5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid High Performance Drives

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: 3 Year Warranty.
Great price - no, not the cheapest you can get, but there's a lot of cheap garbage on the market with just a 1 year warranty. Best to stay away from any drive or manufacturer that can't offer a 3 year warranty.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought 12 of these drives over a year ago and set them up as a RAID 6 array (RAID 6 means any 2 drives can fail without losing any data) on a high end Areca controller card. The drives were getting full, so I bought 12 of the new HGST 6TB NAS drives when they went on sale, and those drives are also proving to be rock solid.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drives

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: I bought these as server drives, not as NAS drives. So far they are working very well and I'm happy with their performance.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive, 7200rpm drive speed better than others

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Easy to setup in QNAP. Haven't had any issues since I have loaded them. Get much faster transfer speeds than I did with the Seagate Central I had that crashed.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I would recommend these drives. I havent had any issues with them.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat value, but reliability a concern

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: One of the best values for a 4TB, 7200 RPM drive (most in this price range are 5000 RPM).
Once installed the drives are working well, quiet and vibration levels as expected

Cons: I ordered 4 for a RAID, and 2 of them were DOA. Newegg was great about exchanging them, but it makes me wonder about reliability

Other Thoughts: My rating would be 5 eggs if all 4 drives had worked out of the box, but a 50% DOA failure rate is very high (and surprising).
Initial speed testing with these drives in my RAID10 indicates good performance, not quite as good as the smaller drives they replaced, but still with numbers that are good.
Overall, aside from the DOA units, I'm happy with these drives so far. I'll see what the long term reliability winds up being given the DOA rate I encountered

5 out of 5 eggsEverything else is slow.

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Rock solid. Fast (7200RPM). Great warranty.

Cons: Not flashy. Not a pretty "color".

Other Thoughts: Synology NAS just ate it up. The other branded drives I had caused all kinds of troubles, slowdowns, even lost an array once just by putting one into the running backplane. Even Windows 10 didn't really like the "other" drives in a new "Storage Spaces" configuration. But the HGST's just keep on trucking. I think I can say I have a LOT of them. And soon I'll ONLY have them. Anyone want any seagates?

2 out of 5 eggsDead On Arrival

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Large Capacity

Cons: 2 out of the 3 drives I ordered on Black Friday (for Christmas, for my son) were Dead on Arrival.

Other Thoughts: He already has 3 of these drives running in his NAS for over a year so this must've been a fluke, still sucks though.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product for the right purpose!

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: 3726GB Total Storage
7200 RPM performance
1 million hours MTBF

Cons: Not for Windows-Based Personal Computers, Slowing down Windows Explorer! When I put this into my system, everything to do with windows explorer slowed down. I am able to notice the difference because of my hardware and my primary OS drive. When using this drive in my system, It adds 0.5-2.0 seconds of waiting sometimes versus having to not wait at all! Needless to say I will be swapping this NAS for a regular 4TB in the future and using the NAS in a Server where such a thing would not matter.

Other Thoughts: My Hardware Specs:
Intel Core i7-5930K 3.9 GHz
MSI X99A SLI KRAIT EDITION
G.SKILL Ripjaws 32GB DDR4 3200
SAPPHIRE R9 390X 8GB 1110 MHz

5 out of 5 eggsLove the HGS HDs. They are the best!!!!

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: These drives just work and keep working over time.
I have an array of HGS 2TB HDs that's been running for at least 3 or 4 years now.
Waited until they went on sale and couldn't be happier with the price.

Cons: you get what you pay for and these drives aren't cheap.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend HGS Desktop SAN HDs for any home enthusiast who needs the space and reliable performance.

2 out of 5 eggsWas great while it lasted

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN (0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Huge hard drive, plenty of storage. Easy install and set up. "Quick" transfer of a huge amount of files.

Cons: All was great until 11 months later when I got a SMART notification that drive is malfunctioning and failure is imminent. Cool, just what I need.

Other Thoughts: Bought this as it was highly recommended, but as with all HDD; it's not if it's going to fail, it's when it's going to fail. I expected it to last at least a year or two.
