3 out of 5 eggs14098

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Big!!!

Cons: I have been a longtime supporter of HGST drive'z.
3-1/2TB [~3.63TB] iz a LOT LESS THAN 4TB!!! :(

When will the HGST He10 10TB drive'z be available; I know they are already in production?
...can we expect our System'z to 'see' them az 5TB! (lol)
14098. Yachid.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy it

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Big!

Cons: 1) Noisy, reminds me of what drivers used to sound like a decade ago!

2) Horrible firmware/software support. EVERY company has an easy-to-use piece of software to set things up, copy partitions, etc. not this one! Big fail there.

3) Upon testing the drive in benchmarks the performance was incredibly lack-luster to say the least!

4) If I would have known the company is somehow related to Hitachi I never would have bought them.

Other Thoughts: This drives is a major piece of garbage. After benchmarking it, testing it for errors and stability, I can definitely say that this brand is UNRELIABLE. I found many errors during read/write tests, etc. I would avoid this whole brand like the plaque.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Happy

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Reviews have it as a solid drive and they, bought two, work fine individually in the PC.

Cons: They would not work in a Lenova IX-2 nor would they mirror under Win 8.1 Disk Manager on a PC.

Other Thoughts: Worst insult was trying to return them as not suitable and seeing Newegg wanted a 18% restocking fee. I'd rather buy a Synology NAS than pay that kind of restocking fee. Given all the business I've given this firm I find this a slap in the face.

5 out of 5 eggsReplace all my dying SG's...

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Great NAS hdd. They are fairly fast and run pretty cool even with the 7200 rpm spindle speed. Good amount of Cache memory as well. HIGH MTBF, these drive will last a while people! Make sure that you get a hdd with a good warranty and high MTBF!

Cons: Honestly, none that I can think of. The price is good here on the Egg!

Other Thoughts: I didn't order these from the Egg.... My boss did from a different place that our company has an account with, otherwise we would have got them from Newegg. The price was only a dollar different. These drives have been replacing LOTS of failing 3TB Seagates. We were unlucky to get the 3TB drives that have been failing for almost everyone out there. This is a solid replacement however and we'll be using them long term. I'm sure that if anyone out there is thinking about a decent drive, this one is worth a hard look. Good performance, price and most importantly warranty, aka, they BELIEVE in this drive... Good luck on your quest to keep your junk safe!

Pros: None

Cons: I have had three Hitachi drives they all died prematurely. There is a reason they changed there name to HGST.

1 out of 5 eggsNot quite DOA... just no darn good after 30+ days.

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of Space (in theory)

Cons: Drive failed soon after 30 days. Loaded bunches of photos and videos and it started going off line and failing with I/O errors... Other times, just accessing the drive would hang the system and had to do full power off to shut the system down, which Windows does not like.

It took many, many, attempts (many DAYS) to get my data off there onto other storage as it would keep hanging up as my RMA deadline was approaching.

Just sent it back to HGST for replacement. Shipping cost: $19!!! Some bargain! I spent extra to get a more reliable drive and this is what happened. :( :( :(

Other Thoughts: Newegg: Don't tout reliability for this disk. I have bought lots of cheapie drives in the past and only one failed, a DeskStar which I think might have morphed into HGST.

3 out of 5 eggs33.33% chance of FAILURE ?

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Great value per TB
and therefore: reasonably priced

Cons: Purchased 3, one "died" in the first three months of use.

Other Thoughts: 3 YEAR WARRANTY, GREAT! BUT YOU PAY SHIPPING CHARGES TO RETURN AND THEY SEND YOU A RECONDITIONED UNIT TO REPLACE. NOT SO GOOD. GOES TO THE NECESSITY OF USING SOME FORM OF NAS AND SOME FORM OF RAID TO PROTECT YOUR STORED DATA. WE CURRENTLY HAVE 5TB+/- OF DATA. HAD WE NOT HAD "OVERKILL" FOR BACKUP, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid work horses

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: I have three of them in a NAS. Worked right from day one, haven't seen any issue in their SMART data or any data integrity errros.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: These are not quiet drives, which is to be expected of a 7200RPM drive made for NAS. Both the platter rotation and the head seeks are clearly audible and you don't want to be in the same room for long periods.

They are nowhere near 10,000RPM server screamers but again, don't put these into your desktop machine.

The drives do not get very warm for being 7200RPM. I have one 80mm fan blowing over 2 of the drives, fairly low RPM, and it cools them very well. So a typical NAS case, or a desktop case with a good push/pull fan configuration will do just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for small RAID array

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: - Fast
- Cheap
- Play nice with either direct SATA connection and Raid card (Perc H700)

Cons: - It doesn't do the dishes

Other Thoughts: I've orderd four of these drives to build a Veeam backup server on a budget.

All four are configured in RAID 5 to a Dell H700 raid controller. The speed is great, the disks are always recognized by the raid controller.

The raid 5 array of 4 drives can sustain a throughput of 450MB/sec for hours when I'm archiving 3.5TB of backup files.
