5 out of 5 eggsHGST 4TB

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN(0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity
Fast Drive
Easy Initialization
Loving it!

Cons: Read the other thoughts, it isn't necessarily a con.

Other Thoughts: As always, the manufacturer doesn't give you the FULL 4TB. I run Windows 8.1 Pro UEFI and do not need additional software. However, the OEM always takes a small amount of space for something. This time, after formatting the drive to NTFS, I got 3.63 TB (according to Windows). I kind of expected it. It is a great drive, I would recommend.

5 out of 5 eggsSingle drive

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN(0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: + Size
+ Purchased at great price
+ RAID stats

Cons: - Regular Price

Other Thoughts: This drive came in and installed in a snap. Working great as of the first minute. I've tested it with several copies, downloads, and installations...so far so good running as a single lone drive.

I made the plunge on this NAS version with the expectation of purchasing more in the future to RAID together. I have used many drives from seagate to toshiba to WD and this one has proven to be up to the task performance-wise.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat and reliable

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN(0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Works just great, fast, quiet, and cool. Have 6 of these in a Fractal Design case running FreeNAS with no problems as all. Temps actually report 2-3 degrees cooler on average than when I had 6 WD Black drives in it

Cons: Nothing at all

Other Thoughts: Lets hope for a long life, like my older Samsung drives gave me :)

5 out of 5 eggsSeems to work...

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN(0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Price point vs, some of the other names out there. Everyone else seems to love this drive, and the ratings give me confidence. As long as it holds up, I'll be happy. For mass storage, I don't need a great deal of performance out side of durability. But I have no complaints about it's read/write and access times.

Cons: Well... the software needed to make it work with a Windows system has at least one problem. Unfortunately, I never got the software to install. On two different computers, it would just hang up after two Win7 security popups. It appears the software attempts to look for the drive when you first install it before allowing you to continue. And I'm guessing something was stopping it from looking at my HD's. After 5 tries, I gave up and used a different method.

Other Thoughts: To get around the failed software, I used a RAID controller card to initialize the drive and set the partition. Once this was done, I removed the card and plugged the drive into the MB. Windows picked it up and showed the full capacity. Now it works great. I may another down the road.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value, great performance

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN(0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet in my SAN

Very low vibration in my 8 bay SAN enclosure

Designed for a NAS (same environment as a SAN), p[erfect for my needs

Relatively low heat compared to my previous consumer hard drives that were in my SAN

Out of 8 drives none were DoA

Out of 8 drives 0 had bad sectors after running a 4 pattern badblocks test on each drive

Performance is more than adequate for personal media drives, even with RAID-Z2 (ZFS FTW; 20.2 TB's of usable space out of 32 TB's with RAID-Z2, but has 2 drive failure tolerance and can't complain about silent repairs from ZFS' robust checksum system, plus snapshots and compression are a plus and makes up for the overhead, not many linux filesystems support filesystem-level compression, you won't regret going with ZFS)

Get 8 of these puppies and you'll have 28 TB's of usable storage, with redundancy about 24 TB's with RAID 6

Great reviews for HGST in general compared to other manufacturers, though they're owned by WD now so not sure if that'll effect anything

Cons: Cost I guess, but you get what you pay for! I bought all 8 of mine with a nice Newegg 10% discount, so that brought the price down to other cheaper 4 TB drives

I had two Hitachi drives in the past that both developed bad sectors and started having major read errors after a few years (But they may have always had bad sectors, back then I didn't know any better and didn't test drives before using them), but those drives were manufactured almost 10 years ago, figured I'd be willing to roll the dice again

Other Thoughts: I've only owned these drives for 2 weeks so I can't comment on longevity, but no DoA's and no bad sectors on 8 drives is pretty impressive

5 out of 5 eggsNo errors out of the box

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN(0S03664) 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: I haven't really put it to use yet but will combine a 2TB & 1TB drive on to it this weekend (movies, music, Steam collection). It arrived boxed and well protected inside the box. I immediately hooked it up to an external adapter and after a fresh format in GPT ran a full diagnostic on it (which took most of a day) and it returned zero errors of any kind. This is the first fresh drive in years I can remember that didn't show a few blips out of the box. The drives it's replacing are both Hitachi, less than a year old, and neither had more than a few initially either. I'm just adding some space, they are working fine.

Cons: Not much of a con so far but I did notice after the run was finished that it seemed pretty warm to the touch, after being run open-air on an Icy Dock adapter for about 11 hours during the testing. My full tower Thor case is full of fans so I doubt it will be an issue but for a small crowded case it might be. I didn't think to run Speccy on it before I put it away to see actual temp. BTW, I recommend the Icy Dock adapter as well (MB981U3N-1SA). Newegg has it.

Other Thoughts: This is the 4th Hitachi-related drive I bought in the last several years and I've had no trouble from any of them. I can't say the same for a couple other brands out there. I haven't had any outright failures with any of those but they always have had problems with numerous bad sectors and a couple are showing concerns in Hard Disk Sentinel... Perhaps it's bad luck... those are all in my work computers though so they do get more daily use. I see only a couple between all the Hitachi units. So far I'm pleased and a little surprised with this drive. I will update after 6 months or so if any problems turn up. Based on the initial checkout I would recommend this drive.
