest' drive i have purchased - is there a lesson i should learn from this? FYI, I'm not jaded, I curious... I have 4 arrays, a hardware based 10 array, a Storage Spaces raid 10 analog, the synology SHR raid 6 analog and a jbod BIG config acting as the backup drive while i sort out the disks in my synology. Sometimes i feel silly having the amount of redundancy I have, then i find myself setting up the jbod BIG disk so i can duplicate/preserve the last copy i have of family pictures and business files....

Any thoughts?! ....on what to do with disk?? .....or how to obtain digital peace of mind?!

5 out of 5 eggsFast Quiet and Cool

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Fast, Quiet and Cool. Good for storing photos and videos. While this is not as fast as any SSD, the cost per GB is great. This is much faster than my WD Red NAS

Cons: Slower than SSDs but if you have a large photo collection this is a good option.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN (0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: More storage space than I will ever use, it works, a lot faster than my other 7200 rpm drive. (it was dying, though)

Cons: Louder than my other hard drives.

Other Thoughts: Most of the time I can't even hear the noises it makes due to my beastly CPU fan and the gun shots from my fps games.
