5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works! I got the 4 TB model. Powered up and partitioned like a charm. Copied over the contents of an older 1 TB WD Green drive with no problem. Watched some video and it cached just fine.

Cons: Pretty heavy for a 3.5" drive. I wouldn't really expect bulk storage like this to be lightweight though.

Other Thoughts: Advertised in base-10 TB, not proper computational base-2 TiB, so 4 "TB" works out to something like 3.64 TiB. No eggs docked since all the HDD manufactures do this, but it's still stupid because half of them make RAM and that's not sold with the same shady math. Yeah I'm still bitter all these years later.

1 out of 5 eggsDo NOT Buy!!

Pros: None.

Cons: Over heats within 1 hour.

Other Thoughts: I bought this almost a year ago but it has been sitting on the shelf awaiting for me to get around to sorting all the file in my various drives.
It over heats almost immediately.

2 out of 5 eggsNot all it's cracked up to be

Pros: Performance, alleged reputation for reliability sold me on this drive.

Cons: Drive failed after 9 months of use. Not impressed considering the "specs" and the premium paid for this drive.

Other Thoughts: I have bought 4 of these drives to make two raid-1 Linux mdadm devices in a large capacity desktop system. The one pair that is currently installed suffered the loss of one drive hanging the system. The good news is that two of the drives were just recently purchased and I finished certifying them, so I can just plug a "new one" in and re-establish the mirroring while the other is sent back under warranty. Unfortunately, the question is did I make a mistake by purchasing these drives? I've never had a drive like this fail so quickly. In fact, I've used another manufacturers "cheap" drives and they've been running fine for years. I was contemplating another purchase of a 4 or 6 TB pair of these drives, but at this point, I think I'll avoid them and look elsewhere for a more reliable drive until I see how these pan out and how HGST (WD) handles the RMA. At this point, I'm not impressed with these drives. Here are some of the "smart" statistics so you can see the failures for yourself:

5 out of 5 eggsNot just for NAS Boxes

Pros: A hard drive is a hard drive. I picked up one of these as a storage drive for my Mini ITX computer. Knowing the environment my computer is going to be in (big rig truck), I know I'll need these additional anti shock and durability features. This is a fairly quiet drive, even under full access and defrag I cannot hear it, and my case fans are no louder than 11dB.

Cons: None thus far, any con is a formatting/windows issue.

Cons: I have been a longtime supporter of HGST drive'z.
3-1/2TB [~3.63TB] iz a LOT LESS THAN 4TB!!! :(

When will the HGST He10 10TB drive'z be available; I know they are already in production?
...can we expect our System'z to 'see' them az 5TB! (lol)

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy it

Pros: Big!

Cons: 1) Noisy, reminds me of what drivers used to sound like a decade ago!

2) Horrible firmware/software support. EVERY company has an easy-to-use piece of software to set things up, copy partitions, etc. not this one! Big fail there.

3) Upon testing the drive in benchmarks the performance was incredibly lack-luster to say the least!

4) If I would have known the company is somehow related to Hitachi I never would have bought them.

Other Thoughts: This drives is a major piece of garbage. After benchmarking it, testing it for errors and stability, I can definitely say that this brand is UNRELIABLE. I found many errors during read/write tests, etc. I would avoid this whole brand like the plaque.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Happy

Pros: Reviews have it as a solid drive and they, bought two, work fine individually in the PC.

Cons: They would not work in a Lenova IX-2 nor would they mirror under Win 8.1 Disk Manager on a PC.

Other Thoughts: Worst insult was trying to return them as not suitable and seeing Newegg wanted a 18% restocking fee. I'd rather buy a Synology NAS than pay that kind of restocking fee. Given all the business I've given this firm I find this a slap in the face.

5 out of 5 eggsReplace all my dying SG's...

Pros: Great NAS hdd. They are fairly fast and run pretty cool even with the 7200 rpm spindle speed. Good amount of Cache memory as well. HIGH MTBF, these drive will last a while people! Make sure that you get a hdd with a good warranty and high MTBF!

Cons: Honestly, none that I can think of. The price is good here on the Egg!

Other Thoughts: I didn't order these from the Egg.... My boss did from a different place that our company has an account with, otherwise we would have got them from Newegg. The price was only a dollar different. These drives have been replacing LOTS of failing 3TB Seagates. We were unlucky to get the 3TB drives that have been failing for almost everyone out there. This is a solid replacement however and we'll be using them long term. I'm sure that if anyone out there is thinking about a decent drive, this one is worth a hard look. Good performance, price and most importantly warranty, aka, they BELIEVE in this drive... Good luck on your quest to keep your junk safe!
