2 out of 5 eggsI wonder if this is a NAS drive thing...

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Well it's 4TB and feels like it being ~3lbs.
It's got reasonably fast sequential speeds.

Cons: Horrible sequential write speeds.

I connected it, rebooted, let Win7 recognize it and demand to restart, rebooted again, initialized the disk, assigned a simple volume, changed the drive letter of the drive it was replacing, changed it's drive letter to that drive, began copying all contents of the drive it was replacing to it, saw the transfer rate drop below 30MB/s and began to worry, stopped the transfer and opened CrystalDiskMark, setup a 2GB 5 pass run on all tests. As soon as I saw the sequential writes were ~15MB/s I knew I would not be able to use this drive as intended.

Other Thoughts: Beginning the RMA process.

For those curious what my possibly defective results were:
Sequential R/W MB/s: 175 / 15
512K Random R/W MB/s: 90 / 15
4K Random R/W MB/s: 0.8 / 1.4
4K32QD Random R/W MB/s: 1.6 / 1.5

5 out of 5 eggsRead/write not just a benchmark

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: - Fast, fast, fast, fast, fast
- Solid price-point

Cons: - Not free?
- Not made of dreams?
- Not made of starlight?

Other Thoughts: Okay, so I got a pair of these to put into a non-NAS dual enclosure. I had to read up a bit on GPT to mount them and format them appropriately, which took all of five minutes.

I began moving files over - I use these for long-term media storage. Movies, television, photography work I've done, whatever. I was filling a pair of 1TB drives already, the drives were older and I feared they could be on their last legs.

And files began moving over at a whopping 9MB/sec. Something must be wrong with my new hard drives, of course - those older drives have been reliable for four years. I ran benchmarking tests, showing practical read/write around 140MB/sec on the HGST drives. I tried another hard drive - same speed.

Finally, I tried copying from my 256GB SSD and the speed spiked to 130MB/sec on a 3GB file. It sustained 120MB/sec after a few seconds. I then tried copying from a 1.5TB, a WD Caviar Black - 98MB/sec.

I finally opened my old enclosure (that these two HGSTs are replacing) and realized that the old drives are old WD Green drives. The platters are nearly full, so any kind of copying or moving from them on newer data seems to take about 500% longer than something that's been on the drive for a few years.

These HGSTs have performed admirably under benchmarks, and can match it in a production environment. I may try out NAS later, but I'm just pleased that the read/write matches the benchmark so closely in a good situation

Pros: It made me feel good knowing that I had space for all of my things

5 out of 5 eggsLots of space, faster than most

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of space at a great price. 7200rpm compared to much lower in other brands. Very nice HD so far

Cons: Really can't think of a con yet, overall I am happy with it

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this hard drive if you are looking for lots of space at a great price without sacrificing speed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Fast, relatively cool, 4TB!

Cons: None (so far).

Other Thoughts: I bought 6 of these at once for my NAS. 4 came in a prepackaged box, then that box plus another 2 came in a newegg box. Did a preclear (read all bytes, write all 0's, read all bytes) on all drives. No bad or reallocated sectors, which is a great thing.

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Reasonable price
Fast
Large capacity

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I installed four of these in RAID 6 in a QNAP NAS unit, Model TS-451. They have been working great for about 3 months so far and sound very quiet.

3 out of 5 eggsNOT A HAPPY GUY

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: All items ordered arrived in a respectable short time. The price is why I purchased the 4 TB drive.

Cons: DOA.... if this was the only thing I would be giving it an additional star, but unfortunately it isn't. I see no reason why the consumer should ever have to pay for return shipping on faulty products. We did make it faulty..... If you want to curb the cost/junk produced turn the shipping cost back to the manufacturer. This might ensure they actually use QC as a part of the process.

Other Thoughts: Very disappointed that I am out more oney after buying almost a complete system yet again. I am a return costumer that is seriously weighing the possibility of going elsewhere for my tech needs.

5 out of 5 eggspurchased #11, still no trouble at all

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Fast for a SATA, not too warm, and quiet.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I reviewed this drive here on 10/15/14, reporting on the ten that I purchased for a NAS I had built. I just purchased a new one to replace a 4.5 year old WD Green 2TB drive in my workstation that was showing signs of failure. The drives in the NAS continue to perform 24/7 with no issues at all. Array is scrubbed for errors on a weekly basis; to this point zero errors. The new drive went into my workstation without incident and was loaded from a backup on the NAS without incident. The new drive runs at the same temps as the drives in the NAS (about 12-13C above ambient) and hdparm -tT shows timed buffered disk reads at about 160 MB/sec which is quite respectable although large sequential reads are not the most common usage in day to day service. The 7200 RPM speed will keep the latency down; I have not tested random read/write speeds because the way I use the drive those are not important to me. To this point, with 11 drives in place, I have had no infant mortality, no errors, and in fact no discrepancies at all.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in 3 months

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Reasonable price, 7200 rpm.

Cons: Unreliable. Early disk failure.

Other Thoughts: Ran in an external enclosure. Did great at first, copied files from 2 other disks onto it. Used very little after that. Now, at less than 3 months, it no longer works.

5 out of 5 eggsHurray for HGST

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Big, fast, and no issues whatsoever with any of
the 4 units I have. Because these are in a retail
box, they're also guaranteed to be better packaged
for shipment.

Cons: Almost never on sale.
(Which tells you something when you see continuous sales
for other brands)

Other Thoughts: Over the years I've tried to spread my large collection of drives amongst
the big three to reduce risk , but darn it if Hitachi/HGST drives don't
screw up that plan by being the only brand that never fails.

YMMV of course.
